Last week, it was announced that ESPN and ABC were partnering with WNBA star Brittney Griner for a series of projects focused on telling her story and sharing with the world her experience of being imprisoned in Russia.
On Outkick’s Don’t @ Me, host Dan Dakich admitted there’s a lot you can give ESPN guff for, but in terms of potential 30 for 30 documentaries, the worldwide leader tends to have a recipe for success. So Dakich seemed pretty optimistic any 30 for 30 on Griner’s experience would likely be well-produced.
“I know we’re all supposed to bash ESPN, but I’m not gonna do that,” Dakich said Monday. “I do think ESPN when they’ve put together things like 30 for 30 are pretty good. Now I would assume this is gonna be pretty good.”
Dakich continued by saying that one of the things that has hurt ESPN in recent years is the decline in the production of live sporting events. But if the network sees value in getting Griner’s story out to the masses, he will be interested to see what the finished product looks like.
“I think it’s the same thing with some of these productions, but I will say this, going back in history ESPN has been outstanding in the 30 for 30 realm and telling a story and telling a really interesting and good story,” he said. “I don’t know if Brittney Griner’s an interesting and good story. And I’m sure I’m supposed to bash her. I’m not gonna bash her.
“It’s not her fault that Biden and others decided to trade her for the ‘minister of doom’, the ‘doctor of death’, doctor evil, the world’s most hunted killer (Viktor Bout),” Dakich added.
