Even though Doug Gottlieb was named the head coach of the Green Bay Phoenix men’s basketball team during the offseason, he has continued to host his weekday sports radio program and podcast with FOX Sports Radio. Gottlieb signed a contract that allows him to perform both endeavors as he balances his passions for coaching and radio amid the new season. While he did not have any Division I head coaching experience, he had previously worked on the sidelines for Team USA at the Maccabiah Games and also runs an Amateur Athletic Union program started by his father, Bob Gottlieb, the former coach of the Milwaukee Panthers.
The Phoenix men’s basketball team has started the season with two wins and five losses as the team looks to win the NCAA Horizon League Conference. A recent social media post divulging his daily schedule quickly went viral, which effectively begins at 10 a.m. for shootaround with his team. Outlining a typical road game configuration, he arrives back at the hotel at noon and begins taping his podcast at 2 p.m.
One hour later, Gottlieb is live on FOX Sports Radio and hosts his eponymous radio program until 5 p.m. Tip-off for the basketball game commences at 7 p.m., requiring him to make it back to the arena and prepare his team for the matchup. Anthony Lima, co-host of morning drive on 92.3 The Fan, discussed the arrangement within the ‘About Last Night’ segment on Tuesday’s edition of the program.
“Doug Gottlieb is not a former national radio personality,” Lima explained. “He is a current podcaster and national radio personality. Now you wonder how that works? Well, it’s in his contract.”
Ken Carman, who co-hosts morning drive with Lima, also keeps a busy schedule with his work at the radio station and FOX 8 News as its evening sports anchor. Recognizing this, Lima asked Carman his thoughts on Gottlieb’s agenda between his work in media and on the hardwood.
“Yeah, I appreciate it,” Carman said. “I appreciate it if he wins. I think there’s going to be lots of questions if they don’t. You put yourself out there, and then it goes, ‘Well, what are you really doing here? Do you just do this because you want to be around basketball and do you want to make your days more hectic or are we actually trying to win here?’”
Lima elucidated that Gottlieb has always wanted to coach at Oklahoma State, his alma mater with whom he stood out in NCAA play and helped the team reach the Elite Eight. Although he had interviewed for the school’s head coaching job, no deal was materialized, but he continued his pursuits of another position around the country. Green Bay plays two games against Cleveland State University this year, including a matchup at the Wolstein Center on Saturday, Jan. 25.
“On a Saturday?,” Carman exclaimed. “Well, you know where you and I are going to be. We are in, absolutely. Call the guys at Cleveland State now.”
Prior to the Cleveland State home game, the two teams face one another on Saturday, Dec. 7 from the Resch Center. Lima proceeded to ask his co-host whether they would be able to heckle Gottlieb by sitting behind the Green Bay bench for the late-January contest.
“I am going to get a transcript of a soliloquy he had,” Carman said, “and I’m going to read it verbatim behind his bench until he throws me out.”
