“The View’s” Whoopi Goldberg is walking back comments that she made regarding race and the Holocaust.
During a segment, Goldberg said, “the Holocaust isn’t about race.” Her comments were in direct response to a Tennessee school district’s decision to ban Maus; a novel that depicts the horrors of the Holocaust.
Goldberg’s comments were spurred by a discussion about nudity in the book. The show’s co-host Joy Behar replied that the nudity concerns were likely “a canard to throw you off from the fact that they don’t like history that makes white people look bad.”
“If you’re going to do this, then let’s be truthful about it because the Holocaust isn’t about race, it’s about “man’s inhumanity to man” she said.
After the show, Goldberg tweeted a retraction and apology for her earlier statements.
“On today’s show, I said the Holocaust “is not about race but about man’s inhumanity to man.” I should have said it is about both,” she tweeted.
“As Jonathan Greenblatt of the Anti-Defamation League shared, “The Holocaust was about the Nazi’s systematic annihilation of the Jewish people — who they deemed to be an inferior race.” I stand corrected.”
She added: “The Jewish people around the world have always had my support and that will never waiver. I’m sorry for the hurt I have caused.”
