Otto Padron Steps Down As Meruelo Media President/CEO

0

Meruelo Media President And CEO Otto Padron has resigned, effective at the end of February. Before joining Meruelo Media, Padron was SVP for Univision Television Network.

Tomas Trujillo, current SVP of Finance and Operations, will fill the role.

In a memo obtained and first published by Radio Ink, Madron wrote:

My Meruelo Media Village,

It is with a heart full of mixed emotions, I share my decision to turn the page and step down as President and CEO of Meruelo Media at the end of this month. I will pass the company torch to Tomas, whom I am confident will continue to light the way with the same bright intensity and passion he has always displayed.

Almost 14 years ago, we set out to make our organization the premier minority-owned media company in the US. I’m proud to have dedicated my name, soul, skill, and reputation to turn that vision into reality. Through hard work, trust, and accountability, we grew every aspect of our organization, reshaping our beloved village, pivoting purposefully, and creating a long-term strategic plan for success. Our well-crafted path, executed with precision in one of the most competitive media markets in the US, transformed our single-station operation into a dynamic cluster of iconic TV and Radio brands.  We became California’s largest and fastest-growing minority-owned and veteran-operated media company. From KWHY-TV to KDAY, from POWER to KLOS to CALI-FM and so much more in between, it’s been a career-defining journey. This organization is stronger today than it was when I took over, and I am humbled to have been the catalyst of our team.  Be proud of what you’ve done!

My next chapter brings with it excitement and new challenges. As many of you know, I’ve been working on launching a Media Strategies company called ACTIFY. This new venture will allow me to stay connected with many of you while exploring innovative projects in the media space I’m so passionate about.

I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to our incredible team and talented on-air crews for making our company feel like a home. My sincere gratitude to Alex and Luis for their unwavering support as I step into this new phase of my career.

I wish you all health, success, and endless blue skies on your continued Meruelo journey!  If you see me in the halls or studios in the coming days, let’s take a moment to celebrate the great village we’ve built together!

Cheers to the future, and to new horizons!

Richmond’s ESPN 106.1 ‘Big Al’ Coleman to Retire on February 26

0

Allen Coleman, better known as “Big Al,” has announced that he will retire from his two-hour morning show on Richmond’s ESPN 106.1 on Wednesday, February 26. Coleman, speaking with The Richmonder, stated that he informed station management of his decision months ago after over 33 years of broadcasting.

“It’s time for me to move on… plain and simple,” Coleman told Jerry Lindquist of the local online publication. “Why? Because I want to retire. I’ll be 70 in March. It’s time to let the young guys take over.”

Coleman has been a longtime voice for the Richmond sports fan. He originally began his career in January of 1992 as a stockbroker who brokered his own time on WRNL, eventually growing his program to air five mornings a week within the first 13 months of its existence.

Over time, he spent additional years at the former ESPN 950 in Richmond before joining ESPN 106.1 in 2018, where he served not only as a weekday host but also as a salesman.

The sports radio veteran mentioned that his interest in sports has started to “wane a little bit” in recent years. He explained that the sports landscape is very different today compared to when he first began his broadcasting career.

“It’s all about the money now,” Coleman said. “College football and basketball are off the rails. They have more freedom to come and go… piggly wiggly, willy nilly… than pro players do. My interest in college football was actually growing. Now, players and teams are being bought. People come and go. How do you follow a team when it’s ‘here today, gone tomorrow?’”

As for Coleman’s plans moving forward, he revealed that a podcast is in the works to stay connected with his longtime sports radio following.

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro to Join Pitt-Syracuse Basketball Broadcast on 93.7 The Fan

0

The radio play-by-play broadcast of tonight’s Pitt-Syracuse men’s basketball game will feature a special guest commentator: Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro. The broadcast, airing live on Audacy’s 93.7 The Fan, will have Gov. Shapiro joining longtime announcer Bill Hillgrove and analyst Curtis Aiken, who is in his 15th season as the radio analyst for Pitt men’s basketball.

As first reported by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Shapiro and Aiken share a longstanding connection. Aiken previously served on Shapiro’s administration transition leadership board in November 2022 when the Governor succeeded Tom Wolf in office. A few months later, in January 2023, Shapiro appointed Aiken to the Board of Trustees for the University of Pittsburgh, further strengthening their professional ties.

Governor Shapiro’s political career in Pennsylvania began in 2016 when he was elected Attorney General. He was re-elected in 2020 before successfully running for Governor in 2022. Now 51, Shapiro was once a team captain for Akiba Hebrew Academy’s basketball team in Merion Station, Pa. He later graduated from the University of Rochester with a degree in political science and earned his juris doctorate from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.

Although Shapiro does not have a direct academic connection to the University of Pittsburgh, his daughter, Sophia, graduated from the university in April 2024.

