ESPN Soccer Analyst Taylor Twellman will not be travelling to Qatar for the 2022 World Cup next month, and says Disney made the correct decision by letting him cover the event from the United States.
“I am not going. Disney made the right decision,” Twellman told 98.5 The Sports Hub’s Felger & Mazz. “As a non-rights holder, we can not be in the stadium. So Disney security was like ‘No, you’re good. You’re gonna stay in New York, Connecticut, and D.C. and do your hits’. Imagine me over there, Felger. I’d stick out like a sore thumb.”
Twellman said the entire World Cup being played in Qatar, which former FIFA President Sepp Blatter now says is a “mistake”, is a farce and he’s fearful of potential problems in the country.
“When you put $100 million in a brown envelope and want to play on the surface of the sun, and play in stadiums that are built out of shipping containers, this is what you get. In all seriousness, I hope nothing bad happens. This tournament shouldn’t be played in this place at this time,” concluded Twellman.
The 2022 World Cup is scheduled to begin on Sunday, November 20th.
