For KFI 640 Morning Host Bill Handel, The Wildfires are LA’s 9/11

0

The Wildfires in the Los Angeles region have dominated news coverage in recent weeks, and justifiably so. According to KFI-AM 640 morning host Bill Handel, this is the equivalent of 9/11 in the City of Angels.

Handel would know about the largest stories to hit Los Angeles. 2025 marks the 40th year the host has been in mornings at the iHeartMedia Los Angeles news/talk station.

When asked where it ranked in the top stories he’s covered in his illustrious career, Handel had a quick answer.

“It is certainly probably in the top five, I would guess. Or certainly within the top 10,” he shared. “And for those people that are caught up in the fire, of course it’s the biggest story of their lives, but it’s pretty extraordinary in terms of the devastation. We’re used to wildfires that can actually eat up hundreds of thousands of acres. This didn’t, but where it burned was in the middle of highly dense areas with a lot of houses. 10,000 homes went up over the course of the two fires.

“This was a big big deal. It was a national story, actually was in the international story, but it had a special significance because this was a local story, much like 9/11 was one of the biggest stories in the world but for New Yorkers they had particular significance and that’s the same here. I think I have to make that analogy.”

Bill Handel noted that both his ex-wife and his daughter were forced to evacuate, while he was not in much danger at his Orange County home. While his concern for his family was obvious, he said his job was to block out the noise and focus on disseminating the most important information.

“I’ve been doing this a long time and you have to focus. I mean even to the point where 9/11, there was so much information coming in. We had producers that were throwing me stories from every place,” said Handel. “In any break, I was screaming to get background on Saudi Arabia and Osama Bin Laden, because they knew very early on that he had done it, in the New York attacks.

“I remember there was an army airplane that crashed into the Empire State Building in 1948. I said ‘I want everything about that.’ So, you stay focused because that’s what I do. I’m paid to stay focused and have to. Focus is what I do. What do you do to do your job? Well, it’s what you do you have to do.”

The story will continue to develop with greater twists and turns. Bill Handel said KFI-AM 640 will stay on top of the story since it will be so important to such wide swaths of the station’s audience. And he shared insight on what he thinks might be next.

“The next step are these fires that are happening again. There’s several steps now. We’re gonna get involved with rebuilding. We’re gonna be talking probably about contractors that are coming in from out-of-state, the fraud that’s gonna go on, the scams that we’re gonna hear about, the insurance problems .tTey were going to occur and one of the big ones is a lot of in Southern California — and this shocked me — were part of the California Fair Plan which is the insurance policy of last resort, when insurance company cannot ensure or will not insure a property.

“People go to this fair plan, that only covers fire insurance. That’s it. Doesn’t cover anything else. You have to pay a lot of money for it. People who have private insurance, Allstate, that had Farmers. I was surprised there was enough money or there is enough money to cover the claims for the private insurance. Because they buy re-insurance, they insure themselves who insure themselves. The California Fair Plan is effectively broke. There is no money in there. The claims are gonna be in the billions. It has $300 million in the plan. So that’s gonna be a huge story, how the state is gonna have to bail out all of these homeowners.”

Times like these — when KFI-AM 640 is at its best, covering the biggest events that matter to its Southern California audience — are why Bill Handel was recently named the top host in the Barrett News Media Top 20 Major Market Morning Show category. He shared that he’s appreciative of the recognition from the news/talk radio industry, more so than other awards.

“It means a lot because look at who voted. These are peers,” said Handel. “These are people in the business and there is nothing as significant. I think as satisfying it’s being told by peers that you are good, anybody behind the mic — anybody in television or radio — you get so many bullshit awards. It is incredible the level of the crap that you receive for just being behind a microphone. This is pretty significant and this is a real honor. It’s something that I wear with a lot of pride. That’s I think the difference.”

Mastering Time Management: Proven Strategies for Home-Based Business Success

0

Running a business from home can be incredibly rewarding, offering flexibility and a chance to shape your work-life balance. However, it comes with unique challenges—the chief one being managing your time effectively. Without the right strategies, the comfort of home can quickly become a distraction. This article explores actionable tips to help you manage time for home-based business success.

The Importance of a Structured Schedule

A structured schedule is the backbone of time management. Without clear boundaries between work and home life, it is easy to lose focus or be overworked.

Start by setting consistent work hours that align with your peak productivity times. For example, dedicate your early hours to tackling demanding tasks if you’re a morning person. Use digital calendars or apps to organize your day into blocks of focused work and breaks. This approach ensures you allocate enough time to essential tasks without feeling overwhelmed.

Equally important is sticking to your schedule. Treat your work hours as non-negotiable, just like in a traditional office setting. Share your schedule with family members or housemates to minimize interruptions during work hours.

