MLS Playoffs Seeing Double Digit Viewership Growth Over 2024

0

Major League Soccer’s playoffs are drawing significantly more attention this year, averaging 711,000 global viewers per match across all platforms through last weekend’s conference finals, the league announced. That figure represents a 23% increase from the same stage in 2025.

The total includes global streaming on Apple TV. It also covers select linear broadcasts in the U.S. on Fox and in Canada on TSN and RDS. MLS did not release match-by-match viewership figures. However, Inter Miami’s deep run to the MLS Cup—following a first-round exit in 2024—has likely fueled heightened interest.

“Certainly, having Messi perform really well in the playoffs helps, but this is growth across every one of our matches, all of our rounds,” said MLS Executive Vice President of Media Seth Bacon to Sports Business Journal.

A key change this season has been accessibility. All playoff matches were made available for free on Apple TV, contrasting with last year when viewers needed either a paid Apple TV+ or MLS Season Pass subscription to watch most games. In addition, MLS secured several new distribution partnerships with Comcast, DirecTV, and T-Mobile, expanding the league’s reach.

MLS viewership metrics differ from traditional television measurements. Unlike the Nielsen average minute audience used for most sports telecasts, the league tracks total viewers per match. Nevertheless, Bacon said the 23% increase provides a meaningful indicator of the league’s growth, building on the 29% rise seen during the 2025 regular season.

The league now heads into the MLS Cup final between Inter Miami and the Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. ET. The title match will feature Messi going head-to-head with the Whitecaps’ newly acquired German star Thomas Müller.

The game will stream globally on Apple TV. Live U.S. coverage will air on FOX Sports, with Canadian broadcasts on TSN and RDS.

ESPN To Broadcast First FBS College Football Game From South America Next Season

0

North Carolina State University and the University of Virginia will make history when they meet in the first-ever FBS college football game played in South America on ESPN. The Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) matchup is scheduled for Saturday, August 29, 2026, at Nilton Santos Stadium, also known as Engenhão, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The event, dubbed College Football Brasil, is powered by Athlete Advantage in partnership with Brasil Sports Business and backed by state and city authorities.

“To have NC State and Virginia open our conference schedule on an international stage in Rio de Janeiro speaks to the vision, innovation, and collaboration of our league,” ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips said. “This is an extraordinary moment for the ACC and for college football. We appreciate College Football Brasil for this incredible opportunity to celebrate our student-athletes. Highlighting the global appeal of the ACC, our schools, and the sport of football.”

The game on ESPN marks a significant milestone in American college football’s global expansion. It brings together student-athletes, universities, fans, and communities across two continents.

Athlete Advantage CEO Crowley Sullivan emphasized the significance of the event, which will air live on ESPN. “Rio is the perfect setting for an event of this magnitude. Ggiven its unmatched passion for sport and ability to host world-class competition,” he said.

NC State Athletic Director Boo Corrigan called the opportunity “unforgettable.” “We’re excited about the chance to play in a world-renowned city like Rio de Janeiro and to bring American football to another continent,” he said. Virginia Athletic Director Carla Williams echoed that sentiment, noting the event allows the university to expand its international presence. “We’re honored to participate in such a historic event and thrilled that Brazil will be our host,” she said.

Rio de Janeiro was chosen for its world-class infrastructure. The city also has a history of hosting global sports events. These include the FIFA World Cup, Olympic Games, and Copa America.

The NFL has also recently signed a multi-year agreement to bring additional games to Brazil.

State and city officials praised the event as a chance to strengthen ties with the U.S. tourism market. They also highlighted Rio’s ability to host major international competitions. “Without a doubt, we will further increase Rio’s visibility in the U.S., reinforcing our commitment to positioning the state among the world’s top destinations,” said Rio de Janeiro State Secretary of Tourism Gustavo Tutuca.

Candace Owens: I Have New Information That Confirms Charlie Kirk Was ‘Betrayed by the Leadership of Turning Point USA’

0

Candace Owens has continually released information that she claims shows there was a conspiracy to assassinate Charlie Kirk. She now says she has new information that confirms her suspicions.

In a post on social media, Owens said that she has been given new details that “put the final pieces together for me.”

“I now can say with full confidence that I believe Charlie Kirk was betrayed by the leadership of Turning Point USA and some of the very people who eulogized him on stage,” Owens said.

She continued by stating that she plans to release the information she has uncovered.

“Yes, I will be naming names and providing evidence for my claims,” she continued. “And I am making a personal plea to every well-meaning person who donated to this Godforsaken organization to request a refund. You were lied to. And leadership knew.”

