Doyel To Join The Indy Star

Gregg Doyel, CBSSports.com’s lead sports columnist who has won five top-10s in the Associated Press Sports Editors’ writing competition since 2000, is joining IndyStar.

“Gregg is an accomplished journalist on the national sports scene — a talented storyteller who’s unflinching in his opinions and who has a deep passion for his work,” IndyStar Executive Editor Jeff Taylor said.

Doyel, who will start as IndyStar’s sports columnist on Oct. 20, is the author of two books: “Coach K: Building the Duke Dynasty” and “Kentucky Wildcats: Where Have You Gone?” He has been a sports radio host in the Cincinnati market and a frequent guest on ESPN and other top radio shows, including Dan Dakich’s in Indianapolis.

Doyel joined Dakich’s show on Wednesday to talk about his move and why he decided to leave his national gig for the Star.

“I always wanted to do local columns. A lot of people are asking me, ‘Why would you leave a national job for a so-called local job?’ But I don’t look at that way. I look at it as do people care about what I’m writing or not. Indianapolis will be a concentrated marketplace that will care about every single thing I write. If I’m writing about it, my target audience is going to care about it — every single day.”

He worked previously as the national basketball writer for CBS Sports and covered the Miami Marlins for the Miami Herald and the ACC for the Charlotte Observer.

Doyel expressed enthusiasm for his new city and job.

“Indianapolis might just be my favorite city in America — no, really — and The Star is going to let me be the sports columnist? Pinch me!

“No, kindly don’t pinch me. But understand please that this position is a dream come true, and I’m going to give this job and this city the best I’ve got.”
