After nearly six years as a focal point of 101 ESPN’s weekday lineup in St. Louis, midday host Kevin Wheeler is no longer with the station. Wheeler took to Facebook on Monday to let his fans know, last Thursday was his final day with 101 ESPN in St. Louis.
According to Wheeler, he’s not leaving the station on his own terms. “Ratings were good, advertisers were happy and I’m probably as low-maintenance as a radio guy can be so…yeah,” the veteran radio host wrote on Facebook.
Wheeler’s show aired from 10am – 1pm on the Hubbard Broadcasting owned St. Louis sports station. According to sources, 101 ESPN is expected to go with just one midday show from 10am – 2pm, rather than splitting those hours between two shows as they previously did. Anthony Salter, host of The Turn from 1 – 3pm is expected to be part of the new program.
The new midday show will sit between The Bernie Miklasz Show in the morning and The Fast Lane in afternoon drive. With the new changes, The Fast Lane will continue as a four-hour show, broadcasting from 2 – 6pm instead of 3 – 7pm. Freeing up the six o’clock hour will allow the station to offer more St. Louis Blues programming as they begin their new broadcast partnership with the Stanley Cup Champions.
Wheeler joined 101 ESPN in 2013, following an eight-year run with KMOX NewsRadio 1120 in St. Louis and a decade-long tenure with the nationally syndicated Sporting News Radio, now SB Nation Radio. The popular sports radio host of nearly a quarter-century and now former member of 101 ESPN doesn’t know what’s next for his career, but didn’t express much concern.
“We’ll figure out something cool for the next step,” Wheeler wrote on Facebook. “Not worried about that, just a matter of time.”
A 1994 graduate of the University of Miami, Wheeler played baseball for the Hurricanes and continues to be involved with the sport as a coach with the St. Louis Gamers youth program and a talent evaluator with USA Baseball.
