Dukes & Bell of 92.9 The Game Respond to Report FOX Considered an NIL Deal for Caitlin Clark

0

Carl Dukes and Mike Bell, along with Executive Producer Chris ‘Turtle’ Thomas, discussed the recent report from John Ourand of Puck about Iowa women’s basketball star Caitlin Clark. The report says FOX “contemplated reaching out to other networks to see if they could come up with an enticing NIL offer that would convince her to stay in the college ranks for one more season.”

Dukes & Bell, the afternoon drive show on 92.9 The Game in Atlanta, do a segment called “Yeah Man, No Man,” where Thomas does rapid fire questions to which the hosts say either “Yeah, man,” or “No, man” as their response.

“I read something in preparation today for “Yeah Man, No Man” that really sort of stuck out to me like a sore thumb and should be somethng we keep our eyes on in the years to come. We all know that a lot of people, 3.29 million exactly by the way, watched Caitlin Clark break the record for points. Now, that was awesome and she is going to be a star at the next level.

“Apparently, according to [Puck], FOX Sports was in an arrangement with other TV networks to apparently try to offer her an NIL deal to stay in college for an extra year because the ratings have been so good for the networks. Now, for me, this is some murky territory and waters that you’re getting in to. So, “Yeah Man, No Man,” do you think it’s OK if a TV network pays an athlete to be in college?”

Bell responded, “It’s kind of the next progression of where we are, uintil the guardrails come up, which are never coming, so I got no problem with it.”

Carl Dukes looked at the bigger picture of the amount of money that would come in to the networks versus the amount Caitlin Clark would receive in the deal.

“They’re going to make a lot more money than they’re going to pay Caitlin Clark,” he said. “And if you’re saying, ‘hey we need you to stay in college because everytime you play the numbers are off the charts, which means I can charge more for advertising, right?’ How much money are they making versus how much money they are paying her? It’s not equal, now I’m not saying it should be but…it’s going to be nowhere close to where it should be. So, why if I am Caitlin Clark do I sacrifice this?”

Thomas then followed up with a question that seems almost certain to be an issue that comes up again down the road. “Carl, let me ask you this, would you be OK with ESPN sponsoring Arch Manning next year?”

“Now it’s a conflict of interest,” Dukes said. “If you’re involved in the same group that decides who goes to the College Football Playoff and where they’re ranked, some would say that’s a road you cant go down…I think there’s a thin line between crossing over and saying ‘yeah, we’d love to support this athlete,’ but also people are already out there with all these conspiracy theories about how this stuff goes down – the referees are in on it, now you’re going to have the networks in on it? I think there’s a thin line between crossing over on that.”

Brendan Tobin on WQAM: Bill Simmons of The Ringer is an “A-1 Hater”

0

Brendan Tobin and Leroy Hoard of WQAM Miami’s midday show Tobin & Leroy, responded to recent comments made by Bill Simmons from The Ringer. Talking to Ryen Russillo on his podcast, Simmons went off on a rant about the Miami Heat.

“Are you guys familiar with Bill Simmons?,” Tobin asked. “His podcast with Ryen Russillo, which is just awful listening, but if you guys like to be angry you can check that out.

“Bill Simmons was beside himself this week because he’s afraid, he’s a fearful man and he knows what’s coming. The Miami Heat are rounding in to form – they could bounce the Celtics in the second round at this pace. It may not even get to the Eastern Conference Finals for the Celtics this year, which is what has him nervous.”

The hosts played a clip of what Simmons had to say, which boiled down to Simmons believing everything the Heat have accomplished in this current era has been from luck. Simmons is a Celtics fan and for those unaware, the Heat have beaten the Celtics in the Eastern Conference Finals three times since 2012, twice winning in the seventh game of the series.

Tobin continued, “I love the fact that this loser sits there in his little NBA dungeon and copes and tries to figure out how the Heat keep doing it and how they keep finding themselves in this position. Don’t worry about it Bill, call it luck, call it chance, call it fate, call it whatever you want, it’s still ‘Heat in 5’ you bumb.”

In summing up his feelings towards Simmons, Tobin said, “He’s an A-1 hater but… he’s more of an A-1 coward, that’s what he is.”

Boomer & Gio: Somebody is Going to Make it Worthwhile for Jason Kelce to be an Analyst

0

Now that Jason Kelce has made his retirement from the NFL official, it is time to speculate on what might happen next. Kelce has reportedly already met with ESPN, FOX Sports, Amazon Prime Video and CBS Sports about joining their NFL coverage, however, Boomer Esiason and Gregg Giannotti talked this morning on WFAN about which role suits Kelce best.

“Every single network and streaming service is going to be vying for his services if he wants to be a broadcaster, which I’m assuming he is going to want to do in his retirement,” said Giannotti. “That podcast that him and Travis have, very popular, you can tell he’s a good talker, he’s a good speaker, he is someone where it should come natural to him being on TV. But, what would his role be? I don’t see him as a color analyst because he seems a little rougher around the edges to be able to do that.”

“He would have to be like a studio analyst,” Boomer said. “But, the thing about it is he has made a ton of money in his life, and he has little kids, is he going to want to commit to that type of role every single weekend?”

Esiason mentioned Tom Brady took a year off and that JJ Watt, who lives in Phoenix, only worked 6 weeks for CBS on NFL Today in New York because he just had a baby and didn’t want to travel every week. Boomer speculated guys like Kelce and others that follow may look for schedules similar to what Watt’s was, not just because of travel or time commitment, but because they don’t need the money. “The guys coming out now made a ton of money,” he said.

Giannotti pointed to the large deals given to Tom Brady and Tony Romo, but Esiason thinks those contracts had a lot to do with timing of different pieces moving around, such as Joe Buck and Troy Aikman going to ESPN.

Giannotti said, “You still get a lot of money if you are one of the top guys and I can imagine that somebody is going to make it worthwhile for someone like Jason Kelce…I can’t imagine a guy like that, who loves the game like he does, loves a microphone, is going to able to stay away from a job in this industry where somebody is going to pay him multiple millions of dollars to talk about the game.”

While Giannotti mentioned earlier he didn’t think Kelce would make a great color analyst, he did come back later with an interesting question and comparison. “Could Jason Kelce develop in to that John Madden-ish of now time, an intense, sort of funny, ‘BOOM!,’ look at that offensive lineman type of guy?”
