Radio to See Nearly $120 Million in Congressional Campaign Spending, New Projections Show

0

While 2024 is a Presidential year, there are still hotly contested Senate and House races taking place, as well. Radio will be a big beneficiary of the increased campaign spending.

New projections from AdImpact show that a record $10.2 billion will be spent in the 2024 election cycle on all forms of media. That figure represents an uptick of 13% from the previous record of over $9 billion in 2020.

However, the Presidential campaign spending has slowed in recent weeks as former President Donald Trump has essentially sealed his victory in the Republican primary, and a lack of a challenger of Democrat Joe Biden.

But with close Congressional races expected in places like Arizona, Ohio, Florida, and Illinois, radio will see an increased spend in those races.

AdImpact projects $116 million will be spent on House and Senate races with radio, while an additional $84 million can be expected from the Presidential race.

The company also adds that Chicago ($7.6 million), Cleveland ($6 million), and Washington D.C. ($5.8 million) have seen the biggest spends in the political advertising sphere in recent weeks, according to Inside Radio.

ESPN Officially Announces College Football Playoff Extension Through 2031-32 Season; Can Now Sublicense Games

0

It’s official — the ESPN family of networks will be the exclusive home of the College Football Playoff until 2031-32. The network will amend the remaining two years on its existing deal with the CFP while simultaneously agreeing to a new six-year deal beginning in 2026-27.

The company today confirmed earlier reports by announcing details of the new CFP media rights agreement. ESPN will expand its current package for the final two years (through the 2025-26 season), adding all four of the new First Round games each year to ESPN’s existing New Year’s Six (now Quarterfinals and Semifinals) and the CFP National Championship rights in the new 12-team playoff that will launch this fall.

In addition, the new six-year agreement includes exclusive rights to all rounds of the expanded playoff – first round, quarterfinal, semifinal, and National Championship, as well as continued exclusive rights to all ancillary programming connected to the playoff, such as the CFP Selection Show, weekly Top 25 Rankings Shows and more. Starting in ’26-27, ESPN will air the CFP Championship Game on ABC.

Interestingly, ESPN can now sublicense games to other networks should it so choose, opening the door for FOX, CBS, or NBC to broadcast a College Football Playoff game for the first time.

“ESPN has worked very closely with the College Football Playoff over the past decade to build one of the most prominent events in American sports. We look forward to enhancing our valued relationship over the next two years, and then continuing it for six more as we embark on this new, expanded playoff era,” said ESPN chairman Jimmy Pitaro. “This agreement further solidifies ESPN as the home of college football, as well as the destination for the vast majority of major college championships for the next eight years.”

Just as college football is second only to the NFL in terms of popularity, the CFP was second only to the NFL Playoffs in terms of viewership — but not by much. 27.2 million people tuned in to Michigan-Alabama in the CFP Playoffs, while the title game between Michigan and Washington drew 25 million viewers. That being said, the lowest-viewed NFL playoff game, the Peacock-exclusive Chiefs/Dolphins Wild Card Game, averaged 23 million, with the games on linear television averaging 40 million viewers.

Netflix Announces ‘Receiver,’ A Follow-Up to ‘Quarterback’ Series

0

Following the success of its Quarterback series, Netflix is looking at receivers for its next NFL Films project. The aptly named Receiver will follow five of the best receivers in football — Davante Adams, Justin Jefferson, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Deebo Samuel, and George Kittle — on and off the field.

The show is a joint production between NFL Films, Peyton Manning’s Omaha Productions, and Patrick Mahomes’ 2PM Productions.

“We are excited to be working again with Netflix and NFL Films to give fans unprecedented access to what it’s like to play receiver at the highest level,” said Manning. “As we did with Quarterback, we look forward to telling the stories of five incredible receivers, each with their unique personality, skillset, and motivation for what drives them to be the best.”

