Emrick Receives Vin Scully Broadcasting Award

Mike Emrick, the NBC Sports Emmy Award-winning hockey play-by-play broadcaster, became the eighth recipient of the Vin Scully Award for lifetime achievement in sports broadcasting from WFUV Radio in a ceremony Monday at the Costantino Room at Fordham University’s School of Law in Manhattan.

The award is named for Scully, the iconic voice for Major League Baseball’s Los Angeles Dodgers for more than 60 years and a Fordham University alumnus. WFUV, Fordham’s 50,000-watt station, was the launching pad to Scully’s Hall of Fame broadcasting career.

Emrick joined NBC and NBCSN on a full-time basis in 2011 after serving as the television voice of theNew Jersey Devils for the previous 18 seasons and 21 overall He is the lead play-by-play voice for NBC Sports Group’s NHL coverage. Now in his 40th year covering professional hockey, including the NHL the past 33 seasons, Emrick has called more than 3,000 hockey games in his broadcast career.

In his speech he paid tribute to the Devils, who won the Stanley Cup three times with Emrick calling play-by-play.

“I rode their coattails,” Emrick said.

Previous Scully Award recipients include: inaugural honoree Scully (2008); Dick Enberg (2009); Ernie Harwell (2010); Pat Summerall (2011); Al Michaels (2012); Bob Costas (2013); and Verne Lundquist (2014).
