Anthony Cumia: We’re Going to Make News Funny and Interesting on New 77 WABC Show

0

77 WABC is set to debut a new program hosted by former Opie & Anthony host Anthony Cumia this weekend. He says it won’t be like other news/talk shows.

During an appearance with the station’s morning host, Sid Rosenberg, Cumia was asked what his show will sound like.

“The state of this planet is comedy,” said Cumia. “It is interesting and compelling. The things that are going on in this world, we can talk about them, make them interesting, make them funny. That’s what you’re going to hear on Sunday. What’s been happening in every aspect entertainment, politics — of course — and with that Anthony Cumia little twist to it.”

The Anthony Cumia Show will debut this Sunday. It will air from 8-10 PM ET each Sunday.

Cumia previously hosted afternoons at WNEW from 1998 to 2002, before Opie & Anthony were fired by Infinity Broadcasting for what the company considered an uncouth promotion. It was one of several times Cumia exited a broadcasting job under similar circumstances. Cumia was fired in 2014 by SiriusXM for sharing racially charged tweets after claiming to be the victim of an attack by a Black woman.

Anthony Cumia had spent a decade with the satellite broadcaster, joining then XM Radio in 2004. Other radio stops include working at WAAF in Boston.

Since his high-profile ouster from SiriusXM, Cumia has hosted a digital show on his subscription-based Compound Media. Since 2021, he has hosted CompoundCensored with VICE Media co-founder Gavin McInnes.

Stephen A. Smith: ‘I’m Happy’ I Will Be at ESPN ‘For Years to Come’

0

Stephen A. Smith has agreed to a five-year contract extension with ESPN that will extend his tenure at the company past two decades. Under the new agreement with the network, Smith will continue working on First Take, where he is currently the featured commentator and executive producer of the show, along with appearing across other ESPN programming. Andrew Marchand of The Athletic reported that the deal is worth a total of at least $100 million and also results in Smith stepping away from the NBA Countdown studio program. Furthermore, he reportedly could appear on the Monday Night Football pregame show or other marquee events.

“Stephen A. works incredibly hard to elevate the sports conversation day-in and day-out and we are grateful he will remain at ESPN,” Jimmy Pitaro, chairman of ESPN, said in a statement. “He is a difference maker, and fans are captivated by his deep sports knowledge, strong opinions and unmistakable flair.”

To open the second hour of the Friday morning edition of First Take on ESPN, Smith spoke about his new deal with the company. Within his remarks, he demonstrated his gratitude towards being able to remain with ESPN and The Walt Disney Company under this five-year deal. Smith is going to continue working on First Take, extending his time on the program to over 15 years amid this contract that keeps him on the network airwaves.

“I got a lot of things that I want to achieve, a lot of things that I want to accomplish in my life that extend beyond this show and beyond the world of sports, but it all starts here,” Smith said. “I’m always happy to be a part of the Worldwide Leader, I’m always proud to be associated with this network, and I’m happy that I’m going to be here for a lengthy period of time for years to come.”

Smith articulated that the deal took too long, a sentiment shared by First Take host Molly Qerim, who explained that she saw his mood swings. In the end though, he was glad the contract was completed and expressed his thanks to all of the contributors on show and various executives within The Walt Disney Company. Smith also took time to thank Qerim, who is approaching 10 years as the host of First Take, before moving on to the next debate.

“You’re my partner in crime,” Smith said to Qerim. “We ride together, and I really, really appreciate all that you’ve meant to the show and all that you’ve meant to me, and I’m really, really happy to be staying on board.”

Smith returned to ESPN in 2012 after a previous four-year stint with the company and has appeared on First Take as a featured commentator since that time. After sitting opposite Skip Bayless for four years, he worked with Max Kellerman and helped the show continue to proliferate in the ratings. When Kellerman departed First Take in September 2021, the show changed formats to welcome a variety of contributors to debate Smith on topics within the sports world. Over the last few years, the program has introduced voices who debate Smith on a weekly basis, including Shannon Sharpe, Christopher “Mad Dog” Russo and Cam Newton.

33% of TV News Audiences Are Watching More Coverage After Election of Donald Trump, New Crowd React Media Shows

0

A common conception after the election of Donald Trump is that TV news consumers are turning away from coverage. New data from Crowd React Media shows the opposite.

In its inaugural State of TV News study, Crowd React Media data shows that 33% of news audiences say they are watching more news coverage than before Election Day 2024. Additionally, 55% of respondents said they are watching the same amount of news.

Only 12% of news consumers are watching less news than previously.

Additionally, the study shows a much more dedicated audience for cable news than streaming television consumers.

31% of those surveyed said they watch eight hours or more of cable television per day. 26% said they watched 4-8 hours per day, meaning 57% watch at least four hours of cable TV each day.

