Salem Radio Network Moves Hugh Hewitt to Afternoons, Adds Chris Stigall for Mornings After Exit of Sebastian Gorka

0

After the departure of Sebastian Gorka, Salem Radio Network is retooling its line, with changes for Hugh Hewitt and the addition of Chris Stigall.

Sebastian Gorka departed the network last month to accept a position in the second Donald Trump administration as the Deputy Assistant to the President and Senior Director of Counterterrorism.

The Hugh Hewitt Show will shift from morning drive to afternoon drive. The program will now be heard in the 3-6 PM ET window that the show hosted by Gorka previously occupied.

Moving into morning drive — 6-9 AM ET — will be Chris Stigall. Stigall hosts mornings on AM 990 The Answer in Philadelphia for the Salem Media Group station, a position he has held since 2006. He has also previously worked in Kansas City news/talk radio.

Salem Radio Network programs will also be available on Salem News Channel, the 24/7 streaming news outlet that Salem Media Group operates.

“While we are sorry to lose a great host in Dr. Gorka, we are delighted to provide these opportunities to Hugh and Chris,” said Salem Senior Vice President of Spoken Word, Phil Boyce. “This is an exciting time to be doing conservative News and Talk programming. Our listeners are enthused about the new Trump administration, and these two shows will be all over this transition.”

“I am delighted to make this move to afternoons. Breaking news from Washington DC happens largely during the day, and now I will have the opportunity to provide insight and opinion on the news as it happens,” said Hewitt, who had been in morning drive since April 2016. “Salem is the best conservative media company on the planet, and I look forward to many years driving people home, instead of driving them to work.”

“Salem has become a national leader in conservative media and free speech at a time of great consequences,” added Stigall. “God put it on my heart from a very young age to work in broadcasting. It feels so good to know this extraordinary professional opportunity comes from a management team of God-honoring men and women in Salem. I can’t thank my Salem colleagues, sponsors, and listeners enough for their long-time support and I’m so excited to grow our morning family all across the country.”

Netflix Tabs Robert Griffin III, Mina Kimes, Drew Brees, Manti Te’o, Kay Adams to Join NFL Christmas Studio Show: Report

0

Ahead of its inaugural presentation of National Football League games on Christmas Day, Netflix has reportedly added several analysts to its panel for the studio programming surrounding the matchups. Before Netflix presents the opening matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and Pittsburgh Steelers, several commentators will take part in a pregame show, including former Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III.

Griffin formerly appeared on Sunday NFL Countdown at ESPN before he was let go by the network prior to the start of the NFL season. Over the last several months, he has hosted episodes of his Outta Pocket podcast distributed across various platforms. Griffin reportedly had two years remaining on his deal when he was let go by ESPN and was considered to be the network’s No. 2 college football game analyst.

Manti Te’o, who joined NFL Network over the summer and has been contributing to Good Morning Football, is also said to be serving as a studio analyst for the broadcast. Te’o, a former linebacker in the NFL and at Notre Dame, initially appeared on NFL Network this past August where he discussed his emotions towards a Netflix documentary telling his story. Moreover, he expressed his gratitude towards NFL Network giving him the opportunity to be in front of the camera and discuss the game of football.

ESPN analyst Mina Kimes will also reportedly be part of the studio program, which takes place shortly after her participation in The Simpsons Funday Football. Kimes has been a member of ESPN since 2014, initially starting as a writer for its magazine, and she has grown her portfolio over its multiplatform offerings in the ensuing years. Outside of the company, she also works with Omaha Productions and Meadowlark Media in different content endeavors.

Drew Brees, former quarterback of the New Orleans Saints, will make his return to the sports media landscape taking part in the show as well, according to the report filed by Michael McCarthy of Front Office Sports. Brees spent one year at NBC Sports where he contributed to its coverage of the NFL and Notre Dame, but he was not retained for the ensuing season. Earlier in the NFL season, Brees appeared on an edition of Monday Night Countdown on ESPN.

The studio show will reportedly emanate from Los Angeles featuring host Kay Adams, who also anchors the Up & Adams morning show on FanDuel TV distributed on linear television and digital platforms around the country. Adams was formerly the host of Good Morning Football on NFL Network but departed the show during the summer of 2022 before joining the new sports media entity. As previously reported, the NFL Christmas opening matchup between the Steelers and Chiefs will feature play-by-play announcer Ian Eagle with analysts Nate Burleson and J.J. Watt. The later matchup between the Baltimore Ravens and Houston Texans will include play-by-play announcer Noah Eagle and analyst Greg Olsen.

