News Outlets Suspending Their Reporting From Russia

As the conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues, major news outlets, not only in the United States but worldwide, have decided they’re suspending their reporting from Russia, per Adweek.

The decision comes after the Russian parliament enacted legislation Friday noting journalists and individuals in the country may be incarcerated for up to 15 years if they report “fake” information about what’s occurring in Ukraine.

“The change to the criminal code, which seems designed to turn any independent reporter into a criminal purely by association, makes it impossible to continue any semblance of normal journalism inside the country,” Bloomberg editor-in-chief John Micklethwait said on the matter.

BBC was one of the first major global news outlets to cease its Russia-based news operations; other outlets like CNN followed.

“Because of the new censorship law passed in Russia today, some Western networks including ABC News are not broadcasting from the country tonight. We will continue to assess the situation and determine what this means for the safety of our teams on the ground,” an ABC News spokesperson stated to TV Newser

Furthermore, CBS News is hit the pause button on their broadcast from Russia, with a spokesperson saying, “CBS News is not currently broadcasting from Russia as we monitor the circumstances for our team on the ground given the new media laws passed today.”
