Baltimore Orioles TV play-by-play voice Kevin Brown appears to have been suspended by team management. The suspension reportedly stems from remarks Brown made at the start of a recent broadcast in Tampa when the Orioles faced the Tampa Bay Rays.
In his July 23rd broadcast open on MASN, Brown discussed the struggles the O’s have had playing at Tropicana Field. The broadcast transitioned to a graphic titled “Trop-ical Depression” which outlined Baltimore’s record in the last 16 series as well as other factoids hammering home Brown’s point.
The comment that seemed to be the particular straw that broke the camel’s back came when Brown echoed what the graphic showed – that Baltimore had beaten the Rays on the road just three times since the COVID-shortened 2020 season.
“The Orioles have won more games against them this season than the last two combined,” Brown said.
Brown then brought in broadcast partner Ben McDonald, where he finished his point that the O’s are playing better against a very good Tampa team that had a white-hot start to the 2023 season.
“It is a stark difference, Ben, and it is not a bad Rays team,” Brown said. “It’s not like all of a sudden the Rays became slouches in the American League East. They’ve led this division every day but now two, and the Orioles are once again back alone in first place.”
Awful Announcing updated its story on Monday night saying the team disputed that Brown was suspended for the remarks.
“A senior Orioles official communicated to us ‘We don’t comment on personnel matters’ and ‘We look forward to hearing Kevin’s voice soon,’” the update read.
But contrary to the team saying Kevin Brown wasn’t suspended, AA reported that other outlets, including The Athletic, have confirmed through sources that he was suspended.