Creating a Dedicated Workspace

Your environment plays a crucial role in how effectively you manage your time. A dedicated workspace fosters focus and helps establish a professional mindset.

Choose a quiet corner of your home where you can work without distractions. Invest in ergonomic furniture and adequate lighting to make the space comfortable and conducive to productivity. Keep your workspace organized by storing essential tools and documents within arm’s reach while eliminating clutter.

Setting physical boundaries is just as important as mental ones. Make it clear to others in your household that your workspace is off-limits during work hours, ensuring you can concentrate without unnecessary interruptions.

Prioritizing Tasks with the Right Tools

Task prioritization can make or break your time management efforts. Not every task on your to-do list has the same urgency or importance.

Start each day by listing out your tasks and categorizing them based on their priority. The Eisenhower Matrix—a simple tool that divides tasks into urgent, non-urgent, important, and less important—can be highly effective. Focus on completing high-priority tasks first, leaving lower-priority items for later.

Technology can be a game-changer here. Apps like Trello or Asana help you organize tasks visually, making it easier to track deadlines and progress. These tools also reduce mental clutter, allowing you to focus on execution rather than remembering what needs to be done.

Finding Ways to Earn Some Extra Money at Home

For many home-based business owners, diversifying income streams can be a valuable time management strategy. By exploring additional revenue opportunities, you can build financial stability without overextending yourself.

Consider leveraging skills or hobbies to earn some extra money at home. For instance, if you have a knack for graphic design, you could offer freelance services during quieter business periods. Alternatively, creating digital products like eBooks or online courses can generate passive income with minimal ongoing effort.

When adding new income streams, ensure they align with your existing workflow. Overloading yourself with too many commitments can disrupt your schedule and reduce overall productivity. Balance is key to maintaining your primary business focus while supplementing your earnings.

Strategies to Avoid Burnout

Working from home can blur the lines between personal and professional life, increasing the risk of burnout. Protecting your mental and physical well-being is essential for long-term success.

Schedule regular breaks throughout your day. A 5-10 minute pause every hour can recharge your focus and prevent fatigue. Use these moments to stretch, hydrate, or step outside for fresh air.

Set firm boundaries to separate work from leisure. For example, establish a strict end-of-day ritual, such as shutting down your computer or tidying up your workspace. This creates a psychological barrier that signals the end of your workday.

Finally, remember to take care of yourself. Adequate sleep, balanced nutrition, and physical activity are foundational to staying energized and productive. A healthy body supports a sharp mind, enabling you to tackle your tasks clearly.

Leveraging Technology for Efficiency

Technology offers countless tools to simplify and streamline your home-based business operations. The right solutions, from communication to automation, can save you time and energy.

Start with project management software to track progress and collaborate efficiently, primarily if you work with a team. Tools like Slack or Microsoft Teams can centralize communication, reducing the back-and-forth of email threads.

For solo entrepreneurs, automation is a game-changer. Platforms like Zapier or IFTTT connect different apps, automating repetitive tasks like data entry or social media posting. These small efficiencies can add up, freeing up your time for strategic activities.

Finally, consider using accounting and invoicing software to manage finances with ease. Keeping your books in order saves time and reduces stress during tax season.

Staying Motivated and Accountable

Motivation can waver when you’re managing everything from home. Building accountability into your routine helps you stay on track and achieve your goals.

Set clear, measurable objectives for your business. Break these down into smaller milestones to make progress feel achievable and motivating. Celebrate each win, no matter how small, to keep your momentum going.

Finding an accountability partner or mentor can also make a big difference. Regular check-ins with someone who understands your goals can provide encouragement and constructive feedback. Additionally, joining online communities of like-minded entrepreneurs can offer inspiration and new ideas.

Conclusion

Mastering time management is a journey, not a destination. It requires consistent effort, reflection, and adjustment. You can turn your home-based business into a thriving venture by creating a structured schedule, setting boundaries, leveraging technology, and taking care of yourself.

The key is to remain flexible and adapt your strategies as needed. With the right approach, you’ll find yourself managing your time effectively and enjoying the freedom and success that come with working from home.

How News/Talk Radio Covered the Presidential Inauguration of Donald Trump

0

The presidential oath of office was administered to Donald Trump on Monday afternoon, and news/talk radio had comprehensive coverage of the event.

Hundreds of stations around the country aired special coverage of Inauguration Day. Despite the hours of time dedicated to the event, the Oath of Office is actually incredibly short, as it took just over three-and-a-half minutes for both President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance to say the words  “I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the office of President/Vice President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”

On the local level, dozens of stations — from 1040 WHO in Des Moines to 77 WABC in New York — had talent in the capital city to witness the event as Donald Trump became just the second United States President to be elected to two, non-consecutive terms.

