Dawn Davenport serves in a variety of roles at 104.5 The Zone in Nashville and on ESPN. And she says she doesn’t ever feel like she’s out of place working in the industry.
While appearing on the Nashville Game Changers podcast, Davenport was asked about the prevalence of women in sports and sports media. She said she’s seen the reaction grow leaps and bounds during her time in the space.
“I almost feel nowadays it’s not, ‘Oh, look, there’s a female.’ It’s just almost normal,” she said. “In the places I’m at, the reactions from others are ‘Oh, yeah. Ok.’ It’s not a big deal, because it’s happening more often. And I think that’s a great thing.”
She added that she hopes that some day a woman earning a spot isn’t viewed as groundbreaking or isn’t major news.
“I would love to get to the point where we don’t have to be like, ‘Oh, look, it’s an all-female front row,’ because it is normal. But I do feel like in the last decade that I’ve seen those steps happen to where it’s not a first anymore. This isn’t a first for a woman to call this or call that. Won’t you love when we get to the point where it’s not a big deal completely across all sports? Where it is just normal. But I do feel like that. I’ve seen that a little bit.”
Currently, Dawn Davenport is the co-host of 3HL, the afternoon show on 104.5 The Zone in Nashville. Additionally she works as a sideline reporter for ESPN and the SEC Network in a variety of capacities.
