Dave Ross, Colleen O’Brien Sign Off From Seattle’s Morning News on KIRO Newsradio 97.3 FM

0

Thursday marked the end of an era on Seattle’s Morning News, as longtime hosts Dave Ross and Colleen O’Brien signed off from the KIRO Newsradio 97.3 FM show.

The duo had helmed mornings together for the past decade. For Ross, it was the culmination of a 47-year career working for the Bonneville Seattle news/talk station.

Many high-profile guests from the Seattle and Washington state political scene made guest appearances during Thursday’s show, including Gov. Jay Inslee (D-WA). Additionally, many current and former KIRO Newsradio personnel shared their memories of Ross and well-wishes for his future as he stepped away.

King County, where Seattle serves as the county seat, proclaimed Thursday, December 19th as “Dave Ross Day” in the county and its 39 cities.

Ross was succinct in his farewell message to Seattle listeners.

“You talk in a closed room, you don’t see the audience most of the time, and you wonder ‘Did I do anything today?’,” Ross said. “And I guess we did … What can I say? I want to see radio stay alive. It’s live, it’s immediate. There’s no buffering. It’s from our studio to that transmitter to that radio. Every smartphone should have an FM radio built in. AM, apparently, is technically impossible.

“But you should have an FM radio, because I tell you what, the day the internet goes dark radio will still be there. As long as there are people like you to do still do it. That’s your mission. That is my charge to you as the outgoing host of Seattle’s Morning News,” concluded Ross.

Carmelo Anthony Talking to NBC and Amazon for Potential NBA Analyst Roles, Per Report

0

With the NBA’s new media rights deals beginning next season, there have been many rumors about talent which will be needed for NBC, Amazon’s Prime Video and also at ESPN even though they are not a new partner. A report from Front Office Sports’ Michael McCarthy says former NBA star Carmelo Anthony is having discussions with both NBC and Amazon about game analyst and studio positions.

McCarthy reports Anthony is “talking to everybody” per his sources, and notes some sources are saying ESPN is also a possible landing spot. Anthony, 40, retired after the 2023 season after playing 19 years in the NBA. Anthony has launched several businesses since ending his playing days, including his own content company, creative7productions.

Other names which have been mentioned over the last few months include Dirk Nowitzki, Dwayne Wade, Jamal Crawford and Blake Griffin.

According to a report from Richard Deitsch of The Athletic, Amazon Prime Video will hire Taylor Rooks as lead host for its NBA pregame, halftime and postgame shows which will begin next season. Rooks, who is a current sideline reporter for TNT’s NBA coverage, is already working for Prime Video, doing features during coverage of Thursday Night Football.

Ian Eagle is expected to be the lead play-by-play announcer. Eagle is currently the local voice of the Brooklyn Nets and calls NBA games for TNT Sports. He also announces the NFL and NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament for CBS Sports, in addition to working NFL radio broadcasts for Westwood One.

Recently, a report has come out linking former Dallas Mavericks star Dirk Nowitzki to Amazon as a place where he would start his career as a basketball analyst. In the report from Deitsch, he also names Kevin Harlan as someone he believes Amazon will pursue as a play-by-play announcer.

According to a report earlier this week from Richard Deitsch of The Athletic, Amazon Prime Video will hire Taylor Rooks as lead host for its NBA pregame, halftime and postgame shows. Ian Eagle is expected to be the lead play-by-play announcer.

Kevin Harlan has also been mentioned as someone Amazon will pursue as a play-by-play announcer.

Amazon is the brand-new member of the NBA media family along with ESPN and NBC. The streaming network will air 60 games per season as part of its contract. Prime Video will have Thursday night NBA broadcasts which will start at the conclusion of the NFL season, as well as Friday night games throughout the season.

Neil Cavuto Leaving Fox News After Nearly 30 Years

After 28 years, Fox News anchor Neil Cavuto is exiting the cable news giant, with today being his final day with the channel.

Thursday’s episode of Your World will be Cavuto’s last as his contract is up at the conclusion of the month.

Sources close to the situation claim the longtime anchor was offered a new contract to remain with Fox News, but decided against renewing.

In addition to his work at Fox News, Neil Cavuto also anchored a show — Cavuto: Coast to Coast — on Fox Business.