Owens did not expand on whether or not the “betrayal” of Kirk was related to his assassination, the business operations of Turning Point USA, or another facet.

The comments from Candace Owens come after she had previously released text messages — which were later confirmed by Turning Point USA — that showed Kirk’s “real feelings” about Israel, as well as saying that Owens is “bigger than Ben Shapiro” and that “pisses (Shapiro) off.”

Owens has continually asserted that there was a conspiracy to assassinate Charlie Kirk, questioning the official story of the events. Her conspiracy claims come as she has been involved in a lawsuit with French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte, after Owens has continually asserted that the French First Lady was born a male. She recently claimed she was informed that the Macrons had paid $1.5 million for someone to assassinate her.

Craig Carton Reportedly Returning to WFAN in Afternoon Drive

5

Craig Carton is close to returning to one of the most high-profile roles in New York sports radio. The former WFAN host is reportedly finalizing a deal to take over the station’s afternoon drive program beginning next year, according to The Athletic’s Andrew Marchand.

The move would mark Carton’s third stint at WFAN and his second time leading the afternoon slot, a daypart that has long served as one of the station’s signature franchise positions.

His expected return follows months of internal conversations about revamping the lineup. The station hopes to strengthen ratings, boost advertiser demand, and regain momentum in a competitive New York media landscape.

Under the reported changes, Evan Roberts and Tiki Barber would shift to the 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. block. The move would be Roberts’ second major schedule change in two years and would place the duo against ESPN New York’s midday show.

Meanwhile, Carton is reported to have a new partner. FAN overnight host Chris McMonigle has emerged as the leading candidate to join him. According to the reporting, McMonigle’s growing on-air profile, familiarity with WFAN’s core audience and ability to handle high-volume caller segments have been viewed internally as key strengths.

Carton spoke to Barrett Media in September about a possible return to WFAN. Following months of speculation about a possible return following the cancelation of Breakfast Ball on FS1.

“I’m not surprised because I made my name at WFAN. The mornings with Boomer [Esiason], and the two and a half years in afternoons with Evan [Roberts],” said Carton. “I’m not surprised that people who like me and enjoy what I do would immediately ask the question. Well, he left WFAN to go to FOX. If he’s leaving FOX, is there a potential for a return? I’m not surprised those conversations happened amongst people who follow sports media.”

When asked if he would consider a return at the time to WFAN, Carton kept his options open.

“I’m blessed to be a New York radio hall of famer. I know I do it really well, and I enjoy doing it,” said Carton. “If the opportunity arose where WFAN would want to bring me back, I would certainly answer that phone call.”

One of the considerations that Carton said had to be considered in any discussions about a return to WFAN would be the future of his Craig Carton Show podcast. That venture started in September through FOX Sports and Red Seat Ventures. It includes former 97.5 The Fanatic host Tyrone Johnson.

“If my phone rang and somebody says we’re big fans of yours on radio. Are you available? Can we have the conversation? Obviously, I would have the conversation. I would be silly not to,” explained Carton. “So if that opportunity presents itself to do radio and it doesn’t have a negative impact on the podcast I just started, I would certainly have those conversations. If there’s an ability to do both, I would certainly consider it. Today my focus is on doing the best podcast I can for Red Seat and FOX Sports.”

Carton has not responded to correspondence to the report. While the deal is reportedly not yet finalized, the current mid-day team of Brandon Tierney and Sal Licata is expected to be removed from the schedule entirely.

It is unclear whether WFAN plans to reassign either host within the organization or if the move will lead to broader talent changes. Tierney and Licata have hosted the slot since 2022.

WFAN also has not commented on the report.

NFL Redzone Commercial Load Shows Slight Increase Since Beginning of the Season

0

The NFL RedZone Channel featured 16 sponsored elements during Sunday’s Week 13 slate, continuing the network’s measured expansion into integrated commercial inventory while maintaining its signature promise of seven hours of “non-stop football.” According to a Sports Business Journal analysis, subscribers saw a mix of double-box ads, graphic banners and branded segments across the seven-hour broadcast.

RedZone ran eight 15-second double-box ads — a total of two minutes of commercial time — evenly split between the early and late windows. The broadcast wrapped with a separate 30-second double-box ad from DraftKings, the channel’s top sponsor.

While the network has incorporated banner ads in previous seasons, the double-box format is new in 2025 as RedZone looks for ways to increase ad load without breaking its uninterrupted-action ethos.

