When the song Glory Days played to open the three o’clock hour on WFAN, it was indicating a blast from the fast of the radio behemoth was coming. Today is the 35th anniversary of WFAN going on the air.
However, the station was not officially 35-years old until the 3pm ET hour hit and with it came a recognition of the historical hour and who was in the chair for so many years during it.
Chris McMongile was filling-in for the normal shift of Carton and Roberts. He opened by noting the history of the day and the significance of the hour and then gave the WFAN audience a message from one of it’s giants.
Mike Francesa had recorded a congratulatory message for the station:
“Hello again everyone, this is Mike Francesa. First and foremost, let me thank you the listeners for making the FAN the iconic station that is has become over the past thirty-five years. There is no place like New York City and you are the best fans in the world.
Congratulations to anyone that has called the FAN home for any part of the past thirty-five years. We should all be very proud of what we built. Thirty-five years and going strong. Happy anniversary. And on this 4th of July weekend, may we find some common ground and some patriotism in our very troubled country. Thank you and again and congratulations.”
Chris McMonigle wrapped the message with a salute to the New York sports radio icon.
“There we have it, the great Mike Francesa who held down this time slot, the afternoon drive, for nearly thirty years. Revolutionized the two-man team with him and Dog. Was just a pioneer and someone who was invaluable to this station and the industry, really”.
