Mike Breen: NBA Making a “Mistake” With No Playoff Games on Regional Sports Networks

0

New York Knicks play-by-play voice Mike Breen says the rapid shift in NBA media distribution threatens the long-term future of regional sports networks, warning that the league risks weakening one of the strongest emotional ties fans have to their teams.

Speaking in an interview with BALLISLIFE.com about the changing landscape. Breen said he fears RSNs are slowly being pushed aside as more games move to national platforms. While the NBA’s new media rights cycle is expanding the number of games airing on major broadcast and streaming outlets. He cautioned that the industry must not overlook what local broadcasts provide.

“Some of the changes are not for the better for the RSNs,” Breen said. “We have to be careful not to lose the RSNs because, for fans, that’s your connection to the team. Usually the local announcers, whether it’s TV or radio, they become part of the family.”

Breen pointed to his own upbringing as an example of the bond fans build with local voices. Listening to Marv Albert alongside Cal Ramsey or John Andariese helped form his early attachment to the Knicks. That familiarity, he said, still shapes how fans relate to their favorite teams today — not just in basketball, but across sports.

“It’s something that I think is a staple to becoming a fan of a team. We can’t lose that,” he said.

However, the NBA’s evolving national strategy appears to be squeezing out regional partners. Breen noted that, for the first time, no playoff games this season will air on local networks. Eliminating decades of tradition in markets where fans were accustomed to hearing their own broadcasters call postseason moments.

“With all the new national media rights to different broadcast outlets. The emphasis on the regional sports networks seems to be less and less,” Breen said. “For example, this year, there are no playoff games that will be on regional networks for the first time, and I think that’s a mistake.”

He acknowledged national partners invest heavily for exclusivity, including ESPN, where he works the NBA postseason and Finals. Still, he believes the league could carve out space for local crews during the playoffs without meaningfully affecting national ratings.

“Having a little side for the original broadcasters just to do some of the important games, I don’t think that there’s that much of a factor ratings-wise to impact them,” he said. “I wish they would reconsider that, but I don’t think that’s ever going to happen.”

As the league moves deeper into an era defined by streaming platforms, expanded national windows, and shifting distribution strategies, Breen urged executives not to overlook the foundational role RSNs play in cultivating fandom.

“I just think that we can’t lose sight of the fact that the regional networks are important to the fans,” Breen said. “I hope they don’t keep becoming less and less of a presence, because that’s a big part of why the younger generation develops that true passion for their team.”

Megyn Kelly: Mark Levin Attacks on Tucker Carlson ‘Too Much, Too Far, and Dangerous’

0

Tucker Carlson and Mark Levin have been embroiled in a war of words in recent weeks. Megyn Kelly said one side has gone too far.

Kelly shared on her SiriusXM show that she believes Mark Levin is in the wrong for his recent comments about Carlson, who he called “Marxist”, “Islamist”, and an “anti-American Jew hater,” on top of other insults.

Levin also shared that Tucker Carlson asked to debate him at Turning Point USA’s Americafest in December. However, Mark Levin said he would never share the stage with Carlson, calling him an anti-Semite in the process.

Megyn Kelly didn’t appreciate the terms used by Levin, arguing that conservatives have taken years to get the other side of the political aisle to stop using them.

“We just finished a several-year period where we tried to make clear to the left that those terms are not acceptable in the public dialogue,” said Kelly. “They are too incendiary. They’re going to get somebody killed, like President Trump or Charlie Kirk.”

“‘Fascistic’, ‘neo Nazi’, ‘radical right.’ That is no way to be talking about Tucker,” Kelly concluded. “It’s too much. It’s too far. And it’s dangerous.”

Kelly added that she found Mark Levin’s comments — which have also been directed at her in recent weeks — “vile.”

Paul Finebaum Shares Timetable on Decision To Leave ESPN for Alabama Senate Run

0

ESPN personality Paul Finebaum is considering a run for the U.S. Senate in Alabama, and Finebaum announced his timetable to make a final decision.

During an appearance on The Clay & Buck Show on Premiere Radio Networks, Finebaum, 70, said his timetable is closely tied to his contractual obligations with ESPN.

“I feel like I have to get to the end of the [college football] season before making a decision. If it costs me getting in, then I will find something else to let my mind wander on,” he said.

He added that the choice is deeply personal, noting his gratitude to ESPN president Burke Magnus for allowing him the space to weigh his next steps.

“It’s not easy. That’s my decision, nobody else’s,” said Finebaum. “I do want to thank Burke Magnus at ESPN for allowing me this time. He’s the top person in my world. A lot of people would have said, Listen, you have to, you’re out. You’re not going to be able to talk about this at this situation.”

