Kevin Durant: ‘Fans and Media Have as Much Impact’ on State of Basketball Today as Anybody

0

The NBA All-Star Weekend faced heavy criticism from players, fans, and media in the days following the event. Complaints centered around the new format, frequent stoppages, musical performances, and more. Viewership also declined, with the NBA All-Star Game averaging 4.72 million viewers across TNT, TBS, and truTV—a 13% drop from last year’s 5.398 million.

On the latest episode of The Draymond Green Show with Baron Davis podcast, Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green and co-host Baron Davis were joined by NBA superstar Kevin Durant. Green, a key figure in TNT Sports’ coverage of All-Star Weekend, was outspoken in his criticism of All-Star weekend, rating the new format a zero out of ten and arguing that the game “wasn’t real basketball.”

While discussing the event with Durant, Green suggested that “fans and media have as much impact on the state of the game today as anybody.” Durant responded by saying media and fans are the “underrated part” sharing his thoughts on how fans react differently when things are going well versus when they aren’t.

“It’s kind of taboo to talk about the fans or criticize them,” Durant explained.

A highly engaged athlete on social media, Durant often challenges narratives and interacts with both fans and media. He expressed frustration with the way some fans claim credit for the NBA’s success yet distance themselves when issues arise.

“We pay our hard-earned money and we basically fund your whole operation, so y’all can’t say s*t about us,” said Durant about how some fans on social media take credit for the NBA’s success. “You know what? Y’all have a huge impact on what we do, right? So how can y’all not be a factor to our s**t when it’s going bad? When s**t going bad, it’s all on the people inside the league. But when s**t going well, the fans want to take credit for how much they come to the games. How much they watch all this s**t. But when it’s going bad, it’s like, ‘I’m out of it as a fan base, it’s the players and the league itself.’ Nah, you’re not going to get away with that.”

Durant went on to criticize those who complain about the NBA and All-Star Weekend without offering solutions. He urged them to contribute ideas for improvement rather than just finding faults.

“If you don’t have a solution, just sit back and enjoy the game because you’re taking these amazing athletes for granted,” Durant said. “There are too many threes. The game starts too late. There are too many commercials. Players switch teams too much. No more rivalries. No more fights. Damn, what do you want? I’m getting sick of it.”

Clay Travis: Rachel Maddow Completely Misguided on Why MSNBC Axed Joy Reid

0

MSNBC parted ways with Joy Reid earlier this week. Rachel Maddow believes it is partially motivated by race, but Clay Travis disagrees.

During his digital video program with the outlet he founded, OutKick, Clay Travis argued that Maddow has misplaced her anger and frustration over Reid’s departure from MSNBC.

“If Rachel Maddow thinks MSNBC is racist, she can resign and insist that a minority be hired to replace her,” Travis said. “She makes $25 million a year. She can go to her bosses at MSNBC and say, ‘Hey, I’ll take $5 million a year. I want you to give my other $20 million in salary to minority employees that I don’t think are respected enough by the bosses here.’ Have I missed that? Has Rachel Maddow offered to pay Joy Reid any of her salary? Has she offered to give up her job so that a more deserving minority newscaster could have her television salary and her television spot? I must be missing that.”

He then shared his belief that Reid lost her show with MSNBC due to ratings, which is the name of the game in the media world.

“The reason why Joy Reid got fired is not because she’s a moron and it’s not because her takes against Trump are awful, ill-advised, unintelligent, and lacking in any substance. It’s because nobody watched,” continued Travis. “She could have had the same awful show, and if she had the audience that Laura Ingraham did, not only would she have kept her show, she would have gotten a raise.

“It’s easy to kick and scream and blame others for why you failed. It’s easy to cry — as Joy Reid did — at the cancelation of her show. And it’s easy for Rachel Maddow to sit back and say this is about racism. But the reality is, this is about viewership. Joy Reid is in the business of drawing viewers and nobody watched her show. When nobody watches your show, or when nobody listens to your show, you’re eventually going to get fired. That’s the hard truth, whether you’re doing local radio, like I did back in the day in Nashville, or whether you’re doing a national television show. Ratings, ratings, ratings. It is the scoreboard. It is the entirety of the business.”

Travis concluded by stating that he believes Reid’s run in the spotlight is likely over.

“Rachel Maddow said it’s racism. It’s just Joy Reid doesn’t have much of an audience at all, and it’s continuing to decline instead of growing. I think her career is basically over. She got an opportunity for five years to convince Americans that they should be watching her, and she failed, and now she’s out on her ass. That’s life in media.”

Gavin Newsom to Launch New Podcast with iHeartMedia

0

iHeartMedia has announced a new podcast hosted by Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) that claims to feature conversations with those on the opposite side of the political aisle.

This is Gavin Newsom released a teaser trailer on Wednesday, showcasing the California governor stating that he’s looking forward to the new series that he claims will buck the traditional political podcast trends.

