Jimbo Fisher is a man that likes to play things close to the vest. He doesn’t want opponents to know too much about Texas A&M before the season begins. During the summer, he did a good job of keeping fans and pundits at bay when asked who would be the Aggies starting quarterback in 2021. That changed on Wednesday morning when Fisher joined John Granato and Lance Zierlein on ESPN 97.5 and 92.5 in Houston.
Granato and Zierlein were broadcasting live from the Texas A&M campus in College Station when Fisher sat down to join them live. Granato asked specifically how Haynes King has looked in practice. That’s when Fisher revealed King, a redshirt freshman, would be the team’s starting quarterback.
“We talked to them yesterday, and right now Haynes will be our starter, and Zach (Calzada) will be the backup right now,” Fisher said.
It doesn’t sound like King separated himself in a huge way in the competition, as the coach noted that he would feel comfortable starting either guy.
“I think both guys can win and play well. I think both guys had an outstanding camp.”
Granato and Zierlein’s show, The Bench, was one of two shows to remain in place for the radio station after a few changes that produced new hosts and shows in middays and afternoons. It’s nice to see the two hosts earn praise from the national and local sports media for getting the answer to a question college football fans and bettors alike have been waiting for.
