Bernfield Heads To The Score

Jordan Bernfield, who has been seen and heard on Chicago television and radio for the past six years, will now be heard frequently on WSCR-AM/670 The Score, beginning next week. He will serve as a Scoreboard sports update anchor, and could eventually do some weekend and fill-in hosting.

Deerfield native Bernfield began his professional sports media career locally in December 2008, when he joined WGN Radio as a sports anchor and host. Among the many duties he held at WGN-AM was being a sports update person on talk shows, hosting the Chicago Cubs post-game shows, hosting the “Blackhawks Weekly” show, and hosting “Preps Plus Chicago.” At the former WGWG-LP/The Game 87.7, Bernfield hosted his own weekend show and was the lead sports reporter for the station.

Bernfield has worked in numerous other places over the past few years, besides WGN Radio. In 2009, he began providing play-by-play broadcasting high school football, basketball and baseball games in Northwest Indiana for the Region Sports Network. For a couple of years, he fine-tuned his craft hosting sports shows for various Internet radio stations and podcasts. During the 2009-2010 UIC’s Men’s Basketball season, Bernfield was heard on WMVP-AM/ESPN 1000 as the team’s studio host for game broadcasts.

Besides radio, Bernfield is also a staple for local college sports on television. Since 2011, he has been the play-by-play announcer for Loyola University Chicago’s basketball games, which are seen locally on Comcast SportsNet Chicago. Since 2009, he has been a play-by-play announcer for University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) sports, including Men’s Basketball on CSN Chicago, and numerous other UIC sports for the Horizon League Network.

His work with WGN Radio was his primary job. Unfortunately for Bernfield, he was among the dozens blown out from WGN Radio on December 31st, when The Game 87.7 was canceled and the station began cutting corners to make up for the many financial losses of 2014. He had been seeking his next opportunity in radio ever since.

Last month, WSCR-AM’s Wayne Randazzo was named as the new pre-game/post-game host for the New York Mets. At WSCR-AM, Randazzo had served as an update anchor and weekend/fill-in host since 2011. With the exit of Randazzo, this created a vacancy at the top-rated Chicago sports station. Bernfield has been hired to fill that vacancy.

On Facebook this morning, Bernfield said: “As a kid who grew up in Chicago, I spent countless hours listening to Chicago’s #1 sports station. It still hasn’t really hit me that I’ll be on the air there next week, but I can’t wait to get started.”
