The St. Louis Cardinals begin exhibition play next week, and for the first time audio coverage of all their spring games will be available. That’s because online-only broadcasts of the 10 games not carried by the Cardinals Radio Network have been added.
Those productions will be streamed on the team’s website, cardinals.com, as well as on MLB’s “At Bat” mobile phone app. There is no charge for access to either of those outlets during spring training and the exhibition opener, at 12:05 p.m. Wednesday against Florida Atlantic University, will be presented this way.
Meanwhile, St. Louis’ KMOX (1120 AM) again is the radio network’s flagship station and the first of its 18 broadcasts is set for 12:05 p.m. Thursday, against the Marlins.
While Shannon, Rooney, Horton and Mike Claiborne will rotate as the radio announcers this spring, the online broadcasts will be handled via a mix of Claiborne, Tom Ackerman, Chris Hrabe and Kyle McClellan. Claiborne has been on the radio crew for several years but these added broadcasts will provide the others, all from KMOX, with an opportunity to call big-league baseball — albeit in games that don’t count.
McClellan, a former Cardinals pitcher, will be strictly an analyst for those on-line productions. The others, who are experienced broadcasters, will do both play-by-play and commentary.
