Lachlan Murdoch: FOX Corp. ‘Out of the Streaming Arena’

0

Many companies have poured billions into building streaming platforms that have yet to turn a profit. FOX Corp. was never in the group, and Lachlan Murdoch suggested you won’t see it join that fray anytime soon.

While speaking at a conference hosted by Morgan Stanley Monday, Murdoch remained steadfast in his approach that streaming isn’t likely to upset the company’s existing pay-TV business with properties like Fox News and Fox Business Network.

“We’re not going back into the arena. We’re out of the streaming arena, from an entertainment perspective,” Murdoch said, per Deadline. “In the entertainment streaming wars, the arena is like a sea of blood. Everyone’s bled out and we’re happy not to engage in it.”

Murdoch continued by noting the company will continue to embrace its linear roots and emphasize the live news and sports it produces, but added that “we’ve always said we’re distribution agnostic.”

MLS Instructs Broadcasters Not to “Belabor the Point” with Replacement Referees

0

Major League Soccer reportedly sent a memo to television and radio broadcasters over the weekend telling them not to “belabor the point” as it relates to replacement referees being used.

As a lockout continues involving the Professional Soccer Referees Association, the certified labor union representing officials working MLS matches and the MLS along with its referee employment organization, the Professional Referee Organization, the league wants to avoid it becoming a major topic of game broadcasts.

The Athletic received a copy of the memo, which read in part, “Fans tune in to watch and listen to the game. They aren’t focused on the officials; therefore, we don’t believe it is necessary to belabor the point during the match. It is best to mention the situation in the pregame and move on.”

The report says the announcers were also told they could “agree or disagree” with a controversial call, but not imply that the replacement referees were “the reason for the controversial call.”

Sid Rosenberg: Joe Scarborough, Mika Brzezinski, and Jake Tapper Should Be Labeled ‘Domestic Terrorists’

0

77 WABC host Sid Rosenberg has been a fierce defender of Israel since the October 7th terrorist attacks in Gaza. He hasn’t seen the same support from MSNBC or CNN hosts, and that bothers him.

“The media need to go to hell they get covered with all of this. The media is our biggest enemy in this country,” syndicated host Mark Levin said while appearing on Sid and Friends in the Morning Monday.

After criticism of the media from Mark Levin, Rosenberg shared some strong statements.

“I agree. I actually have labeled the media as domestic terrorists,” Sid Rosenberg quipped. “I believe that’s true. I believe Joe (Scarborough), Mika (Brzezinski), and Jake Tapper, and all these people are domestic terrorists.”

Rosenberg went to Israel in January to host his show amid rising tensions in the region. He backed up Levin’s comments about the lack of support for the Jewish state from American media members by stating he never had to even ponder the topic previously.

‘Full Swing’ Season 2 from Netflix Tees Off This Week

0

Season two of the popular Netflix series, ‘Full Swing’ will premier on March 6.

Season 2 follows professional golfers Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas, Dustin Johnson, Rickie Fowler, Tom Kim, Joel Dahmen, Matt Fitzpatrick, Alex Fitzpatrick, Wyndham Clark, Keegan Bradley, and Justin Rose along with Ryder Cup captains Luke Donald and Zach Johnson.

Part of Season 2 will be the drama surrounding the PGA Tour’s fight against LIV Golf, with Rory McIlroy being at the center of it from the PGA side. Several of the golfers featured in Season 1 made the jump to LIV.

“We’ve established this precedent in Season 1 that we have this cast of characters, and it’s not necessarily all going to be from the PGA Tour,” executive producer Chad Mumm told Front Office Sports. “So there really wasn’t a lot of debate about whether or not we would continue with a player like Dustin [Johnson].”

Mumm also told FOS something very surprising for most golf fans to hear about what is to come in Season 2. “We get amazing access at the Masters,” Mumm said. “Augusta National has been incredible to us and to our crews…We are able to get stuff that no one’s ever seen before. There’s a whole tour of the clubhouse with Tom Kim in his episode—those are spaces that haven’t really ever been filmed before.”

Jason DeRusha: No One Ever Wants to Be the Main Character on Social Media

0

Last week, a fellow Minneapolis reporter shared a private email sent to her from WCCO 830 afternoon host Jason DeRusha, which put him in the spotlight. He argued that’s a place no one wants to be.

Liz Collin of Alpha News, a right-wing media outlet in the Twin Cities, shared an email DeRusha sent to her, in which he shared his displeasure for the style of reporting his former co-worker now dabbles in.

“I’m sad this is what and who you’ve become,” DeRusha wrote, who argued he had been nothing but civil and had defended his former colleague.

Collin, who received the email on Saturday, February 17th, didn’t post it until Friday, March 1st. In her post to X, she claimed DeRusha “continues to push lies” about law enforcement officials in the city, namely regarding the murder of George Floyd, and said she “will never spend a second on the George Soros station.”

The tweet from Collin received 435,000 views on X, with DeRusha’s response garnering an additional 235,000 views.

To begin his show on Friday, the Twin Cities host noted he doesn’t blame people for reacting to the interaction, but argued it was a position no one wants to be in.

“Part of having an outsized personality and outsized approach on social media is that you do attract response,” Jason DeRusha said. “I never blame anyone for responding to whatever sliver of social media that the algorithm serves up. It’s not your responsibility as a Twitter user, or Facebook or Instagram or whatever to be like, ‘Oh, well, I better go listen to Jason’s show to know what he really thinks or what he really talks about.’

“But what you don’t want is to become the main character. No one wants to be the main character on social media. And I think a lot of you know what the main character is. It’s the person that becomes sort of the punching bag, if you will. And today, a former colleague of mine put up the bat signal to her followers to come let me have it.”

He continued by sharing his reasoning for discussing the topic, adding that there’s a falsehood peddled by many in the media today about being a victim.

“My email was in response to a back-and-forth on Twitter…I sort of debated about this today. Do I really want to talk about this? Because social media is like its own little universe. For those of you who aren’t engaging in it, it’s like ‘Well, why did why talk about something so small, and petty?’

“But the reason I decided to talk about it is because there is a form of media that trades on rage and trades on playing the role of the victim. And I want to talk about it so you can analyze it as such. I would encourage you to reject it. If you are a Fox News host or an Alpha News reporter, and you have 30,000 followers on X, it’s a load of crap when you act like ‘Man, no one will ever listen to me. Why does the mainstream media ignore me?'”

After Changes to Apple Podcasts Metrics, Some Shows Have Seen Audience Losses of 20%

0

Last year, Apple Podcasts introduced changes to how it counted audience levels for shows hosted on the platform. Some podcasters aren’t thrilled with the changes.

According to a report from Semafor’s Max Tani, This American Life host Ira Glass claims his podcast has experienced a drop of 20% due to the changes.

“I’m in favor of accuracy,” Glass said. “I’m not in favor of losing money.”

In September of last year, Apple began ending automatic downloads for users who had not listened to more than five episodes of a given show in a two-week span. The company gave no warning to podcasters of the change, which angered many in the industry.

This American Life — produced in collaboration with WBEZ, the NPR affiliate in Chicago — previously featured 4.5 million listeners per week, Glass claimed. He shared that the podcast now sees an audience of 3.5 million due to the changes. According to the latest rankings from Podtrac, the show ranks as the 13th most-listened to podcast in the nation.