Streaming TV users, however, reported much different habits. 48% of those viewers watched at least 4 hours per day, with those watching eight or more hours and between four and eight hours being evenly distributed at 24%. Younger audiences, those in the 18-34 demographic, were most likely to watch eight or more hours of cable/satellite TV per day at 37%.

94% of linear television audiences say they watch the local news. That outpaces those who utilize streaming platforms, with only 76% of audiences saying they watch local news broadcasts. Of those streaming audiences that watch local news, a whopping 74% said they view the segments on YouTube. Only 59% of respondents said they watch national news content on YouTube.

“All audiences nowadays are effectively digital natives, and local outlets need a strategy to maximize their digital/streaming footprint,” the company said.

The State of TV News study by Crowd React Media, a division of Harker Bos Group, was conducted between December 2024 and January 2025. It included more than 500 television news audiences across the country with a balanced representation of men and women aged 18 and up, with the sample size weighted to U.S. census data.

The NCAA Tournament has always been a mainstay for large gatherings and wagering in the United States. The tournament lasts three weeks and leads to increased viewership across the CBS, TBS, truTV, and TNT platforms. Last year’s men’s championship viewership increased slightly compared to the previous year, as an average of 14.82 million viewers tuned in on TBS and TNT to watch defending champions UConn defeat Purdue 75-60 in another battle of No. 1 seeds.

The women’s title game drew more viewers than the men’s for the first time in history, averaging 18.7 million viewers on ABC and ESPN and peaking at 24 million viewers. The viewership figures for the women’s final made it the most-watched women’s college basketball game on record, as well as the most-watched basketball game, men’s or women’s, since 2019.

VSiN’s announcement states the goal is to help sports fans and bettors navigate this year’s tournament with previews of every matchup and the latest line movements, featuring reports from Las Vegas and contest information.

The network’s program “VSiN Live” will air on SiriusXM’s Mad Dog Sports Radio, broadcasting live from the Wynn Las Vegas and covering the games in progress. The shows will also stream live on the VSiN YouTube channel.

Stephen A. Smith: LeBron James Confronted Me ‘As a Father’

0

Stephen A. Smith was at Crypto.com Arena on Thursday night attending the Los Angeles Lakers matchup against the New York Knicks, sitting courtside alongside various business and media luminaries. Yet a moment during the game went viral online when Lakers superstar forward LeBron James confronted Smith courtside for a reason that remained unknown, and he seemed annoyed with the sports commentator. Smith had spoken about James on numerous occasions throughout the season as it pertains to his son, Bronny, with whom he is teammates on the Lakers. Furthermore, he talked about recent comments James had delivered about NBA coverage and affirmed that there was “weird energy” about being the face of the league.

Smith confirmed that James unexpectedly approached him at the game on Thursday night and said words that are not suited for FCC airwaves. Before addressing the matter to open First Take on Friday morning, he articulated that he thought about this over the last several hours because he had not had any intentions of addressing the interaction. Upon waking up on Friday morning though, he found that everyone from ESPN, his agent and others were sending him a clip of the meeting that had circulated across social media.

“That wasn’t a basketball player confronting me,” Smith said. “That was a parent, that was a father, and I can’t sit here and be angry or feel slighted by LeBron James in any way in that regard.”

Within his discourse, Smith acknowledged that James is a good family man who cares very deeply about his son and that it was clear he took exception to some things he had said about his son. In addition, he shared that James’ agent Rich Paul and business manager Maverick Carter both had his number; however, he did not receive a call from James preceding this incident. If James had wanted to talk to him or seen him in person, he stated that it would have made it happen. Conversely though, James decided to speak with him courtside and express his displeasure towards Smith, who conveyed that he felt he had slighted his son.

Smith provided his perspective by elucidating that he was discussing the position in which James put his son because of certain things he had said leading up to the NBA Draft. One quote from James emphasized that if a team wanted him, it should draft his son because he would do whatever it took to play alongside him for a year. Rather than being more outspoken about it though, Smith conveyed his understanding about being a father and divulged that it was apparent that James was “very, very upset” at the time.

“In the end, like I said, as a father, I get it,” Smith explained. “I’m not offended, I’m not insulted. I don’t have any animosity or animus towards LeBron James for this. Nothing like that. I don’t think he cares, but neither do I. I’m just stating fact – none of that exists. If I was in his position, I can’t definitively said I would not have done the same thing. I’m not blaming him one bit. I get it, I understand it, and there’s a part of me that aches and hurts because of it.”

