Somerville, Massachusetts mayor Joseph Curtatone has filed suit against Kirk Minihane and Barstool Sports in Massachusetts Superior Court. The full complaint can be found below.
Minihane posed as Boston Globe reporter Kevin Cullen to get through to Curtatone. He then recorded their conversation and posted both video and audio of the exchange on Barstool’s site. In a tweet announcing the lawsuit, Curtatone points out that such action is a “clear violation of Massachusetts General Law” because Minihane obtained consent to record the conversation “through fraudulent means.”
Recording and posting the conversation was Minihane’s response to a radio interview in which the Somerville mayor publicly criticized Barstool president Dave Portnoy for running “a roving band of miscreants” and criticized the Boston Bruins for handing out towels featuring the Barstool logo.
In his full complaint, which can be seen below, Curtatone details some of the past bad behavior attributed to Minihane and Portnoy. Curtatone issued a statement earlier saying that his only goal is “holding Minihane and Barstool accountable for their deceptive and illegal behavior” and that he will “be donating any damages awarded from this suit to the RESPOND women’s shelter in Somerville.”
