Chicago’s 120 Sports Set To Launch

It could prove to be the next big thing in the crowded sports media world. Then again.

Set to go live at 5 p.m. Central DaylightTime today, Chicago-based 120 Sports, a digitally-focused company, aims to spark interest in its live-streaming coverage of collegiate and professional sports with a new, but untested concept centered on the 120-second video bite.

In an interview, 120 Sports Executive Vice President Matt Carstens said the 120-second live-streaming concept was inspired by the short, pithy approach to communication that Twitter has made a mainstay in a world where social media is now a huge force.

When 120 Sports starts later today, it will broadcast live daily from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. Central Time from a sports-themed studio the company has built at the Harpo Studios complex on the city’s near west side that formerly housed Oprah Winfrey‘s now-shuttered talk show.

In the early going, a pool of 14 on-air hosts will shoulder much of the responsibility for keeping viewers engaged with 120 Sports’ content. According to Carstens, many of the talent that have been tapped to launch 120 Sports are relatively young. But they all have the ability, he insisted, to switch gears quickly and engagingly discuss a range of sports from college basketball to professional hockey as the breaking and trending news developments of any given day dictate.
