Alex Gold of 610 Sports Kansas City Describes The Scene at Chiefs Parade Shootings

Alex Gold, co-host of Cody & Gold on 610 Sports Kansas City was a guest of the Mully & Haugh Show on 670 The Score in Chicago this morning. Gold had been on site covering the Kansas City Chiefs parade on Wednesday when several people were shot.

“We are doing alright,” Gold said when welcomed to the show. “Fortunately when it comes to our staff and everything we had planned on the parade route, everybody that we had ties to was able to make it out alright. Obviously everyone is just angry and shocked, that’s a big part of the reaction from a lot of people in Kansas City with what transpired yesterday.”

The hosts asked Gold to describe where he was as everything unfolded. “It was a perfect day prior to the incident,” he said. “It was 65 degrees, one of the best days of the year, something people look forward to, these parades. School was cancelled around the area so you had families and all sorts of kids out there…We were further up the parade route than where Union Station is, which is where the shooting took place. We were on the parade route, joking around, kids were throwing footballs up four stories to condos, everyone is cheering on the people trying to catch it. It was just a great time, it really was a perfect day in KC, a celebration.”

Gold described what it was like seeing 10 to 15 police cars go by and immediately thinking something was wrong. “You could sense something was going on and word quickly traveled, unfortunately, that there was an active shooter situation.”

Gold also talked about some of the very positive stories that have come out of such an awful situation. Law enforcement has been widely celebrated for their response to the situation as have members of the Kansas City Chiefs.

“There’s a lot of reports that Chiefs players were comforting children inside of Union Station that were, understandably, so terrified and traumatized with something they might have to deal with, perhaps, for the rest of their lives. And seeing that Andy Reid was comforting a teenage kid who gave this extremely emotional interview on local television because he couldn’t find his friend. In this terrible, terrible situation there’s been a lot of comforting stories that speaks to how great the people are in Kansas City.”

Gold was then asked about his personal feelings as a longtime Kansas City resident. “I grew up here…everybody is so prideful about this city,” he began. “Specifically right now, and a lot of it is on the sports end. This city is kind of on a heater right now, there’s a lot of pride.

“Brand new airport, the draft was here, the Chiefs momentum. They’re going to build a brand new downtown ballpark, the first women’s professional soccer [stadium] is being built, the World Cup is going to have six matches here in Kansas City. There’s a feeling of a ton of momentum and movement. To have an event like this happen and bring a terrible spotlight on the city, I think it’s heartbreaking.”