Smith emphasized that unlike some people who talk about the NBA on podcasts, he covers the league and ultimately has a job to talk about the personnel and subject matter around the sport. There are several storylines going on in the Association, he explained, and added that he has been blessed to have the No. 1 morning show for the last 13 years and counting. In fact, Smith recently agreed to a five-year contract extension to remain on First Take, where he is the featured commentator and executive producer of the program. In the end though, he does not blame James for being angry but conveyed an understanding about his job and the scope of what he previously stated.

“I’m not one of those that get into people’s private affairs, but what you do on a public platform for public consumption, that’s what I cover, that’s what I do for a living, and if you’re in the NBA, that applies to you,” Smith said. “I don’t want enemies – I live a very good life. I like to make people laugh and smile and have a good time and all of that other stuff, but I also get paid to call it like I see it, and what I said at the time, I stand by what I said.”

Minnesota Station Owner David Linder Presumed Dead In Skiing Accident

0

Minnesota station owner David Linder is presumed dead in an Alaskan avalanche during a backcountry heli-skiing trip. The 39-year-old was on a ski trip with three other skiers when the avalanche struck about 40 miles south of Anchorage.

Heli-skiing is when skiers board a helicopter, travel into the backcountry to an inaccessible peak, and ski down to the bottom, where they are picked up again by the helicopter.

The avalanche happened Tuesday afternoon, leaving Linder and the others buried under 40 to 100 feet of snow.

John Linder founded Linder Radio Group and owns 21 stations in Minnesota. When Linder Sr. died in 2017, the company passed to his son, David. In 2019, Linder added partners Lynn and Matt Ketelsen.

Linder’s business partner wrote David Legault on Facebook, “Tough day. You never think about losing a friend and business partner. He was the smartest guy I knew. He helped with critical thinking situations and presented me with a new perspective every time… something I’ll be missing. Of course, if you know Dave Linder, you know every time we got together it ended up turning into an adventure. Great memories! I pray for your family and am thankful I got to know you.”

Linder, who was now living in Florida, is survived by his wife and three sons.

The other skiers are identified as Jeremy Leif of Minnesota and Charles Eppard of Montana.

Jermaine Wiggins: The ‘ManningCast’ Should ‘At Least Have the Hosts in the Same Room’

0

Throughout the Boston Bruins season, NESN has been airing the Unobstructed Views broadcast alongside select regular-season games. The alternate presentation features three former Bruins players in Andrew Raycroft, Patrice Bergeron and Tuukka Rask viewing the game together in the studio and providing their reactions in real time. The trio was on the air on Thursday night as the Bruins faced the Carolina Hurricanes, a regular-season matchup that ended in a 3-2 loss after Seth Jarvis scored a game-winning goal with 18.6 seconds remaining. Jermaine Wiggins was watching the contest, along with the Boston Celtics game against the Philadelphia 76ers, and revealed that he was tuned into the alternate broadcast.

During the Friday morning edition of The Greg Hill Show on WEEI, Wiggins averred that he needed to give the team at Unobstructed Views credit, affirming that they were skilled in the craft. Wiggins recalled that the show welcomed former NHL center and current broadcast analyst Brian Boyle to the show and insinuated the strong chemistry between the cast. From there, he proceeded to talk about the program in relation to the Monday Night Football with Peyton and Eli presentation, which recently averaged 1 million viewers per game in its third season.

“It is really an interesting thing to watch, and I enjoy the ManningCast because I used to love to listen to Bill [Belichick] and his insight on the game, and watching those type of broadcasts where you can actually hear players breaking down certain things as they happen in the game, in my opinion, I like better than just the standard play-by-play and color commentary guy,” Wiggins said.

“But they’re all in the same room, and I wish that the Mannings would take a page out of that book and at least have the hosts in the same room – the two brothers – and then you could always Zoom in whoever the special guest is if you can’t be in a location where the guest can kind of come.”

Courtney Cox, the co-host of the morning program, added that Unobstructed Views utilizes a two-shot with Rask and Bergeron situated on a couch while Raycroft is alone in another box. Yet the former Bruins are all in the same room, and she conveyed that it just feels like three friends who are all watching the game. Wiggins shared that they were stunned surrounding the goal in the waning seconds of the third period, which took place less than a minute after the Hurricanes lost a potential game-winning tally due to an offsides call.

“If you haven’t got a chance to do it, I think the next game that they’re going to be doing – they talked about afterwards – is St. Patty’s Day,” Wiggins concluded, “so give it a little check, a follow and watch, and like I said, hopefully we can send it to the Mannings so they can learn how to do the ManningCast better this season.”

NESN aired the latest edition of the broadcast on the same day as reported editorial cuts said to be part of a series of layoffs at the company. A spokesperson for the company told Chad Finn of The Boston Globe that the layoffs encompassed “part of an overall assessment and strategic pivot to a different model.”
