The countdown clock has been ticking on Mike Francesa’s time at WFAN. But given the recent chain of events involving Craig Carton, and the uncertainty of the morning show, could the godfather of New York sports radio be convinced to extend his stay a little while longer?
Francesa told Newsday that he still plans to leave in December, but left the door open to reconsidering his position.
“I will not turn my back on the station,” Francesa said. “Let’s see what the fall brings. I haven’t talked to anybody, but I know there are conversations ahead.”
Had the Carton mess not occurred and Francesa reversed course, he would have come under heavy fire. But taking into account the vulnerability of the radio station should it have to overhaul it’s two biggest shows, finding a way to retain a proven performer like Francesa makes too much business sense for CBS Radio/Entercom, executives.
“I understand the question; it is fair,” Francesa added. “Right now there is nothing to report. The plan remains in place.”
Staying with WFAN for an additional year or two would benefit Mike too. His ratings remain strong, he hasn’t announced accepting any new opportunities, and is well compensated. Francesa has strong brand equity with the radio station, and extending the relationship a little longer would benefit both parties. If the existing arrangement isn’t satisfactory, they can always explore reducing the length of the show and increasing time off so the compensation and workload are more manageable.
For now, Francesa remains on track to depart. But as we know all to well in radio, a lot can change in 90 days.
