Podcast Reach Equal to TV in 18-34 Demo, New Edison Research Study Shows

Edison Research has been studying the habits of audio listeners since 1998. And those who were born around the debut of the Infinite Dial study now spend nearly as much time with podcast audio as TV.

According to figures released by the research company, in the 18-34 demographic, 48% of those surveyed are weekly podcast listeners. 50% watch live and time-shifted TV. Meanwhile, AM/FM radio remains the dominant player, with 77% claiming they are weekly users.

In total, 135 million Americans — which represents 47% of people 12+, are reached by podcasts monthly.

Additionally, female podcast use is on the rise. In the past, there had been a gender gap of monthly listeners, with men seeing usage rates at times 7% higher than female.

However, in the 2024 figures, 48% of Men 18+ listen to on-demand digital audio monthly, while 45% of women in the same demographic responded similarly. That number represents a rise of six percent compared to figures released in 2023 by Edison Research.
