On MSNBC’s The ReidOut, former CNN chief media correspondent Brian Stelter asserted that Fox News host Jesse Watters has become the network’s new figure representing extreme views in primetime.
Anchor Joy Reid inquired whether this trend is driven by audience demand or if there is a deliberate effort to cultivate a divisive and controversial perspective on American culture.
Stelter responded, noting that during the Roger Ailes era, the influence was top-down, but presently, it’s a bottom-up phenomenon shaped by audience preferences.
He expressed concern about the audience’s significant role, describing it as a potentially alarming prospect despite his appreciation for current viewers. Stelter pointed out that Jesse Watters now occupies the role of Fox’s primetime extremist.
He emphasized that Fox News believes it is respecting its audience by delivering what they desire, a sentiment echoed in emails from 2020. Stelter argued, however, that this approach is counterproductive and disrespectful, ultimately negatively impacting the Republican Party.
Stelter cited the recent off-year elections as an example, suggesting that Fox’s influence might be detrimental to the GOP, despite the network’s intention to assist the party. He found this dynamic noteworthy as the nation approaches the 2024 elections.
