With no live sports to cover, it is more than just athletes out of work. Several media members are without a paycheck. Even worse, some are without the type of full-time job that might offer them some kind of protection. Those are the people AP writer Larry Lage was thinking about a few weeks ago when he began a charity campaign.
Lage is raising money for freelancers out of work. He started a Facebook donation page with the hope of $2000 to help freelancers in his hometown of Detroit. To date, he has raised more than $20,000 and is sending money out in increments of $50 and $100 to writers, camera operators, and broadcasters who don’t even have jobs to chase right now.
The pot has grown and the word has spread with the help of national media members. ESPN’s Desmond Howard and Adrian Wojnarowski have both Tweeted out the link. Jemele Hill has as well.
“It’s like a virus, in a good way,” Lage told Nate Atkins of the Lansing State Journal.
