700 WLW Host Mike McConnell Never Thought He’d Be a Morning Host But Now Dominates the Cincinnati Radio Ratings

Mike McConnell spent more than 25 years in his radio career outside of morning drive. In fact, he never even considered that he would be capable of working in the daypart. But, as you well know, things change. And that’s exactly what happened at 700 WLW, the heritage iHeartMedia news/talk brand in Cincinnati.

His move to morning drive was one born out of a simple motivation.

“That’s where they needed me when our long-time morning man Jim Scott decided to retire,” McConnell said of his 2015 move to the morning timeslot.

He admitted, however, that the change from longform news/talk host to morning news host wasn’t an easy transition.

“I am good at long-winded and getting a point across concisely is not my strong suit,” he said with a chuckle. “I’m better at it now because I’ve done it for a while, but being quick and concise was not something I ever worked on until I had to, let’s put it that way.”

Despite not being second nature to him, Mike McConnell said quickening his delivery did get easier with practice.

“It took probably half a year,” he said. “My on-air approach is very loose and very relaxed, and I will laugh at myself or mock myself. So it’s not real pressure, because whenever something goes wrong to start the show, I always say the first hour (5-6 AM) is the practice hour, and then the real show starts at 6 AM. So anything I do stupidly in the first hour doesn’t count. And that’s just my attitude. It kind of carries over to the rest of the show, too … I don’t put that much pressure on myself, because I think the audience can take the joke.”

700 WLW has seen a ratings surge in recent months. The iHeartMedia Cincinnati station has experienced ratings that haven’t been reached since the 1970s. And McConnell believes that loose approach plays an important role in the success of the station overall, and also his morning news show.

“We kind of have a reputation, sort of a legacy maybe, of being a news/talk station that doesn’t take itself overly serious,” said McConnell. “When it’s time to be serious, you get serious, but it’s always sort of a loose on-air approach. It’s fluffy, not stuffy. That has a lot to do with it. If you go back to when I first started here, and we had a different set of on-air people, it was the same then. It’s a reputation that’s been like this, probably since the 80s.”

McConnell believes that many in the industry misunderstood the success of Rush Limbaugh during his heyday. The prevailing thought, McConnell shared, was that being conservative was the key to big ratings and revenue. Instead, it was much more important to be entertaining than conservative, which is what Limbaugh perfected and what hosts at 700 WLW have continued to do.

Mike McConnell spent 25 years at 700 WLW before joining WGN Radio in 2010. He returned to the Cincinnati station in 2014 before moving to mornings in 2015. Count it all up, and he’s approaching his 50th year in the medium.

So, naturally, he’s fielding questions about what the future looks like. And he thinks there is still gas left in the proverbial tank.

“I got the gas in the tank, but I still like the idea of doing some other things. So I’d say retirement is on the horizon, the not-too-distant horizon, but that’ll probably come along,” he shared.

Despite that not-too-distant horizon drawing near, Mike McConnell still finds value in having a platform with a large audience. That, coupled with the management he receives with a Program Director like Scott Rinehart who “hire people who know what they’re doing and then leave them alone,” he isn’t chomping at the bit to call it a career just quite yet.

“When I started, my college radio station was a paid position. we were the only commercial FM in the country led by students, at the University of Dayton. So I started there in April of ’75. So, next April will be 50 years of doing this for a living. At that point, you can say whatever happens, that’s a pretty good run. And maybe it’s just about enough. It’s good to have a nice round number like that.”

According to a report from Ryan Glasspiegel of the New York Post, ESPN’s Around the Horn will come to an end sometime in the summer of next year. Glasspiegel had reported this possibility going back to July, with sources telling him the show would end before the start of the 2025-26 football season.

The show, which launched on ESPN in 2002, has been hosted for the last 20 years by Tony Reali who took over in 2004 from original host Max Kellerman. Reali stepped in when Kellerman left the network for Fox Sports Net. The show had taken the time slot previously occupied by Unscripted with Chris Connelly.

The show has aired over 4,800 episodes and has been overseen by Erik Rydholm who is the creator of Pardon the Interruption and serves as its executive producer. Aaron Solomon has been the longtime producer of Around the Horn.

The Gazette’s Woody Paige will go down as the all-time leader in wins and appearances on the show as he has earned the title more than 1000 times more than The Dallas Morning News’ Tim Cowlishaw who is the only other person besides Paige to win more than 500 times. Other top performers include Bill Plaschke, Kevin Blackistone, J.A. Adande and Jay Mariotti.

Only seven panelists have ever appeared on the show without winning at least once. John Powers and Dan Shanoff both have the distinction of having appeared on the show the most times without ever winning, both appeared five times.

Five people can claim a 100% winning percentage, all appearing on the show once and winning the episode. That group is made up of Mark Cuban, Lil Wayne, Bruce Arthur, Malika Andrews and Christine Williamson.

The 2024 election brought on political advertising that was labeled as “unprecedented” in the lead-up to Election Day. New AdImpact data shows just how big it was.

In total, $10.86 billion was spent on political advertising throughout the 2024 election cycle. That figure represented an uptick compared to the $8.47 billion during the 2020 election season.

“The pace of spending in the Presidential general election was largely defined by Biden’s historic decision to exit the race,” AdImpact shared. “Between July 22nd and Election Day, the Presidential election saw $2.3 billion in political spending. Over that time, Democrats held a nearly $460 million spending advantage.”

It wasn’t simply the race for the White House that propelled the record spending. Senate races were also large drivers. For instance, in Ohio, the election between Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) and challenger and eventual winner Bernie Moreno (R) was the most expensive Senate race in history, with $477 million was spent on that race alone. In total, $2.6 billion was spent on Senate elections.

U.S. House of Representatives races tallied $1.68 billion in political advertising during the cycle. Additionally, digital saw a large portion of election spending. From when Vice President Kamala Harris entered the race until election day, $420 million was spent in the digital sphere, accounting for 18% of all spending.

Report: ‘The Michael Kay Show’ in Limbo at ESPN New York

A report from The Athletic’s Andrew Marchand suggests that after almost two decades in afternoon drive on New York sports radio, The Michael Kay Show is in jeopardy of coming to an end. Kay’s contract expires in the middle of December according to the report, and he has yet to receive “a concrete offer” to stay.

One option according to Marchand through his sources has Kay potentially moving to middays to host a solo show.

Kay, who will turn 64 in February, signed a two-year agreement with ESPN in December of 2022. Kay is also the longtime television voice of the New York Yankees which he calls for YES Network. Indications are that he will remain in that role.

The current afternoon show features Kay alongside Don La Greca and Peter Rosenberg. Rosenberg also does mornings for Hot 97 and is part of the WWE broadcasting crew. Marchand mentioned Rosenberg’s contract is also coming up, and a scenario exists that puts current midday host Alan Han in afternoons with La Greca, Kay hosting middays solo, and Rosenberg the odd man out.

Rick DiPietro and Dave Rothenberg host the morning show on 880 ESPN, and while the report says they could be an option in afternoons if Kay doesn’t return, it’s believed they would stay in morning. Another pairing could be former New York Jets player Bart Scott, who currently works with Hahn, teaming with Dan Graca from 10a-1p. That move would result in Mike Greenberg’s show no longer airing on the station.