In addition, RedZone deployed eight graphic banner ads, each appearing for roughly 20 seconds and spread across both windows of the broadcast. Combined with the two minutes of double-box units, the total commercial time remained low compared to traditional live game presentations, but the format continues to draw attention inside the industry as networks explore less intrusive ad models.

Eight brands advertised on RedZone in Week 13: DraftKings, Visa, Allstate, Mercedes-Benz, Wingstop, Lowe’s, Accenture and Progressive. Seven of those sponsors received one double-box ad and one banner ad, with DraftKings receiving an additional 30-second double-box placement to close the show.

The concept was introduced on a trial basis in 2024 on the RedZone feed. The league conducted extensive testing through focus groups and social media monitoring. The result, according to an NFL spokesperson, showed extremely limited negative feedback.

Encouraged by those findings, the league believed it found a balance that allows for increased sponsor visibility while still delivering the uninterrupted action that has made RedZone a must-watch product for fans.

For example during Week 1, RedZone featured four 15-second advertisements throughout the entire show. However, ProFootballTalk reported that the number has since increased, raising questions about whether the balance between sponsor exposure and viewer satisfaction has shifted.

Sponsors have long been a core component of the broadcast. For more than a decade, partnerships have played a role in making the channel possible. League officials emphasized the importance of maintaining strong relationships with advertisers while respecting the unique viewing experience RedZone promises.

Beyond the split-screen and banner formats, Sunday’s telecast also inserted a series of sponsored segments, all airing during the late window. Allstate received a 30-second “Good Hands” feature, while Progressive had a 30-second “Good Coverage” segment. Lowe’s sponsored the 30-second “Earn Your Sunday” highlight package, and DraftKings added a 60-second “Crowning Moments” recap. Mercedes-Benz was featured on the “Drive of the Day,” also running 60 seconds. Accenture sponsored the longest element — a three-minute Top Five Plays of the Day package.

For RedZone, the gradual increase in branded elements reflects a broader trend in the marketplace. Networks face pressure to grow revenue without adding ad breaks that could push viewers to streaming or competing platforms. Advertisers have also become more willing to invest in integrations that keep fans watching during live action, even in double-box or banner formats.

Warner Bros. Discovery Reportedly Receives Mostly-Cash Offer From Netflix

0

Warner Bros. Discovery has entered a crucial stage in its potential sale, receiving a second round of bids that could accelerate the company’s next major move. A source familiar with the process told Reuters the fresh offers arrived over the weekend, including a mostly cash proposal from Netflix, as the studio weighs its strategic options.

Bankers representing Paramount Skydance, Comcast and Netflix worked through the holiday weekend to finalize improved offers for all or portions of Warner Bros. Discovery. The bids are binding, which gives the company’s board room to act quickly if a proposal meets its criteria. However, the offers have not yet reached the “final” stage according to Reuters‘ reporting.

Neither Netflix nor Warner Bros. Discovery offered public comment on the latest round of negotiation activity. Bloomberg first reported the new bids on Monday.

The renewed push comes after Warner Bros. Discovery asked suitors to sharpen their proposals by Dec. 1, responding to a round of preliminary offers submitted in November. Paramount Skydance, Comcast and Netflix have all remained active players in the pursuit, though not every bid has impressed the board.

Reuters previously reported the company rejected a mostly cash offer from Paramount valued at just under $24 per share — a deal that would have placed Warner Bros. Discovery’s valuation at roughly $60 billion. That decision came as the company publicly acknowledged it would explore strategic alternatives, signaling an openness to a sale or structural overhaul.

Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company of HBO and CNN, first indicated in October that it was examining potential paths forward amid a rapidly evolving media landscape. Consolidation has accelerated across the industry, highlighted most recently by the $8.4 billion merger of Skydance Media and Paramount Global.

Meanwhile, Warner Bros. Discovery has tried to reshape its own structure. In June, the studio behind the “Harry Potter” franchise and DC Films announced plans to split into two units next year — one centered on studio operations and another dedicated to cable networks.

The company aims to isolate its growing streaming business from its cable networks, allowing each side to pursue distinct strategies and budgets.

KDWN Host Steve Sanchez Inks Contract Extension

0

Steve Sanchez has grown to be the highest-rated news/talk host in Las Vegas at KDWN. That title has earned him a multi-year contract extension with the Audacy station.

Sanchez — who was with the station when it was acquired by Audacy in a deal that saw it swap stations with Beasley Media Group in the market — has signed a deal that will keep him with the station through 2027.

