The Kentucky Derby is this weekend, and NBC is gearing up for the single biggest event in horse racing.
One of the segments that will be airing ahead of the race will center around a crossover between New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick and Hall of Fame trainer and six-time Kentucky Derby winner Bob Baffert, the network announced in a press release.
Baffert and Belichick spoke with host Mike Tirico as the football coach is a horse-racing fan and has attended multiple Triple Crown races, including the Kentucky Derby. NBC decided to take Belichick out of his element in football but dropping him in another of his passions.
The two legends in their sport discuss various topics, including the similarities between them, the shared respect, and the difficulties of winning consistently at the highest level. It sounds very similar to the documentary about Belichick and Nick Saban HBO aired in 2019.
“Racing is a tough profession. You get one shot at it. There’s no halftime; there’s no timeouts to make adjustments. Once they come out of the gate, that’s it. You have two minutes to win, and that’s an incredible skill,” Bill Belichick said.
“We have had a couple weeks that haven’t gone so good, but you just snap out of it and bounce back. You just turn the page and go ‘on to Cincinnati.'”
Baffert has a horse in the race this Kentucky Derby with Media Spirit (15-1) and is hoping to win his seventh career Derby victory, breaking a tie with Ben Jones for the most ever by a trainer.
“I’m like Bill. I love the competition. I love every year, ‘Who’s going to be the next star?’ Are we going to have another American Pharaoh? Another Justified? I just concentrate on what I have to do and just block out the noise,” Baffert said.
