Tony Romo is going to be the highest paid sportscaster in history with his next contract. Who will be paying him is still a mystery though. According to a report from Outkick the Coverage, ESPN wants to bring the former Cowboys QB to Bristol to be part of Monday Night Football.
ESPN and CBS entering into a bidding war will likely work out nicely for Romo. Clay Travis writes that he is in line to receive a contract worth between $15 million and $20 million per year.
Disney isn’t just interested in keeping Monday Night Football on ESPN. The company would also like to get ABC back into the Super Bowl rotation. It has been previously reported that Disney may also be interested in bidding for a Sunday NFL package for ABC. Signing Tony Romo, currently the highest profile NFL analyst on TV, would certainly send the message to the League that ESPN and Disney value its product and will do whatever is necessary to grow their relationship.
Travis points out that CBS is just as desperate to keep Romo for similar reasons. Not only is he the centerpiece of the network’s NFL coverage, there also isn’t an heir apparent should Romo move on. With CBS set to broadcast Super Bowl LV, this wouldn’t be an ideal year to break in a new lead analyst.
No timetable was revealed for a decision by Romo. CBS has the right to match any offer the former QB receives from Disney or any other company.