Fox News congratulated Cavuto on his long tenure with the network in a statement to Barrett Media.

“Neil Cavuto’s illustrious career has been a master class in journalism and we’re extremely proud of his incredible 28-year run with FOX News Media. His programs have defined business news and set the standard for the entire industry. We wish him a heartfelt farewell and all the best on his next chapter.”

The 66-year-old Cavuto is expected to address his departure on his Fox News program Thursday afternoon. It is unclear what the next step in his broadcasting career — which has included a previous tenure at CNBC — going forward

Gregg Giannotti: Karma is Coming Back to Get Doug Gottlieb a Little Bit

0

Throughout the week, Green Bay Phoenix men’s basketball head coach and FOX Sports Radio host Doug Gottlieb has been in the news cycle surrounding comments made on social media and in a press conference. Gottlieb exchanged words with ESPN senior NFL insider Adam Schefter on X regarding a report that Sacramento State had $50 million in NIL money. The next day on his radio show, he admitted his tone was “pretty negative” while adding that he felt the response from Schefter pointing out that his basketball team was in last place and had lost seven straight games felt personal.

Gottlieb was absent from the Wednesday edition of his radio program, which happened to coincide with his team’s matchup against the Michigan Tech Huskies. Green Bay lost the matchup by two points, and video circulated of Gottlieb purportedly referring to the opponent as “Nobody U” in a press conference that occurred before tip-off. The situation surrounding Gottlieb has drawn intrigue from those in collegiate sports and the media business, including WFAN host Gregg Giannotti, who addressed the situation on the Thursday edition of Boomer & Gio.

“I said this the other day and I don’t dislike the guy, but I’m really enjoying this Doug Gottlieb thing because now everybody is just crapping all over him, and it’s almost like karma has come back to get him in a little bit,” Giannotti said. “The way he’s been a talk show host, he’s rubbed people the wrong way and said certain things and been snarky, and now he decides to take this college basketball job while he’s still a talk show host and he’s failing at a miserable level, so much so that it’s become national news.”

Giannotti concluded his discourse by articulating that it was fun to watch what was taking place, leading co-host Boomer Esiason to convey that it probably would not have become national news had he not gone up against Schefter. Furthermore, he mentioned that more people are paying attention now and that it is something he is going to have to deal with. Giannotti added that if he was his friend, he would advise him to give up either the head coaching job or his radio program, affirming that he looks weathered as if he had not slept in the last week.

“At this point, I don’t think he makes it past this year the way that things are going, but that’s why he kept his talk show job,” Giannotti said. “He knew this probably wouldn’t last.”

“They probably couldn’t pay him as much as he would have liked,” Esiason replied. “That’s the other thing.”

CBS Averages 9.4 Million Viewers for Army-Navy, Best Audience on Record

0

The annual college football matchup between the Army Black Knights and Navy Midshipmen took place Saturday afternoon ahead of several Bowl games in various conferences and the start of the College Football Playoff. The 31-13 win by Navy garnered an audience averaging 9.4 million viewers, the largest average viewership for the game since 1989. This annual matchup averaged 8.45 million viewers in 1992, representing the previous highmark of the matchup, according to Jon Lewis of Sports Media Watch.

Although the Army-Navy game placed 11th overall among the most-watched college football games of the season, it was the most-watched game that did not include the Big Ten Conference or Southeastern Conference. The next closest game in terms of overall viewership was the Big 12 Conference championship between Arizona State and Iowa, which averaged 6.9 million viewers. The Black Knights and Midshipmen entered their annual college football game with 19 combined wins, the most in the history of the rivalry.

The matchup was the second most-watched college football game for CBS Sports in the college football season. Oregon and Penn State drew an average audience of 10.5 million viewers two weeks ago for the Big Ten Conference championship game. Presentations of the Big Ten matchup and Army-Navy were the only two games televised by CBS to place in the top 25 for most-watched college football games in the regular season.

CBS Sports recently reached an agreement with Army and Navy for a 10-year extension of multiplatform rights for the matchup running through 2038. The network has broadcast the game every year since 1996.