Finebaum, widely known as the “Voice of the SEC,” has been with ESPN since 2013 after making his mark on Alabama radio and local newspapers, including the Birmingham Post-Herald and Mobile Press-Register. His eponymous four-hour radio show airs five days a week and is simulcast on the SEC Network.

He is also a frequent guest on ESPN’s studio shows, including Get Up, First Take, SportsCenter, and College Football Live.

Finebaum’s interest in politics was sparked by the assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, which he reflected on during an interview with Clay Travis earlier this year. Though he did not know Kirk personally, Finebaum described the event as “numb” and “empty” but also an “awakening,” prompting him to reconsider life priorities and explore a potential second act in public service.

Former Auburn football coach turned U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville has announced a run for governor, potentially opening a Senate seat. Finebaum is reportedly close with retired Auburn basketball coach Bruce Pearl, who considered a Senate run before joining TNT Sports as a studio analyst.

Finebaum told OutKick’s Clay Travis that Pearl’s candidacy would have likely deterred him from entering the race. ESPN has not commented on Finebaum’s political considerations.

Stephen A. Smith: Every Republican I’ve Asked Has Jumped to Join My SiriusXM Politics Show

0

Stephen A. Smith hosts a weekly political show with SiriusXM on P.O.T.U.S. Channel 124. But you often don’t hear as many Democrats as he’d like on the program, and is now sharing why.

During his most recent show with the satellite broadcaster, Stephen A. Smith shared that he’s put in requests to interview some of the most prominent Democratic lawmakers.

But they haven’t been as receptive as their Republican counterparts, which is a sticking point for him.

“Jasmine Crockett has been invited on this show for four months. AOC has been on this show for four months,” Smith said. “Gavin Newsom has been invited on this show longer than that. Props to Hakeem Jeffries, he’s a friend of the show, always welcome on here. I like that man. I respect him.

“Chuck Schumer’s been invited on this show. Hasn’t shown up,” Smith continued. “Where they at? Every single Republican I have asked to show up on this show has either said yes or that they’re coming. Not the Dems. Why?”

Stephen A. Smith debuted his Straight Shooter program in September. That show airs on P.O.T.U.S. on Wednesdays from 6-8 PM ET. His guest list is often made up of bipartisan elected officials or media members representing both sides of the political aisle.

Peacock, NBC Sports Return With Madden NFL Cast on Thanksgiving Night

0

NBC Sports and Peacock are teaming up again with the NFL, EA SPORTS, and Genius Sports for the second annual EA SPORTS Madden NFL Cast. This year moving to primetime on Thanksgiving, November 27. The exclusive stream will feature the Baltimore Ravens hosting the Cincinnati Bengals at M&T Bank Stadium at 8 p.m. ET, capping the NFL’s John Madden Thanksgiving Celebration tripleheader.

The Madden NFL Cast, first introduced last December. Combines live-action football with video game elements to create an immersive, data-powered viewing experience.

The broadcast integrates Madden NFL 26 graphics, route trees, play cards, and player ratings with NFL Next Gen Stats and GeniusIQ, Genius Sports’ AI-driven data platform. Fans can expect animated overlays and real-time insights designed to transform the way viewers understand football strategy.

This year introduces a notable change in perspective. The broadcast will primarily use the hi-sky camera located behind the quarterback. The viewpoint familiar to Madden gamers—rather than the traditional sideline camera. The change aims to replicate the video game experience while giving fans a fresh perspective on on-field strategy.

NBC Sports’ play-by-play announcer Paul Burmeister returns, joined by former NFL quarterback and Madden expert Kurt Benkert, who will analyze plays using interactive graphics. Three-time All-Pro defensive back Tyrann Mathieu joins the team this year, bringing his on-field experience to the commentary. Six-time Bengals Pro Bowl wide receiver Chad Johnson also returns as “ratings adjuster.” Fine-tuning player ratings in real time from the stadium alongside reporter Kay Adams.

“We are excited to once again work with the NFL, EA SPORTS, and Genius Sports to offer fans the ability to watch Madden NFL come to life, exclusively on Peacock,” said NBC Sports Executive Producer Fred Gaudelli. “It’s appropriate that this year’s Madden NFL Cast takes place on Thanksgiving, an NFL holiday tradition that meant so much to John Madden.”

Grace Senko, NFL vice president of media strategy and business development, added, “John Madden was the ultimate teacher, and this production will honor his contributions to the game on a holiday he helped make synonymous with football.”

