The popular podcast host Joe Rogan has recently been vocal in his opposition to cancel culture and has defended the importance of free speech. In a recent interview, he mentioned that his new comedy club in Austin, Texas, has featured comedians willing to tackle controversial topics and taboo subjects in their stand-up routines.
Notable names like Roseanne Barr and Dave Chappelle have graced the stage thanks to Rogan.
In an interview with The Free Press, Rogan revealed that his Comedy Mothership club features comedians who tackle topics that some consider taboo.
“It’s certainly good for Austin, but I’d say it’s even good for the country. I think right now we’re in a point where everyone, it’s cancel culture. Everyone’s afraid to speak up. Everyone’s afraid to speak out. Having a place like this where folks can come and joke around and have a good time, and not fear repercussions or fear that they’re not going to be booked again or anything like that,” Rogan said.
Rogan expressed his belief that humor can be found in almost any subject matter, even in things that some people find uncomfortable or offensive. He encouraged comedians to explore these topics and challenge societal norms.
According to Rogan, the Comedy Mothership club is designed to provide a safe space for comedians to experiment and refine their material. To maintain an environment conducive to creativity, the club requires guests to check their cell phones at the door, allowing performers to take risks without fear of recording and sharing their jokes without their permission.
“It is true freedom of speech, and it’s good for Austin, and it’s good for the country and Texas. It couldn’t be better,” he added.
The club has featured comedians barred from performing elsewhere, including Roseanne Barr, Dave Chappelle, and Shane Gillis. Rogan sees it as a creative space for comedians to experiment and develop their material. Rogan believes the club’s collaborative atmosphere encourages performers to push themselves and raise the bar for all comedians.
