Greg Hill: Aaron Rodgers’ Announcement A “Douche Move”

"You did it so that you could tell everybody you’re retiring and have a farewell tour. That’s why you did it. You’re an egomaniac, a narcissist"

Date:

During his Tuesday afternoon appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers voiced that he is “pretty sure this is it,” hence why he only signed a one-year deal with the team. Rodgers mentioned how this season is about finishing with love, fun and peace for the career that he has had, which has spanned 20 years in the National Football League featuring a Super Bowl championship and multiple AP Most Valuable Player award victories. Greg Hill and his colleagues on the WEEI morning drive program discussed his remarks on their program during which co-host Courtney Cox conveyed her thoughts on why Rodgers made mention of this amid an interview before the season.

“Give me a break with the, ‘I just wanted to do this for fun for my final [season] – it’s been 20 years, haha, chuckle, chuckle,’” Cox said. “No, you did it so that you could tell everybody you’re retiring and have a farewell tour. That’s why you did it. You’re an egomaniac, a narcissist.”

Hill asked Cox if that is how she feels about players announcing their retirement before, pointing to how New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter received a retirement tour. In response, Cox admitted that she was being somewhat hypocritical about the situation and admitted that the fact that it is Rodgers is why she hates it. Chris Curtis, an executive producer for the show, opined that Rodgers is “loathsome” and that it is beneath the organization to bring them in. In fact, Curtis feels that the Green Bay Packers got better without Rodgers, to which co-host Jermaine Wiggins proceeded to admit that quarterback Jordan Love has looked good on the gridiron.

“It is kind of a douche move,” Hill said of Rodgers’ announcement. “Training camp hasn’t even started, and you need to declare that this is, this is the last [year]. ‘If you want to ask me about it when I come to your city, feel free to ask me about it. Feel free to bother all the other guys also all season long when you ask them about my last season.’”

Cox agreed with Hill’s point as it pertains to Rodgers’ new teammates and the potential questions they will need to field about what is expected to be his final season on the field. While Wiggins believes that the Steelers are built for this and will be able to handle the situation, the larger question pertains to whether or not he will be able to contribute to the team as it seeks to finish with a winning record and make a run at a Super Bowl championship.

“All of his teammates now – that’s your quarterback where you’re going to be hearing about it game after game, and you’re just trying to win,” Cox said. “That’s it. You’re just trying to win. You’re trying to make the Pittsburgh Steelers the best team imaginable, and now it’s the Aaron Rodgers show.”
