Tom Brady is just a season into his new career as lead analyst for NFL on FOX, and he’s already seeing benefits from the league’s decision to ease restrictions on broadcaster access. The NFL recently lifted rules that had prevented Brady from participating in production meetings with coaches and players during the week leading up to broadcasts. For Brady, the adjustment makes sense and brings his role more in line with that of traditional media members covering the league. Albeit the access for Brady will be restricted to remote access only.
Brady was a guest on Cris Collinsworth’s Pro Football Focus podcast. He discussed how he’s adjusted to the rules that were placed against him last season.
“I would listen to press conferences all week anyway,” Brady explained how he adjusted to the so-called ‘Brady Rules.’ “Whether it’s the weekly coaches press conference on a Wednesday or Friday, I’d listen to that. The players all speak to the media. So it’s not like you’re forcing players to answer a question.”
Brady added that his approach isn’t about prying but about gaining valuable insight that will ultimately help the viewer for his broadcasts on FOX Sports.
“The only thing I want to do is gain insight into the game to help the viewers understand it a little bit better,” he said. “You want both teams to perform very well. I don’t want to be on a broadcast and be negative about people. I want to showcase the great parts about every organization because I love the NFL. And if I can communicate that in a positive way to the viewer, great.”
Transitioning from quarterback to broadcaster comes with challenges, but Brady emphasized that his intentions are grounded in professionalism. He noted that while he won’t shy away from honesty on the air, his goal is to frame analysis in a constructive way.
“We’re on live television. I’m not going to lie about anything I’m seeing to the audience. I’m trying to be as raw and as unfiltered with as possible,” Brady said. “Me asking questions in a production meeting is no different than a media member asking a question in a weekly press conference. They’re going to answer it the same way.”
The access also strengthens his chemistry with the FOX crew. Brady said being in the room with producers, broadcasters, and support staff helps unify the team’s approach to each game.
“It’s nice for my crew to have me involved because I think as a cohesive unit, what we’re trying to do is going to be a real positive,” Brady said.
As with his playing career, preparation remains a central theme for Brady.
“I just want to go in there and be as professional as possible. And I am a professional. I was a professional as I played. I’m a professional in this role,” Brady said. “Ultimately, I want to be as prepared as I can be so the broadcast for our viewers is the best possible.”
