The Rev. Jesse Jackson died on Tuesday at the age of 84.
A protege of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Jackson had been hospitalized in recent months and had been dealing with progressive supranuclear palsy, in addition to Parkinson’s Disease and other ailments.
He died on Tuesday morning surrounded by his family, a statement from his foundation, Rainbow PUSH Coalition, said.
“His unwavering commitment to justice, equality, and human rights helped shape a global movement for freedom and dignity,” the statement read. “A tireless change agent, he elevated the voices of the voiceless – from his Presidential campaigns in the 1980s to mobilizing millions to register to vote – leaving an indelible mark on history.”
Jackson — whose vision reshaped the Democratic Party during his bids for the White House in the 1980s — was the first candidate to make support of gay rights a large part of their campaign, in addition to his focus on issues facing Black Americans.
Following the announcement that the Rev. Jesse Jackson had died, many took to social media to share their condolences and memories of the important figure.
Several television networks and morning news shows broke into regularly-scheduled coverage to share that Jackson had died. Many took time to focus on his legacy and impact on the nation.