Beyond state politics, Governor Shapiro was a top contender to be former Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate in the most recent election. While he was not selected—Governor Tim Walz ultimately secured the nomination—Shapiro played a key role as a top surrogate for Harris throughout her campaign.

Tonight’s game tips off at 7 p.m. and can be heard locally on 93.7 The Fan or watched live on the ACC Network.

Jon Jansen: ‘Don’t Know’ if NFL Wants Sunday Afternoon Games on Netflix

0

A seminal change to the sports media ecosystem could be taking place with the potential immersion of Netflix into the weekly NFL broadcasting rotation when the league is able to opt out of its existing media rights deals. Netflix chief content officer Bela Bajaria recently stated that she would definitely be interested in a Sunday afternoon package of games should the company decide to move in that direction. The news led Mike Stone and Jon Jansen to discuss the viability of the streaming service becoming a destination for the games on the Tuesday edition of Costa & Jansen with Heather on 97.1 The Ticket in Detroit.

Stone explained that people know they have been “blessed” to be able to watch most professional football games free of charge.

“I don’t know that the NFL wants to go down that road of taking the most popular sport in America right now, the one that gets the most eyeballs, and taking it off of over-the-air broadcast to put it on a major part of their Sunday broadcast on streaming services,” Jansen said. Netflix recently completed the first year of a three-season deal to broadcast NFL games on Christmas Day, presenting a doubleheader that averaged more than 30 million viewers.

With the plausibility of the NFL re-engaging media companies in negotiations upon its expected opt out of the existing 11-year media rights contract reportedly worth $111 billion, there seems to be a chance that Netflix could become a new weekly destination for football fans to view the games. CBS and FOX have both been carrying Sunday afternoon games since the 1998 season, which have been free, over-the-air products.

“I don’t know if they want to, but there’s a lot of things that the NFL didn’t want to that they’ve done,” Stone countered. “They never wanted private equity firms to actually own percentages of their teams – that’s changed. Everything in the National Football League, like many other businesses in this world as we know, all they care about is how much money they can make.”

Stone assumed that the price of a Netflix subscription would be raised if the entity landed Sunday afternoon NFL rights because of the remuneration that would be paid to the league. Netflix currently has more than 300 million paid memberships for its service and forecasted a content spend of approximately $18 billion for the year. Outside of NFL games on Christmas Day, Netflix also broadcasts weekly editions of WWE Raw and recently garnered U.S. broadcasting rights for the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2027 and 2031.

“It’ll be interesting to see how does this impact Sunday Ticket, because if it’s on Sunday Ticket, which is with YouTube TV right now and streaming, if another streaming service offers those games, will they still be available on Sunday Ticket?,” Jansen asked. “Just a question – I don’t know what the answer to that is.”

“Well, the answer is if the NFL can make more money doing it that way, that’s going to be the answer,” Stone replied. “How can they make more money? That’s all it seems – I’m a little hyperbole here – that’s all they care about.”

Jansen also questioned if the popularity of the game played a factor into how much money the NFL would make aside from the broadcast fees. The league reportedly receives $2.25 billion per year from FOX and $2.1 billion per season from CBS as parts of rights packages that include Sunday afternoon games, playoff contests and two Super Bowl broadcasts each. FOX averaged 18.4 million viewers for regular-season NFL broadcasts, down 3% from the previous year, while CBS experienced a 1% year-over-year decline with an average of 19.2 million viewers watching the contests.

0

Dave Ramsey has written several bestselling books. A release date for his next project has been released.

Build a Business You Love” from Ramsey is set to publish on Tuesday, April 15th. The date is a symbolic one, as it marks the final day Americans can submit their federal income tax returns to the IRS.

The book will share Ramsey’s philosophy on the five stages of business and how small business owners readers can create lasting projects they enjoy.

SNY Launches Direct-to-Consumer Service in Partnership with MLB

0

SportsNet New York (SNY), the regional sports network that serves as the television home of New York Mets baseball, is launching a direct-to-consumer streaming service in partnership with MLB. The new platform officially debuted on Tuesday through the MLB App, allowing fans to take part in an enhanced viewing experience featuring live game broadcasts, highlights, statistics, replays and more. This offering does not include games that are broadcast on national networks, nor the regional games that are allocated to WPIX-TV.

“We are thrilled to partner with Major League Baseball in making SNY more broadly available to sports fans in the tri-state area,” Steve Raab, president of SNY, said in a statement. “2025 marks SNY’s 20th season and this enhanced streaming product reflects our continued commitment to providing sports fans with the flexibility to watch SNY wherever and however they choose.”

This new platform is available for purchase at $24.99 a month or $124.99 for the entirety of the MLB season. Furthermore, consumers can subscribe to SNY in this capacity for $149.99 per year through the league application. Mets broadcasts are expected to feature play-by-play announcer Gary Cohen with analysts Keith Hernandez and Ron Darling as the award-winning booth begins their 20th season together on the call.