Season two of Quarterback was originally announced, with Patrick Mahomes, Kirk Cousins, Matthew Stafford, and Marcus Mariota among the participants slated to appear. Some like Sports Radio 610’s Sean Pendergast questioned Mariota and Cousins’ inclusion, calling them uninteresting. However, as more top QBs declined to be on the show, the producers pivoted and got buy-in from some of the very best receivers in football.

“We were thrilled last summer to see audiences all over the world diving into the lives of NFL quarterbacks,” said Joe Zucco, NFL Films Supervising Producer. “We believe the extraordinary skills, dedication and passion of the NFL’s great wide receivers – and one tight end – will make a perfect follow-up.”

Receiver is set to release this summer with no official release date.

Jesse Watters: ‘When You Read the News, Assume It’s Not True’

0

Media reaction continues to pour in from the responses to former President Donald Trump saying there would be a “bloodbath” if he wasn’t elected this November. Fox News primetime host Jesse Watters says it’s the latest in a long line of falsehoods peddled by media members on the other side of the political aisle.

While discussing the situation Monday, Watters argued against the idea that Trump was calling for political violence to those who oppose him. He also showed a montage of other pundits and Democratic lawmakers using the term out of context.

Jesse Watters then shared his opinion that the uproar from media members was a tactic to put the perceived failures of President Biden on the backburner and turn Trump into the villain.

“The democrat media industrial complex is preying on you. They don’t want you to read, they don’t want you to be curious. They want you to be stupid, scared, and oblivious – easy marks for psyops,” Watters said. “They don’t have any faith in the people they have a social contract with.”

That’s when he shared a quip about what you should and shouldn’t believe from mainstream news outlets.

“Thomas Jefferson famously said quote, ‘Nothing can now be believed which is seen in a newspaper.’ So when you read the news, assume it’s not true – until you watch Jesse Watters Primetime.”

Marc Ryan took to X to announce his new position with 97.1 The Ticket in Detroit. He also sent a heartfelt message to those he worked with and those who listened while he was the afternoon host for The Fan Upstate in Greenville, South Carolina.

Ryan wrote, “For years, I’ve carried around a post-it note with three stations on it. My dream was to one day land a full-time position at one of them. Today, that dream is realized. I’m grateful [and] excited to share I’ve accepted a full-time host position at 97.1 The Ticket in Detroit, recently named one of the five best sports stations in the country.”

As for what his duties will be in Detroit, Ryan said, “In this role, I’ll host throughout the schedule and do pre- and post-game shows for the Tigers, Lions, Red Wings and Pistons. Jim Costa held this role previously. Needless to say, I have big shoes to fill.”

Ryan, who has also been heard previously in Houston, Tampa and Atlanta, talked about his new market. “Folks told me I wouldn’t like Detroit, and when I visited last month,” he said. “I can tell you they were right. I didn’t like it. I LOVED it. My new city is on [fire] with sports passion, and I CAN’T WAIT to get going. My wife’s family is in Detroit [and the] surrounding area, too.”

To those he is leaving, Ryan said, “My family at Audacy Greenville and The Fan Upstate have been amazing to me, and I will miss them dearly. Mark Hendrix, Steve Sinicropi, thank you for your unwavering belief in me. And to you, our listeners, thank you so much for welcoming me to this amazing place, the Upstate. It was an unbelievable honor to be your afternoon host, and sometimes your roast.”

As he signed off, Ryan again spoke to the listeners in Greenville, saying, “…From the fiery debate to the fun, I wouldn’t change a thing. Thanks for the privilege. The best decision I ever made was coming here.”

Buck Sexton: Don Lemon Has Always Been a Passive-Aggressive Interviewer

0

Don Lemon saw his contract with X canceled after a contentious interview with owner Elon Musk. Buck Sexton believes it’s the same old, same old from the CNN anchor.

While discussing the first episode of The Don Lemon Show Monday, Sexton noted he had a past history with Lemon from his time as a CNN contributor, and his memories weren’t fond ones.