Additionally, national hosts like Clay Travis, Buck Sexton, and Sean Hannity hosted their programs live from Washington D.C. before, during, and after the inauguration took place. SiriusXM host Megyn Kelly also hosted her program from the capital during the historic day, and offered a special edition of her program on the satellite broadcaster’s Triumph channel, while other coverage took place on SiriusXM Patriot, SiriusXM Progress, and P.O.T.U.S.

At NPR, the network’s coverage was helmed by Michel Martin and Steve Inskeep, while White House correspondent Tamara Keith, and political correspondents Mara Liasson and Susan Davis contributed.

The radio coverage of the inauguration marks the 100-year anniversary of the first time the Oath of Office was heard live on AM/FM radio. In 1925, President Calvin Coolidge was sworn in with radio coverage heard on several stations across the nation. However, his inauguration took place on Wednesday, March 4th, which was the customary date before moved to January 20th in the early 1930s.

ESPN Averages 33.8 Million Viewers for Chiefs-Texans NFL Divisional Round Matchup

0

Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs earned the first of three playoff victories necessary for the team to capture its third consecutive Super Bowl championship. The victory over the Houston Texans was broadcast live on ESPN, ABC and ESPN+ and averaged 33.8 million viewers, according to fast national data from Nielsen Media Research. As a result, the contest is the most-watched NFL game in the history of ESPN dating back to 1987. The game peaked with 39.5 million viewers during the 7 to 7:15 p.m. EST quarter-hour, marking the highest peak audience of any network on the day.

The game is up 4% year-over-year from the divisional round contest between the Houston Texans and Baltimore Ravens in the early Saturday window last year. This presentation is also the most-watched non-Super Bowl NFL game for The Walt Disney Company, surpassing the audience for all 25 Disney NFL Playoff games taking place in the previous 29 years. Fourteen of these games were exclusively on ABC between 1996 and 2015, one was an ESPN exclusive and 10 were available on both ABC and ESPN from 2016 to 2024.

The Chiefs-Texans game is also the most-watched matchup under play-by-play announcer Joe Buck, analyst Troy Aikman and reporter Lisa Salters, who recently completed their third season working together. With this lead NFL broadcasting team, ESPN has aired seven of its eight most-watched NFL games in history. Furthermore, it is coming off its second most-watched season of Monday Night Football in network history, which averaged 15 million viewers per game.

ESPN and The Walt Disney Company will be broadcasting Super Bowl LXI to conclude the 2026 season from SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Calif. It will mark the first time both networks are simulcasting the Super Bowl championship and the first time ESPN has aired the Big Game in its history. The company is within its third year of a 10-year media rights deal with the NFL reportedly worth $2.7 billion annually.

FOX Sports Averages 33.6 Million Viewers for Commanders-Lions

0

On Saturday night, the Washington Commanders pulled off an upset victory against the No. 1-seeded Detroit Lions, punching their ticket to the NFC Championship Game. The NFC matchup averaged 33.6 million viewers across FOX, FOX Deportes and FOX Sports streaming platforms, marking the fourth most-watched Saturday NFC divisional game in FOX history. Moreover, the audience for the contest is projected to have peaked with 35.7 million viewers from the quarter-hour from 9:30 to 9:45 p.m. EST, according to data from Nielsen Media Research and Adobe Analytics.

FOX broadcast the Saturday NFC divisional game in the late-window last year, which featured the Green Bay Packers and San Francisco 49ers and averaged 37.54 million viewers. The Commanders-Lions game was down 10.5% year-over-year. Compared to the New York Giants and Philadelphia Eagles game in the comparable window two years ago, accruing an average of 28.64 million viewers, the game is up by 17.3%. FOX also broadcast the late-Sunday window divisional game under the previous broadcast deal, which amassed an average of 45.65 million viewers in the 2022 season when the 49ers faced the Dallas Cowboys.

The lead NFL on FOX broadcast team of play-by-play announcer Kevin Burkhardt, analyst Tom Brady and sideline reporters Erin Andrews and Tom Rinaldi were on the call for the game. Rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels garnered headlines securing his spot as the sixth rookie quarterback in NFL history to play in a conference championship game. Meanwhile, the result was disappointing for the Lions, who were looking to return to the NFC Championship Game and qualify for the Super Bowl for the first time in franchise history.

FOX Sports is in the midst of a 10-year media rights contract with the NFL reportedly worth $2.25 billion per year. The company will present Super Bowl LIX from New Orleans, La. next month on its linear broadcast network, along with streaming in 4K on the Tubi platform for the first time. The NFL is coming off its most-watched Super Bowl in league history, drawing an average of 123.7 million viewers on CBS, Nickelodeon, Univision, Paramount+ and NFL digital platforms, which was also the most-viewed television program in U.S. history.
