ESPN has just signed one of the most expansive media rights deals that it ever has with a single university. The University of Oklahoma will move its SoonerVision programming to ESPN+ beginning in August.
This eliminates the one game on the Sooners football schedule each year that was a pay-per-view exclusive. That game, along with select men’s and women’s basketball games and studio programming will now live on ESPN+.
“This deal is about access and reach,” Oklahoma AD Joe Castiglione said. “I’m just happy that we’re going to be able to continue to offer more than 1,000 hours annually of live content.”
Last summer, the school announced its intention to join the SEC no later than 2025. That conference already has an expansive rights deal with ESPN that goes into effect in 2023. The new SoonerVision deal should simplify things for fans.