“I’m excited to continue to be part of a great media brand like Audacy and I’m very excited to go back home to evenings where it all started for me,” said Sanchez. “This move allows me to continue to grow our Gen-X audience while focusing on continued content creation for our fast-growing social media platforms and new stand-alone videocasts.”

The contract extension will keep Steve Sanchez in the 3-6 PM window on the station. He moved to afternoons in February 2023 after the timeslot was previously occupied by the nationally syndicated Mark Levin Show from Westwood One.

In addition to his afternoon show, The Best of The Steve Sanchez Show will continue to be heard on Sunday evenings from 7-10 PM on the Audacy Las Vegas station.

Steve Sanchez has been with KDWN since 2015.

Why Leaving the Radio Business on Your Terms Matters Now More Than Ever

0

Reading the trade press, we see too many reports of our peers who have been told not to return to the building following a discussion with management. I don’t know about their severance packages, but losing a gig is tough, especially when you’re older. I can speak from personal experience, having lost jobs late in radio my career. It’s not fun.

Long ago, I was having dinner with Paul Jacobs, and he offered a telling comment. He talked about people in their 50s who lived the “radio lifestyle,” and when their jobs suddenly disappeared, they hadn’t made any financial preparations. Their situations became precarious.

I could take this column in the direction of asking you to donate to the Broadcasters Foundation of America, a worthy charity that helps our friends in the business who are in need, especially as this column will appear on Giving Tuesday. I’ve made donations every year for nearly twenty years and have included the BFOA in my estate plans. If you can help the BFOA and your fellow broadcasters, please do.

Recently, I spoke to a friend who is considering retiring from radio. One question I threw at him was, “What do you plan to do with your day after you retire?” In my case, I was lucky. Between writing for Barrett Media and now serving as the faculty advisor to WWHR-FM (Revolution 91.7), the student radio station at Western Kentucky University, I’m busy. I’ll spend some of December working on lectures and such for BCOM 360, Programming and Research in Electronic Media, which I will teach at WKU starting in January. Perhaps you want to volunteer with a charity, travel, play a lot of golf, whatever. My advice is to think long and hard about it before you make a move, or your employer makes it for you.

Some of you may not plan to quit. One of my favorite people, and likely one of yours as well, Mike McVay, will probably keep going strong until he’s 100 or so. And at 100, he will still dress better than anyone else in the radio business. He once told me that he doesn’t play golf or do the other retiree things. He does radio, or if he made the comment today, he might say audio.

As an aside, Mike is being introduced to a new generation at Western Kentucky. He was kind enough to cut a short video for Revolution to teach all our newbies how to be an on-air talent, and viewing his piece is a required part of their training. In the business, everyone knows Mike McVay, whether personally or by name. For students, we have to tell them about his connection to Stephen A. Smith. At that point, they’re very impressed that Mike would cut a customized video for us.

Checking my Facebook feed the other day, there was a picture of a sort of “last supper,” actually a dinner with a small group congratulating Vin Ciavatta, one of the funniest people around. “Yo Vin,” as he’s known to many, retired from Nielsen on November 30 after nearly 25 years with the company, going back to the Arbitron days.

The man has been in the radio business his whole career, starting on-air as many of us did. Vinnie McCoy, an air name that might trigger some brain cells in perhaps two or three people in New England, jumped to the sales side mid-career and found a home at Arbitron, survived Nielsen, and finally said “Arrivederci,” most notably on his timeline, not that of a corporate finance department. It was a class act on the part of Rich Tunkel, John Snyder, and Brendan Kane to show up in Providence. Even Brad Kelly made the trip in from the Eastern Shore!

During my time at Arbitron, Vin and I would chat regularly, sometimes about business but typically about minor league hockey, specifically the American Hockey League. I grew up watching the Rochester Americans, known locally as the Amerks, and he was a Providence Reds, now Providence Bruins, fan. My phone would show a 401 area code, and upon answering, I’d hear, “This is Jack Butterfield calling from the American Hockey League office.” For those of you who are not AHL aficionados, Jack Butterfield was AHL president from 1966 until 1994, a fact that is certain to arise in many sports trivia contests.

This wasn’t my typical research or industry issue column, but sometimes it’s valuable to highlight all the good people in the radio business and names that you may not see in the trades. In this case, I wish a wonderful retirement for Yo Vin and his faithful canine companion, Otis, a native of my current “hometown,” Bowling Green, Kentucky. Vin, I hope you have a long and enjoyable retirement, and someday soon, we’ll catch an AHL game together.

Let’s meet again next week.
