KTRS Adds Sports Play by Play

With the recent demise of KFNS (590 AM), which had been in the sports-talk business for most of the last two decades, a neighbor on the dial is picking up some of the slack.

KTRS (550 AM), which operates in the news-talk format with quite a bit of sports in the mix, on Saturday is set to begin broadcasting the home games of St. Louis FC, a new entry in the United Soccer League.

Beginning Monday, the station also plans to air at least 15 games played by the Memphis Redbirds — the Cardinals’ top minor-league team. And it’s set to carry the Triple Crown horse races this spring plus a preview show with Jay Randolph and Doug Nachman doing a handicapping seminar the Friday night before each event. KTRS also has added an outdoors show on Tuesday nights with former Cardinals pitcher Danny Cox.

“The station has stayed local and live and (has) made a commitment to bring more local and regional sports,” KTRS general manager Mark Dorsey said Thursday. “We’ve kind of picked up and taken over” for KFNS in that regard.

On the soccer front, KTRS gets things underway with St. Louis FC at 7:30 p.m. Saturday when the club entertains Pittsburgh. Bob Ramsey (play-by-play) and Bill McDermott (analysis) will call the team’s games, and the station has scheduled a 90-minute pregame program before each broadcast. John Hadley and Jim Heuer are the primary hosts of that show.