Netflix and the National Football League agreed to a three-season deal for the streaming service to present games on Christmas Day, with the company reportedly paying about $75 million per contest this season. The platform currently has approximately 282.7 million global subscribers and has been venturing into the live sports landscape over the last several months.

For example, the presentation of the fight between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson, in conjunction with Most Valuable Promotions and EverWonder, secured an average minute audience of 108 million live global viewers and was said by the company to be the most-streamed sporting event ever. Netflix has also contributed to cultivating ancillary content, including documentaries such as Quarterback, Starting 5 and Full Swing, along with The Roast of Tom Brady special that aired this past May.

Gregg Giannotti: Jon Heyman ‘Just Lost It’ on WFAN

0

The Major League Baseball offseason kicked into full gear on Sunday night when superstar outfielder Juan Soto reportedly agreed to a 15-year, $765 million contract to join the New York Mets. Soto, who is a four-time All-Star selection and former World Series champion, previously played for the crosstown rival New York Yankees last season, but has now reportedly moved to the National League on the largest contract in professional sports history. Before the purported news circulated social media on Sunday night, WFAN host Keith McPherson was discussing the possibilities surrounding Soto’s free agency and welcomed MLB Network insider and New York Post columnist Jon Heyman on his Friday program to discuss the news.

During the interview on WFAN, McPherson mentioned Heyman’s social media post from two years ago in which he tweeted, “Arson Judge appears headed to Giants,” misspelling the first name of the Yankees slugger. Additionally, he asked Heyman what share of Soto’s new contract he would receive, assuming that agent Scott Boras was leaking information and potentially paying him to write certain things. Ostensibly taking this as a threat to his credibility, Heyman emphatically expressed his disbelief and proclaimed that he would not appear on WFAN again. Gregg Giannotti came to the defense of his colleague and also admitted that the segment was funny.

“It’s just great when he flips out and hangs the phone up,” Giannotti said. “Now, after doing a lot of thinking about this, talking to Keith in person about it, I’ve come to this conclusion. Keith, whether you agree or not about him bringing up those things, meaning the Boras relationship or the Arson Judge tweet, was ont doing it in a malicious manner at all.”

Giannotti presumed that McPherson did not foresee Heyman taking umbrage towards parts of the discussion that could have been insinuated. In fact, morning show co-host Boomer Esiason added that McPherson mentioned that he brought Heyman on because of the respect he has merited and integrity exhibited as a journalist. Giannotti added that McPherson is immersed in the internet world and that the narrative of Heyman being connected to Boras for his information has percolated.

“What I think happened was Jon has heard that Boras thing a million times – he’s heard it a million times – he’s probably sick of it,” Giannotti said. “It was the two-year anniversary, actually, of the Arson Judge tweet, so he might have seen a lot that day. It’s been a long offseason of him dealing with this Soto thing. He’s on WFAN on a Friday night with a host he doesn’t particularly know, and he just lost it.”

Esiason was surprised to learn that some people were calling for McPherson to be fired from WFAN after the Heyman interview. Prior to making this remark, Esiason stated that McPherson is “a huge Yankees shill” and someone who fans can trust will speak positively about the team. At the same time, he acknowledged that Mets fans may not appreciate McPherson, especially as it pertains to this type of situation.

“The reaction to it was insane to me,” Giannotti said. “Like nobody really cares that much about protecting Jon Heyman. Everybody was such a fraud with that deal, and then when I made a joke about it and put it out there, people responded, ‘Oh, don’t stoop to Keith’s level. Oh, you guys are so classless. Oh, don’t go down low like that.’ I’m like, ‘Wait a second. First of all, I’m not above anything.’ I’m not above being sophomoric, I’m not above being a jerk, I’m not above any of that stuff. I don’t know why anybody would think that. We’re here, we trash talk everybody all day long.”

Esiason recollected that Heyman was once a paid contributor at WFAN when Mark Chernoff was responsible for its programming. Giannotti recalled that it coincided with his time as a producer and was borne out of the outlet not breaking a lot of stories. Heyman appeared on several programs to discuss baseball, but GIannotti remembers Esiason and Carton declining the offer. Esiason articulated that he did not want to hear regurgitated topics from the newspaper and that there was “really no substance” since players can change their minds.

“That’s why I found it curious or funny or interesting – whatever you want to use – when Jon’s like, ‘I’m done with WFAN,’” Giannotti said. “They paid him a lot of money for a long time to do squat. That’s a fact – they really did.”