“We need to change the conversation,” said Newsom. “That’s why I’m launching a new podcast. This is going to be anything but the ordinary ‘politician’ podcast. I’m going to be talking to people directly that I disagree with, as well as people I look up to. But more important than anything else, I’ll be talking directly with you, the listener. Real conversations … There’s an onslaught of information we take in, so let’s take it to the sources without the typical political mumbo jumbo.”

Newsom promised several of the first episodes of the podcast would include conversations “with some of the biggest leaders and architects in the MAGA movement.”

The newly announced podcast comes after Newsom had previously announced a podcast with iHeartMedia that included former NFL star Marshawn Lynch. That project, however, never came to fruition.

It is not the first foray into the podcast space with a current political leader for iHeartMedia. The company has featured the Verdict with Ted Cruz podcast — hosted by the Republican Senator — since 2022.

Gavin Newsom was elected to Governor of California in 2018 after previously serving as Lieutenant Governor of the state, in addition to his time as Mayor of San Francisco. He is currently serving his second term as Governor, which will end in 2026. He has been widely regarded as one of the potential frontrunners for the 2028 Democratic Party ticket for President.

Detroit Tigers Games Cut Pre, Post-Game Programs on West Coast Trips

0

The Detroit Tigers and FanDuel Sports Network Detroit announced their television broadcast plans for the 2025 season on Wednesday. Play-by-play announcer Jason Benetti will return as the lead voice for the Tigers, entering his second season with the club after previously calling games for the Chicago White Sox from 2016 to 2023.

Joining Benetti in the booth will be a rotation of game analysts, including former Tigers pitcher Dan Petry, along with Kirk Gibson, Todd Jones, and Carlos Peña. However, the team did not provide specific details on how the rotation will align with the upcoming schedule. All games will continue to be broadcast on FanDuel Sports Network Detroit.

One notable change for the upcoming season involves the team’s pre-game and post-game shows when the Tigers are on the West Coast. On certain dates, the usual 30-minute pre-game and post-game coverage may not be aired. While FanDuel Sports Network Tigers reporter Daniella Bruce is expected to host these shows, the team and network have yet to make an official announcement.

Whoever is named the host will replace sportscaster John Keating, who announced his retirement in January. Keating will continue working with FanDuel Sports Network through the remainder of the Detroit Red Wings season.

Additionally, Tigers radio play-by-play voice Dan Dickerson will move to television on days when Benetti is covering national college football assignments.

The Tigers reached an agreement in November to remain on FanDuel Sports Network Detroit through the 2025 season. As part of the deal, the team accepted a significant reduction in their rights fee, reportedly taking as much as a $25 million cut. FanDuel Sports Network Detroit now offers its own streaming platform for fans in the city, along with a new partnership through Amazon Prime. Subscriptions to access all Detroit sports games are currently priced at $19.99 per month.

YouTube Podcasts Eclipses 1 Billion Monthly Active Users

0

YouTube has worked diligently to become a player in the podcast space. The company has seen that come to fruition as more than 1 billion users utilize the service for podcasts each month.

As of January 2025, the company has reached 1 billion monthly active viewers of podcast content. Additionally, more than 400 million hours of podcast content were seen on living room devices monthly in 2024.

“This milestone underscores how YouTube has come to play an essential role in podcasting for creators and audiences, and how our investments to improve the podcast experience on YouTube are paying off,” Vice President of Partnerships and Podcasts Tim Katz said.

In the latest Nielsen metrics, YouTube commanded 10.8% of all television viewing in January. That figure has fluctuated between 8.5% (December 2023) and 11.1% (December 2024) since the Media Distributor Gauge was first unveiled in November 2023. Only The Walt Disney Company — which encompasses the ABC and ESPN family of linear television networks, as well as streaming platforms like Hulu, Disney+, and ESPN+ — routinely finishes ahead of YouTube in the overall television viewership rankings.

The news that the digital video platform has surpassed more than 1 billion active monthly podcast users comes on the heels of data released by the company that says, on average, viewers are watching more than 1 billion hours of YouTube content on TVs daily.

Additionally, 2025 marks the 20th anniversary of the company now owned by Google.

‘ESPN Daily’ Podcast Comes to an End

0

Clinton Yates confirmed on social media earlier this month that the ESPN Daily podcast has come to an end, replying to a user who was asking about the future of the program. Yates answered that the show was no longer taking place and added that he appreciated all of the support. In a subsequent reply, Yates concurred that it hurt not to have the show going forward and cited decisions being made that were above his paygrade. Barrett Media has reached out to ESPN for comment on the development.

The news flew under the radar for several weeks until it was recently spotted by Austin Karp of Sports Business Journal, although the show still remains listed on the ESPN podcast page online. The last episode of the show was posted just after Super Bowl LIX on Wednesday, Feb. 12, and it examined the growth of women’s college basketball in Los Angeles, Calif. The show ended with a message from Yates expressing that he would talk to the audience tomorrow, aligning with the structure of how other episodes concluded.