EA SPORTS VP Evan Dexter emphasized the evolving nature of sports entertainment: “The Madden NFL Cast represents our vision of growing the love of football by creating the most immersive, data-powered viewership experience possible using the unique elements of Madden. This partnership with NBC Sports, the NFL, and Genius Sports champions that mission and proves alternative broadcasts aren’t just a trend—they’re the future.”

The Madden NFL Cast will be produced by Steve Greenberg and directed by Tim Nelson. NBC Sports’ traditional coverage of the Bengals-Ravens matchup will air simultaneously across NBC, Peacock, Telemundo, and Universo.

Accomplished Rock Program Director Keith Cunningham Launches Black Box Group, Exits 95.5 KLOS in Los Angeles

0

Veteran programmer, strategist, brand fixer and Barrett Media columnist Keith Cunningham is making a big professional change. Cunningham is launching Black Box Group, a high impact, low overhead solution to today’s media challenges.

With the launch of his new company, Cunningham exits his role as program director at 95.5 KLOS in Los Angeles. He has led the iconic rock station since March 2015. No word yet on how KLOS will handle programming decisions moving forward.

Black Box Group will rely on Cunningham’s track record of taking multi-million-dollar brands from worst to first. According to the company’s announcement, Black Box will tap a trusted network of top-tier creative, analytical, and executional specialists to deliver elite creative insight, surgical strategies, and measurable results for audio and media brands, talent, artists, and executives.

“While it starts with content, traditional ratings and revenue playbooks have been torched, everyone is now a creator, and the line from A to B changes with every competitive situation,” said Cunningham. “The landscape is faster, deeper, and more complex, but complexity becomes simple if you know how to decode it, and that’s what I do.”

Cunningham’s programming resume is extensive. Prior to taking the reins at KLOS, Keith spent time programming in Seattle, San Francisco, San Jose and Denver. He also has prior consulting experience, working with Jacobs Media. While there, he supported and advised 20+ stations including 91X, The End 107.7, and X96.

His work at KLOS was recognized favorably in Barrett Media’s Top 20 lists last year. Cunningham was voted the #2 PD of 2024 in the Rock Programmers category. He also earned a 3rd place finish in the Classic Rock PDs category.

Black Box Group is expected to offer strategic advisory focused on revenue, brand and audience growth. Cunningham says the company will also provide message mastery, talent development and recruitment, and market positioning for consumer-facing companies ready for their next chapter.

Newsmax Reports 4% Revenue Increase During 2025’s 3rd Quarter

0

Newsmax has reported its third-quarter financial numbers, and the company saw an uptick in overall revenue during the period.

During July, August, and September, Newsmax reported a total of $45.3 million in overall revenue, representing a 4% year-over-year increase.

Broadcast revenue grew 10.1% compared to the same period in 2024, with $36.6 million being secured by the organization. Affiliate revenue grew 22.3% during the quarter, while subscription revenue remained relatively flat at $6.9 million.

Advertising revenue fell by 1.6% year-over-year. However, the company points toward a lack of political advertising as reason for the slight downturn.

“Our performance this quarter reflects the strength of our diversified revenue model, the growing reach of our cable and FAST channels, and the continued engagement of audiences across all of our platforms,” said Newsmax CEO Chris Ruddy. “Since going public, we have focused on building a company positioned for sustainable, long-term growth.

“Our strong balance sheet and access to the public markets give us the flexibility to invest strategically, expand our distribution, and continue delivering compelling content that resonates with viewers,” Ruddy added. “We remain focused on sustainable, long-term growth and on delivering consistent value for our shareholders.”

The company reported a net loss of $4.1 million during the quarter, down from the $9.8 million it lost in the same quarter in 2024. Its Adjusted EBITDA for the quarter was $1.8 million.

Newsmax also shared that it was adjusting its full-year revenue guidance from $180 million to $190 million.

iHeartMedia Announces Holiday Music Flip With Return of iHeartRadio Holiday Special

0

iHeartMedia has officially kicked off its annual transition to all-holiday music. Flipping more than 95 stations nationwide to festive programming that will run 24/7 through Christmas Day.

The company announced that its lineup once again blends contemporary artists with timeless holiday staples from Bing Crosby, Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra and others. Marking the unofficial start of the audio industry’s most predictable—and profitable—seasonal surge.

Additionally, iHeartMedia will bring back the iHeartRadio Holiday Special on November 26. Mario Lopez returns as host of the nationwide broadcast. Which will feature interviews with artists including Goo Goo Dolls, Gwen Stefani, Lady A, Meghan Trainor, Pentatonix, and Taylor Momsen of The Pretty Reckless.