Amazon Prime Video’s ‘Thursday Night Football’ Draws Record Viewership With Lions-Packers

0

Amazon Prime Video said its Thursday Night Football game between the Detroit Lions and the Green Bay Packers drew 17.29 million viewers, a record for TNF on Prime Video, according to data from Nielsen.

Viewership for the game, which went down to the wire before the Lions kicked a last-second field goal to win the game, topped Prime’s previous record by more than a million viewers. In addition, it is the most streamed regular-season NFL game ever, topping a Cowboys-Giants game in September.

The game peaked with 18.87 million viewers between 9:15 and 930 p.m. ET.

Before the game, TNF Tonight averaged 2.12 million viewers, also setting an all-time high.

Through 12 games this season, TNF is averaging 13.61 million viewers, pacing +9% ahead of the 2023 season-to-date average, +15% above last year’s full-season average, and +42% over 2022’s inaugural TNF on Prime season average.

Dave Coombs Moving To Mornings At WKLH Milwaukee

0

With Dave Luczak’s retirement from mornings at Saga Communications’ “Classic Rock 96.5” WKLH Milwaukee set for December 20, the station has confirmed that current midday host Dave Coombs will transition to the morning slot alongside Dorene Michaels and Marcus Allen starting in January.

Coombs has been part of WKLH since December 2020. Throughout much of his time with the station, he worked remotely while hosting the morning show at Saga Rock’s “Lazer 99.3/98.5” WLZX in Springfield, MA, a role he maintained until April of this year.

Coombs said, “When WKLH was assembling a list of candidates to replace Dave Luczak, I was lucky I had the correct first name. I’ve had the pleasure of working with Dave Luczak for four of his 40+ years of service, and I wish we could all continue together forever. The new morning show will contain a lot of your favorite elements, along with some new twists. And we’ll be counting on WKLH listeners to add a lot of content as well. Can’t wait to get started with Dorene and Marcus on the next generation of morning radio in Milwaukee.”

WKLH Brand Manager Borna Velic added, “I want to congratulate Dave Luczak on an extraordinary career. He set a gold standard for Milwaukee broadcasting, and I wish him nothing but the best in his well-deserved retirement. I’m thrilled to welcome Dave Coombs to ‘KLH mornings as he brings incredible experience and enthusiasm. I’m confident that he, Dorene, and Marcus will continue to deliver an entertaining morning show our audience expects and deserves.”

He spent five years at WAQX in Syracuse from 1990 to 1995 and enjoyed a two-decade tenure at WTKW in Syracuse from 1995 until 2015. Before relocating to Springfield, Coombs was also on the air with AC “Lite 98.7” WLZW in Utica, NY.

Army-Navy Football Game Staying on CBS Under 10-Year Extension

0

The Army-Navy college football game will remain on CBS Sports under a 10-year rights deal extension announced by the network and the military academies.

Known as “America’s Game,” the annual Army-Navy contest has aired on CBS since 1996. The new deal will be in effect through 2038 and will enable CBS to stream the game on Paramount+.

Financial terms were not disclosed. Insurance company USAA has been the presenting sponsor for the game.

“CBS Sports is immensely proud of our decades-long association with the Army-Navy football game and our partnerships with the US Military and US Naval Academies,” David Berson, president and CEO of CBS Sports said in a statement.

“America’s Game is special and has always been about more than football. We are privileged to document the extraordinary stories of the cadets and midshipmen on and off the field and will continue to celebrate the traditions and history of this great game while highlighting these venerated service academies for years to come,” Berson said.

The agreement gives CBS rights to create shoulder programming on CBS Sports Network, including live coverage of the pregame March On pageantry. CBS Sports Network will also carry archival programming and reruns of the game after it appears on CBS.

In addition, CBS has rights to stream the Army-Navy game worldwide.

“The CBS commitment of supporting the Midshipmen and Cadets is deep rooted and ingrained in our history and fiber of their appreciation for the military,” said Chet Gladchuk, director of athletics at the U.S. Naval Academy.

. “The CBS production always speaks to more than just a football game, but the many stories of patriotism, our collective pride in duty, honor, freedom, and the strength of our great nation,” Gladchuk said. “Every December, this leading network portrays America’s game as more than just a football contest, but also as an event that exudes a universal respect for the purity of amateurism embedded in the character of our nation’s future leaders. Our immeasurable gratitude for this long-term commitment by CBS to our military community and their enthusiasm for continuing an amazing partnership.”“

“CBS has long been synonymous with the Army-Navy game, and this extension strengthens our partnership with a first-class brand, enhancing America’s game and showcasing the remarkable talent of our cadet-athletes on the national stage,” said Mike Buddie, director of athletics at the U.S. Naval Academy.