The ESPN Daily podcast first began in 2019 with Mina Kimes hosting weekday episodes that would address specific news stories or features and include ESPN personnel as guests. Kimes eventually started taking part in more ESPN NFL coverage, resulting in Pablo Torre becoming the host of the program in the summer of 2020.

After Torre joined Meadowlark Media to contribute on The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz and launch his own digital program, Pablo Torre Finds Out, a rotation of hosts were at the helm until last March when Clinton Yates was named to the full-time role. Yates recently joined the weekday ESPN Radio lineup as the host of Clinton & Friends, taking over the late-morning timeslot previously held by Mike Greenberg.

ESPN Signs Laura Rutledge To Multi-Year Extension

0

ESPN has announced a new multi-year contract with NFL Live and SEC Nation host Laura Rutledge. The 36-year-old broadcaster, who joined ESPN in 2014, has held various roles at the network. Under the new agreement, she will continue hosting NFL Live and contributing to coverage of NFL and college football games.

“Laura is a consummate professional and wonderful teammate,” said Burke Magnus, ESPN President of Content. “Her versatility allows us to utilize her in multiple roles across numerous sports throughout the year. We are fortunate to have her.”

Beyond her football responsibilities, Rutledge will also take part in major events such as the NFL Draft, the Masters Tournament, and SEC Kickoff.

“ESPN has given me the support and freedom to build my dream career since I arrived eager to learn and grow,” Rutledge said in a statement. “I appreciate the company’s continued faith in me and hope they know how grateful and proud I am to work here. On a personal level, so many colleagues have become mentors and dear friends. My NFL Live team, especially, feels like family.”

NFL Live has thrived under Rutledge’s leadership over the past five years. She hosts alongside analysts Ryan Clark, Mina Kimes, Dan Orlovsky, and Marcus Spears. The show earned Sports Emmy nominations in 2023 and 2024.

Rutledge made her ESPN NFL debut in 2018 and is a key part of the Monday Night Football broadcast team. As a sideline reporter, she joins the crew on select weeks during the regular season and contributes to ESPN’s Wild Card and Divisional playoff coverage.

A University of Florida graduate, Rutledge holds a degree in broadcast journalism. She received the 2011 Red Barber Award for Excellence in Broadcasting. Before joining ESPN, she worked as a sports anchor for CNN’s New Day and Early Start. She also contributed to HLN’s Morning Express with Robin Meade and worked at Fox Sports.

Colin Cowherd: ‘I’ve Stopped Bringing on Certain NBA Reporters Who Are Good People, But It’s All Fluff’

0

The NBA is preparing to commence new 11-year media rights deals with The Walt Disney Company, Comcast Corporation and Amazon reportedly worth a collective $77 billion. Even though Warner Bros. Discovery is now in its final season with U.S. live game broadcast rights for the NBA, it will be sublicensing its award-winning studio program, Inside the NBA, to Disney to air on ESPN and ABC throughout the season. The cast of Ernie Johnson, Charles Barkley, Kenny “The Jet” Smith and Shaquille O’Neal frequently receive plaudits for their rapport and chemistry on the airwaves, along with their willingness to hold people accountable.

Colin Cowherd recently extolled Barkley and O’Neal for this and contextualized them as an anomaly to the media members throughout the rest of the league. Whereas he believes that media tasked with covering the NFL is tough and does not hesitate to criticize players or coaches, he articulated that basketball media at the college and professional level is soft and tries to “curry favor” with star players. As a result, Cowherd conveyed that this has resulted in a dearth of media willing to be critical towards the audience, prompting him to make adjustments on The Herd.

“I’ve stopped bringing on certain NBA reporters who are good people, but it’s all fluff,” Cowherd said. “‘Everybody’s great.’ Well, let’s address load management.”

Cowherd added that baseball has a similar problem with the fourth estate, but he specifically pointed out FOX Sports reporter Tom Verducci as someone who goes against this ostensible current. For example, Cowherd referenced how Verducci was the first person to illuminate the presence of steroids around the sport, along with the protracted length of games and how contests needed to be shortened. Both of these observations led to changes to preserve the purity of the sport while also evolving for the next generation of consumers.

“It takes sometimes a strong opinion from a very notable person to push back on a sport, and I think Barkley and Shaq are the guys that are like, ‘Why aren’t you playing? Why are you resting?,’” Cowherd said. “I want a show that is hard and has teeth and bites into the players. They’re not P.R. firms. My job isn’t to be a P.R. guy.”

Despite Cowherd acknowledging that it can be argued that there are moments when Barkley is too critical; however, he contended that the product is better than what is offered on other television networks. In fact, he argued that some of the coverage on ESPN is “mostly fluff” and can lean towards conveying positive sentiments towards the players. Cowherd clarified that he was not talking about everybody on the network, but he also stated how it can feel like the broadcasts sometimes emit a feel as if they are owned by teams themselves.

“It’s like, ‘Guys, it’s okay to criticize players,’” Cowherd said. “I think Barkley and Shaq provide – they’re the outlier; they’re the dogs on TV that criticize.”
