Since 2020, Kate Abdo has been a part of CBS’s soccer coverage of the UEFA Champions League. During her career, she has also done work for FOX on soccer during the Men’s and Women’s World Cup and other big events and for Sky Sports. Now, she will exclusively be doing work for CBS after signing a four-year extension that was revealed during last Saturday’s UEFA Champions League post match coverage.
Abdo was a guest on the Sports Media with Richard Deitsch podcast. She said her views on how soccer should be covered in America aligned with CBS’s plans.
“To be connected to Champions League, I think if you work in soccer for me personally, the one product that I would love to work on would always be Champions League. Knowing that CBS has that contract long-term for another 8 years, it was just always something that I’d hoped for. I hoped our relationship would be long-term. It probably feels more respectful of the way they have invested in me for me to invest solely in them.”
Obviously, Abdo enjoyed being a part of the World Cup coverage for FOX and she said she will miss covering the event. At the same time, she mentioned that there is something unique about covering Champions League matches.
During the Champions League season, Abdo hosts the pre match and post match shows with Thierry Henry, Jamie Carragher, and Micah Richards. She thinks the show works because the four of them understand the value each one brings to the show.
“Lose one of those pieces and the show is much less. I think we all understand and appreciate that about one another,” she said.
Abdo will be in Las Vegas this week as she hosts on-site coverage of the two CONCACAF Nations semifinal matches between Panama-Canada and USA-Mexico Thursday night on CBS Sports Network and Paramount+ with analysts Clint Dempsey, Charlie Davies, Jenny Ruiz, and Maurice Edu.