Hoppy Kercheval to Step Away From ‘Talkline’, Dave Wilson and T.J. Meadows to Step In

1

Hoppy Kercheval has been a West Virginia radio staple for nearly 50 years. That run is about to end, however, as he’s announced his upcoming retirement from his long-running show.

Kercheval will step away from the MetroNews Talkline show he has helmed at the end of the year. Veteran broadcasters Dave Wilson and T.J. Meadows will step into the role previously held by the radio legend.

“It is hard to step away from the show that has meant so much to me, but I have confidence in Dave and T.J.,” Kercheval said. “They are professionals who share my passion for bringing relevant and compelling stories to our state.”

Kercheval has been the only host in the WV MetroNews show’s long history.

Wilson and Meadows will begin helming the show on Monday, January 6th.

“Although Dave and TJ will be new to hosting Talkline on a daily basis, both have had extensive experience with the show,” WVRC Media President and CEO George Pelletier said. “We are excited to have two seasoned veterans to assist us in the next chapter of Talkline.”

Despite his departure from the daily radio show, Hoppy Kercheval will continue to provide his weekly commentary for the network, and will also work on special projects and remain a member of the 3 Guys Before the Game podcast.

Triton Digital Unveils New Data and Trends Insights Dashboard for Sounder

0

Triton Digital has announced a new dashboard for Sounder, its AI-powered platform for podcasters.

As part of its new dashboard, Sounder will display the top categories, entities, and brand suitability trends taking place in the podcast and digital audio spaces.

“This feature provides publishers with a more in-depth view of IAB categories that were present in their catalog, beyond the genre of their catalog, within the past three months,” a statement from the company reads.

These new features will equip content creators with new data and insights to help understand content and inventory for sales opportunities.

“Brand suitability is increasingly becoming table stakes as brands seek more control over where they reach their audiences. Meanwhile, publishers have more audience insights than ever before but they often face the challenge of trying to decide where to start with those insights,” said Triton Digital Executive Vice President of Podcast and Content Delivery Sharon Taylor.

“With Sounder’s new Overview analysis, publishers have the data they need to showcase the depth and trustworthiness of their content and give advertisers more confidence in their contextual targeting campaigns.”

The development of the new dashboard comes on the heels of Triton Digital releasing the new PromoHub for Sounder earlier this year. The PromoHub automates aspects of the podcast promotion process. Triton acquired Sounder in March of this year.

Emirates NBA Cup Final Averages 2.99 Million Viewers on ABC

0

The final matchup within the Emirates NBA Cup in-season tournament, which featured the Milwaukee Bucks facing the Oklahoma City Thunder, garnered the second-largest audience of the NBA season. The game, which aired in primetime on ABC, averaged 2.99 million viewers, which is down 35% compared to last year’s final matchup. LeBron James and Anthony Davis led the Los Angeles Lakers to a victory in that year over the Indiana Pacers in a game that averaged 4.58 million viewers. The 1.75 rating is also down 29% compared to last year, according to data from Nielsen Media Research.

Viewership of the National Basketball Association on ABC, ESPN and TNT is down a collective 19% from last season, amassing an audience of 1.4 million viewers per game, according to data from Jon Lewis of Sports Media Watch. Nonetheless, the matchup between the Bucks-Thunder was the largest regular-season audience of the year excluding the Opening Night matchup between the New York Knicks and Boston Celtics, which averaged 3.01 million viewers. Both matchups between the Bucks and Thunder last year aired on NBA TV and averaged under 400,000 viewers.

Semifinal games within the Emirates NBA Cup also registered declines, with the showdown between the Oklahoma City Thunder and Houston Rockets averaging 1.89 million viewers on ABC. Viewership was down 13% from the Western Conference semifinal game last year, and the 1.1 rating represented a 15% diminution from that time as well. Earlier in the day, the Eastern Conference game between the Milwaukee Bucks and Atlanta Hawks averaged 1 million viewers, indicative of a 37% decline. This game was up against the annual Army-Navy matchup on CBS, which attained its strongest viewership in 35 years.

Adam Silver, commissioner of the NBA, addressed the decline in viewership on the season thus far and mentioned how “cable television viewership is down double digits.” The league recently signed new 11-year media rights deals with The Walt Disney Company, Comcast and Amazon reportedly worth a total of $77 billion.