The conversations will highlight each artist’s holiday traditions, favorite seasonal songs, and behind-the-scenes memories. Connected to the music that dominates playlists this time of year. The special will air at 7 p.m. local time across iHeart stations and stream at 7 p.m. ET on the Holiday Season Radio channel within the iHeartRadio app.

For iHeartMedia, the flip isn’t just a programming move—it’s a strategic position the company has owned for years. The broadcaster says converting stations to wall-to-wall holiday music through December 25 has made it the country’s top destination for seasonal listening. A standing that often translates into strong advertiser interest and elevated time spent listening.

Beyond the terrestrial dial, the iHeartRadio app continues to expand the company’s holiday footprint. Listeners can access an array of themed channels across more than 500 platforms and 2,000 devices. Flagship stations include “iHeart Christmas,” which offers a full mix of classics and contemporary hits, and “North Pole Radio,” hosted by Santa Claus himself.

Additional genre-specific holiday channels. Ranging from country and jazz to rock and R&B. Round out a catalog designed to keep audiences engaged throughout the season. Users can find the full collection by searching “iHeart Holiday” in the app.

Tom Poleman, Chief Programming Officer for iHeartMedia. He said the combination of nostalgia, tradition, and artist participation continues to resonate with audiences.

“Every holiday season, our stations set the tone with beloved festive tunes that span generations from Christmas classics to today’s newest holiday songs,” Poleman said. “Our Holiday Special resonates so deeply with our listeners because it’s more than just our radio stations flipping to holiday music, it’s a heartfelt celebration where artists open up and share personal stories behind the season with fans. It’s a time of joy and nostalgia — and we’re honored to be part of it year after year.”

KNX News Elevates Alex Silverman to Weekday Anchor

0

More changes are coming to KNX News, as Alex Silverman is adding weekday anchor duties after previously serving in a more limited capacity.

In a post on social media, Silverman shared the details of his new role with the Audacy Los Angeles all-news brand.

“I’ve had the privilege of anchoring middays and afternoons, a couple days per week here at KNX News. And I’m really excited and super grateful that, starting Monday, I’ll be doing it every weekday,” said Silverman.

Silverman will anchor from 11 AM to Noon, 1-2 PM, 3-4 PM, and 5-6 PM.

“If you care about what’s happening in Los Angeles … hope you can join me,” Silverman added. “Because, now more than ever, like I’ve been saying at the end of the show every day, it matters where you get your news.”

In September, Silverman rejoined the station after exiting from his role as Brand Manager in the early portions of 2025. At the time of his departure, he had spent 14 years working in all-news radio for Audacy at brands like 880 WCBS in New York, KYW in Philadelphia, and KNX News.

Silverman’s elevation comes as other changes are taking place at KNX News. Longtime anchor Vicky Moore exited last week, sharing that her final day with the station was on Friday. She had been with the brand for nearly 22 years. Her morning co-anchor, Mike Simpson, will remain in the daypart and will work alongside Margaret Carrero. Carrero anchored the midday and afternoon windows being assumed by Silverman.

ESPN Adds Brian Windhorst to NBA Countdown

0

ESPN is rolling out a fresh look for NBA Countdown, adding new voices and upgraded technology as the network prepares for its next slate of marquee game nights. The revamped studio team will debut Wednesday, November 19, at 6:30 p.m. ET on ESPN and the ESPN App.

Senior writer Brian Windhorst joins the program after signing a multi-year extension with the network. His addition strengthens a panel that will now feature 2023 NBA champion head coach Michael Malone and 2008 NBA champion Kendrick Perkins as analysts.

Malone, who recently joined ESPN, brings a championship resume and a coach’s perspective to the broadcast. Perkins returns in his established role. Offering a blend of insight and personality that has become central to ESPN’s NBA coverage.

Meanwhile, Malika Andrews will continue as host for a third season. Andrews has become a key face of the network’s NBA programming. She’ll continue to guide pregame and halftime coverage for select NBA on ESPN broadcasts throughout the year.

Additionally, Senior NBA Insider Shams Charania will maintain a regular presence on the show. Delivering news, reporting updates, and league developments.

Beyond personnel changes, ESPN is upgrading the viewing experience with expanded use of Virtual Reality 2.0 inside its Los Angeles NBA studio. The enhanced technology creates a virtual environment that places analysts directly inside animated sequences from around the league.

The system made its initial debut during the 2025 Western Conference Finals. ESPN says this new version offers improved stability, a more natural first-person point of view, and photo-realistic player avatars.

The VR space will be featured across NBA Countdown and NBA Today, enabling Malone, Perkins, and analyst Chiney Ogwumike to break down plays and concepts within an immersive, court-level setting. ESPN believes the tool will help analysts better demonstrate strategy while giving fans a more dynamic look at the game.
