It has been nearly eight months since Tucker Carlson departed Fox News, in one of the most high-profile exits in cable news history. After those close to him have remained adamant that the host was fired as part of the Dominion Voting Systems settlement — which both the election machine company and Fox News have continually denied — Carlson has now claimed he doesn’t know why he was let go.
During an interview with SiriusXM host Megyn Kelly, Tucker Carlson shared it doesn’t matter now why he was unceremoniously dumped by the network, as he has his eyes toward the future.
“I sincerely don’t know why they canceled the show. And I would absolutely say so if I did know because I want to be as honest as I can be, but I don’t,” said Carlson. “But you could flip it around if you were speculating. And imagine that maybe being the top show is not a strength, but potentially a weakness. Maybe that’s a problem if you’re saying things that people don’t like.
“And who knows who those people are, but if they’re unpopular and have more power than you do, and you have a big audience, if it’s not the top-rated show, if you’re like languishing at 2 PM on the weekends and you’ve gotten naughty thoughts, they can put up with it. But if you have a much larger audience, then they’re hearing about it a lot. It really is one of those mysteries that I’ll probably never get to the bottom of. And I’ve stopped even thinking about it.”
He continued to note that he had “heterodox” views on many subjects that could have left him vulnerable to being fired, which Kelly agreed with.
“That’s what happens when you make it to the top of cable news primetime,” Kelly shared. “You have a lot of detractors and you have a lot of fans.”
However, Tucker Carlson argued that Kelly is the opposite of those who went behind his back and complained about his content.
“I know you pretty well. If you don’t like somebody, you say things like ‘Hey, I don’t like you.’ You’re pretty straightforward about what you think. There’s freedom in that, and there’s dignity in that. You’re not lying to somebody’s face. And that’s what bothers me on a human level, is if you don’t like what I think, say it to me, but they never will because they’re cowards.”
