ESPN Signs John Buccigross to a Multi-Year Extension

"With right timing and lots of blessings it happened in 1996. I love my teammates and love sports. I'm a one uniform guy and this is the only team I want to play for."

Date:

Longtime John Buccigross will remain a central figure at ESPN after agreeing to a multi-year contract extension, continuing a tenure that spans nearly three decades. The move, first reported by Frank Seravalli, keeps one of the network’s most passionate hockey voices in place as ESPN builds on its NHL coverage.

Buccigross joined the company in October 1996 and has become synonymous with its hockey presentation ever since.

In a statement tied to the announcement, Buccigross reflected on his connection to ESPN, which dates back to his teenage years watching the network’s early days. He credited timing, persistence and strong relationships for helping turn that early admiration into a long-running career.

“ESPN was launched in 1979 when I was 13. When I saw Chris Berman do SportsCenter I said, ‘that’s where I want to work,'” said Buccigross. “With right timing and lots of blessings it happened in 1996. I love my teammates and love sports. I’m a one uniform guy and this is the only team I want to play for.”

The extension arrives at a fitting moment. Buccigross recently wrapped up play-by-play duties for the NCAA men’s hockey championship, marking his 13th time calling the Frozen Four. Throughout his career, Buccigross has worn several hats. He serves as an NHL play-by-play announcer and hosts The Point, a recurring studio program dedicated to league coverage. He also leads ESPN’s NHL Draft broadcasts and contributes as an anchor on SportsCenter, where many viewers first became familiar with his work.

That versatility has helped ESPN maintain consistency across its hockey coverage since reacquiring NHL media rights in 2021. With the league partnership set to continue through the 2027-28 season, retaining experienced talent like Buccigross provides stability during a period of growth.

Before arriving at ESPN, Buccigross worked in local television, including stops in Providence and Massachusetts. Over time, he also expanded his reach beyond broadcasting. Buccigross authored a book chronicling the career of former NHL player Keith Jones, adding another dimension to his connection with the sport.

For ESPN, the decision to extend Buccigross reflects both performance and fit. He has remained a consistent presence through multiple eras of the network’s hockey coverage, evolving alongside changing viewer habits and platforms.