“I’m trying to think of how to say this on radio without getting in trouble. A dumpster fire of low-caliber garbage. There we go. It’s just not a good news program,” said Sexton. “But I was being paid at the time by CNN, and when you’re being paid and you’re on TV and you have no money and you have a contract, you go on the shows they tell you to go on.”

When co-host Clay Travis shared he hadn’t watched the entire interview, outside of a roughly two-minute clip of Musk railing against Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion efforts in America, calling Lemon’s encapsulation of the topic “dumb”, Buck Sexton shared he had watched the entire hour-long interview.

His takeaways from the conversation were that Lemon hasn’t learned anything since his 2023 ouster from CNN.

“He does the passive-aggressive thing though, of ‘Hey, so let me ask you a normal question.’ Then ‘Why are you such a racist?’ And then ‘Hey, how’s Tesla going? And why are you such a racist?’ in and out in and out.”

Lemon released his discussion with Musk Monday morning, with more than 1.3 million views on X and 500,000 views on YouTube for the debut.

Eric Von Haessler: Cable News Election Coverage Will Only Get More Hyperbolic

0

Reactions continue to come in after media outlets ran with comments claiming former President Donald Trump pitched political violence at a campaign rally. 95.5 WSB host Eric Von Haessler believes we’re only getting started.

While discussing the reaction to Trump saying there would be a “bloodbath” if he wasn’t elected in November, Von Haessler argued it was very simple to decipher what the context behind the quote was. He continued by noting that coverage of both Trump and Biden will only get more sensationalized as the election season continues.

“If you think it was hyperbolic up to now, because now the people have already said, ‘Yeah, as far as the Biden policies go, we maybe we didn’t like January 6,’ or whatever, but as far as Trump policies versus Biden policies, people have made up their minds. So it’s not about policy. Now, it’s just got to be about this guy is going to murder everybody who didn’t vote for him.”

Eric Von Haessler then pointed out his belief that cable news outlets don’t care whether or not they’re sharing accurate information.

“I will say over and over again: I absolutely do not give a damn who you vote for. But if the national media doesn’t understand, or I guess now they just don’t care, about the separation between the people in them. They’ve got their core audience that they’re serving whether you’re MSNBC or Fox or CNN and they just don’t care.”

The 95.5 WSB host then argued that CNN’s Jake Tapper deliberately took Trump’s quotes of context.

“I think he knows what he’s doing and to hell with all of them,” The Von Haessler Doctrine host concluded. “Everyone who works at Fox, everyone who works at CNN, everyone who works at MSNBC, everyone who works at NewsNation, Cheesy (sic), the rest, whoever, to hell with all of you. You’re disgusting human beings.”

Grace Curley: There Will Always Be ‘Nefarious Actors’ in Media Coverage of Donald Trump

0

A comment from former President Donald Trump has been deciphered differently depending on which side of the political aisle the commenter falls on, and Grace Curley argues that’s an issue when it comes to covering the former Commander-in-Chief.

At an Ohio campaign rally, Trump made mention of Chinese automaker investments in Mexico. In his statement, the 45th President said “We’re gonna put a 100% tariff on every single car that comes across the line. And you’re not gonna be able to sell those guys if I get elected. Now, if I don’t get elected, it’s going to be a bloodbath for the whole– that’s gonna be the least of it. It’s gonna be a bloodbath for the country. That’ll be the least of it.”

Some took the “bloodbath for the country” comment and argued the former President was once again espousing violent rhetoric. Meanwhile, his backers argued the quip was taken out of context, and that he meant the “bloodbath” would be for the automotive industry and the Chinese and Mexican economies.

On The Grace Curley Show, the Boston-based host alleged this is the latest in a long line of media members purposely taking him out of context.

It’s important for Trump supporters to remind yourselves that it doesn’t matter how careful he tries to be or how much context he tries to put things in,” said Curley. “These are nefarious actors who are going to always not only assume the worst in him, but twist his words to whatever they want. And that’s what that solidified for me. I was like, ‘Oh, so it doesn’t really matter what he says. They’re always going to find a way to lie about him.’ And that’s their MO.”