Users are also able to bundle SNY with MLB.TV for $44.99 per month or $219.99 for the MLB season as a whole. The MLB App can be accessed from a variety of digital touchpoints, including iOS, Android, Amazon Fire TV, Roku, Apple TV, Google TV and on Samsung connected television devices. Authenticated pay television subscribers will be able to access the stream at no extra charge through the MLB App starting next month. As a result of this new streaming functionality, the SNY App is going to be discontinued at the end of March.

“MLB has worked extensively with numerous parties in the sports media space to help expand the reach of MLB games and eliminate local blackouts where we can,” Kenny Gersh, executive vice president of media and business development for MLB, said in a statement. “With the high quality production and elite broadcasting talent that SNY offers along with the excitement surrounding the 2025 Mets, we are looking forward to offering Mets fans in the tri-state area this new option to enjoy watching their favorite Club.”

SNY becomes the latest regional sports network to become available direct to consumer as companies look to combat altered revenue streams and eliminate blackouts. More than two-thirds of the league is currently available to view without a traditional cable television bundle, but SNY becomes the first RSN to offer the service with the league through its app. Other RSNs in the New York metropolitan area offer DTC subscriptions, including MSG Networks and YES Network through the Gotham Advanced Media and Entertainment joint venture.

FOX Sports to air 2025 MLB Tokyo Series in March Between Dodgers and Cubs

0

The MLB season officially kicks off in just a month on FOX Sports as the Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago Cubs open the 2025 season with a short two-game series overseas in Tokyo, Japan. Earlier today, the network announced via social media that both games will be broadcast, with game one airing on FOX Sports and FOX Deportes on Tuesday, March 18, followed by game two on FS1 and FOX Deportes on March 19.

Both telecasts will air live from the Tokyo Dome at 6 a.m. Eastern time in the United States. Additionally, fans can watch the games on the teams’ regional sports networks, with Marquee Sports Network covering Chicago and Spectrum SportsNet LA handling the Los Angeles broadcast.

This series also marks a homecoming for several native Japanese players. The Dodgers will showcase Oshu, Shohei Ohtani and Bizen, and Yoshinobu Yamamoto, while the Cubs will feature Kitakyushu, Shota Imanaga, Arakawa, and Seiya Suzuki.

MLB’s tradition of opening its season in Japan dates back to 2000, when the New York Mets and Chicago Cubs played the first-ever regular-season games outside of North America. Since then, Tokyo has hosted four more season openers, most recently in 2019 when the Seattle Mariners faced the Oakland Athletics in Ichiro Suzuki’s final two MLB games.

Leading up to the highly anticipated series, both teams will participate in exhibition games against some of Japan’s top baseball franchises. On March 15, the Chicago Cubs will take on the Hanshin Tigers, while the Yomiuri Giants will face the Los Angeles Dodgers. The following day the teams will swamp opponents in preparation for the Dodgers and Cubs to gear up for the official start of the 2025 MLB season.

FOX Sports will announce the full 2025 MLB on FOX broadcast schedule at a later date.

The CW Network Earns Record-Viewership For NASCAR Xfinity Series Opener

0

The CW Network delivered a record-breaking racing weekend with its coverage of the 2025 NASCAR Xfinity Series season opener at Daytona, drawing 1.8 million viewers, according to Nielsen fast national ratings. In a thrilling overtime finish on Saturday night, driver Jesse Love became the second-youngest winner in NASCAR Xfinity Series history at Daytona. Love led 30 of the 126 laps run including the final 18 laps leading to his second career series victory.

Saturday night’s broadcast on The CW was the most-watched NASCAR Xfinity Series race across any track or network since April 2022 at Talladega Motor Speedway. Viewership peaked at 2.2 million during the 7:30 p.m. quarter-hour as the race reached its dramatic conclusion. Compared to last year’s weather-impacted Daytona opener, total viewership increased by 93%, with double-digit percentage gains across key demographics.

This marks The CW’s first year airing the entire NASCAR Xfinity Series after its official announcement last April. The network announced then it would carry the final eight races of the 2024 season. Now the exclusive home of the NASCAR Xfinity Series through 2031, The CW will broadcast 33 live races annually, along with practice and qualifying events each weekend.

For the first time in series history, every NASCAR Xfinity Series race will be available on free, over-the-air broadcast television, with additional content accessible via The CW’s digital platforms. The network continues to expand its sports portfolio, which includes Atlantic Coast Conference and Pac-12 sporting events, WWE NXT, Grand Slam Track, Inside the NFL, and more.

These impressive results also mark a strong start for Michael Perman, who was named The CW Network’s new senior vice president last week. Overseeing strategy, programming, and media rights, Perman is poised to play a key role in shaping the network’s sports coverage in the years ahead.
