Mets to Pay Tribute to Original Radio Broadcaster Bob Murphy

The first radio broadcaster in the history of the New York Mets will finally get his much-deserved honor and recognition by the team this weekend.

Bob Murphy was hired to be the voice of the Mets ahead of their inaugural season in 1962. He stayed in the role until he retired in 2003. Murphy died in 2004.

Howie Rose, the current voice of the Mets, announced Monday that Murphy’s family will be on hand at Citi Field on Thursday as an honorary marker in Murphy’s name will be revealed next to his longtime broadcast partner Ralph Kiner.

Murphy was named the Ford C. Frick Award winner by the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1994. The broadcast booth at Citi Field is named in Murphy’s honor.
