Jack Dorsey: CNN Likes to Create Conflict and Film It

0

A contentious and lengthy Twitter spat ensued Sunday when CNN’s Brian Stelter shared a Washington Post link accusing Fox News and Tucker Carlson of “selling doubt.”

Of all the people that you could imagine who would jump at the opportunity to criticize the Stelter tweet, an unlikely opponent emerged – former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey.

“And you all are selling hope?” Dorsey posted in response. To which Stelter responded by asking for a second opportunity to interview the former Big Tech executive.

“I’m just one person, but I enjoyed our CNN interview and would love to do it again – this topic deserves long form,” in response to an interview he conducted with him nearly four years ago.

One Twitter user reminded Stelter that his interview with Dorsey started by asking the question if his former company was broken?

Dorsey accused CNN of reporting fake news during the 2014 Ferguson, Missouri riots in a separate tweet.

“I know this from being on the streets of Ferguson during the protests and watching them try to create conflict and film it causing the protestors to chant ‘f—k CNN,’” Dorsey said.

KBLA Will Mark the 30th Anniversary of LA Riots with Live Broadcast

0

Nearly 30 years ago, Los Angeles erupted in violence as a jury acquitted four police officers in the beating of Rodney King.

To mark the event, talk radio station KBLA 1580 Talk will broadcast from the intersection of Florence and Normandie, infamously known as the corner where four men brutally assaulted trucker Reginald Denny.

The broadcast will air live on April 29 from 6 am to noon with hosts Tavis Smiley and Dominique DiPrima.

“Historic anniversaries, to my mind, are only worth pausing to commemorate if our reflections are instructive, informative, and empowering for how to make America a nation as good as its promise,” Smiley said in a statement.

The broadcast will feature some of King’s family members, community organizers, faith leaders, and elected officials.

“We want to take this opportunity to amplify the voices of the African American community in this moment of solemn reflection and continue the quest for accountability,” added DiPrima.

On Juneteenth last year, Smiley launched LA’s first and only “Unapologetically Progressive” talk radio station for the African American listening audience.

The Rodney King riots were carried out over several days and caused billions of dollars in damage.

Years later, a federal jury would ultimately find former officers Laurence Powell and Sergeant Stacey Koon guilty, and they were subsequently sentenced to 30 months in prison.

Timothy Wind and Theodore Briseno were acquitted of all charges, but the LAPD soon dismissed both for their role in the beating.

Richard Roth Receives Kidney from Fellow CNN Colleague

0

A cable news reporter is recovering after undergoing a kidney transplant which was donated to him by a colleague.

According to The Hill, CNN’s Richard Roth sent a letter to the network last year expressing his need for a kidney. Samira Jafari, deputy managing editor of CNN’s investigations unit, responded and volunteered.

“I was moved by it,” Jafari said during a joint appearance with Roth on CNN’s “New Day” on Monday.

Roth expressed his gratitude for Jafari’s good deed. “I’m just very blessed. I’m not very lucky at the racetrack, one of my loves, but so far with this medical lifeline that Samira has given me, it’s onward and upward,” Roth said during the interview.

Jafari had never met Roth before the surgery took place. “It just felt like as a human something I could do at that point in my life,” she said.

Jon Stewart’s AppleTV+ Show Not Resonating with Audience

0

Jon Stewart’s new talk show on AppleTV+ reportedly hasn’t resonated with audiences the way he would have hoped. Numbers indicate “The Problem with Jon Stewart” appeared in 180,000 homes during its debut in the fall.

The New York Post is reporting that the fifth episode, which aired in March, was seen by just 40,000 people, a 78% drop. Stewart reacted to the small viewership numbers at the end of the premiere episode of his show.

“Thank you for watching but my guess is you didn’t,” he said. “You’re probably just going to look at aggregated clips of it somewhere, on YouTube, where you pirate ‘Ted Lasso.’ You don’t even know how to get Apple TV, do you?”

Molly Thompson, head of unscripted and documentaries at Apple TV+, told Bloomberg that the company is happy with Stewart’s new program. “The series has sparked complex conversations about critical issues, and we’re proud to team with Jon for season two and beyond,” she said.

The former “Daily Show” host is used to being on television where audiences are significantly larger. His last show six years ago was seen by 3.5 million viewers, according to Nielsen ratings.

Stewart faces more competition on AppleTV+ with abundant streaming options such as Netflix, HBO Max, and Hulu which all have talk shows hosted by comedians.

The Confirmation of Ketanji Brown Jackson Leads News Coverage

0

Confirmed by a 53-47 vote by the U.S. Senate, with all Democratic senators plus three Republicans approving, Ketanji Brown Jackson was officially confirmed as a judge on to the U.S. Supreme Court during the week of Apr. 4.

At a ceremony on the South Lawn of the White House on Apr. 8, Jackson — the first Black female Supreme Court Justice — said it was “a moment in which all Americans can take great pride.” She added that “we have come a long way toward perfecting our union” and that in her “family, it took just one generation to go from segregation to the Supreme Court of the United States.”

Of the breaking news events during the week, Jackson’s ceremony was MSNBC’s most-watched in total viewers, drawing 863,000 sets of eyeballs from 12:33 p.m. thru 1:16 p.m. Eastern, according to Nielsen Media Research. Still, that trailed Fox News Channel’s live telecast, which delivered 1.2 million total viewers and 200,000 within the key 25-64 demographic. Nielsen did not carve out a label for the unique time slot for CNN in its listings; the news network’s “Inside Politics” from noon-1 p.m. Eastern drew 765,000 total viewers, and the 1-2 p.m. ET edition of “CNN Newsroom” drew 829,000 viewers — both of these hours averaged 196,000 adults 25-54 (perhaps indicating that for just the Jackson portions of those time frames, CNN may have eclipsed FNC within the demo). The aforementioned MSNBC attracted 88,000 adults 25-54.

As for MSNBC’s prior special news coverage from the week:

  • White House briefing on Ukraine: (Apr. 4 @ 3:07-3:38 p.m. ET) 0.785 million viewers; 95,000 adults 25-54
  • Pentagon briefing on Ukraine: (Apr. 4 @ 3:47-4:07 p.m. ET) 0.857 million viewers; 96,000 adults 25-54
  • Ukraine President Zelensky addresses United Nations: (Apr. 5 @ 10:41-11:10 a.m. ET) 0.753 million viewers; 78,000 adults 25-54
  • President Obama returns to White House; speaks on health care: (Apr. 5 @ 1:51-2:23 p.m. ET) 0.846 million viewers; 97,000 adults 25-54

Also, on Apr. 8, the Academy of Motion Pictures, Arts and Sciences officially banned Oscar winner Will Smith from attending the Academy Awards ceremony until 2033, as a result of his on-stage face slap of comedian Chris Rock on Mar. 27.

Similar to the increases seen by entertainment news programs on cable, some flagship shows in syndication like “Entertainment Tonight,” “Inside Edition,” “Access Hollywood,” “Extra” and “TMZ” saw significant growth from recent weeks during the week of Mar. 28-Apr. 1:

Dan Sileo Gets New Deal From Jakib Media Partners

0

Jakib Media Partners is renewing its commitment to Dan Sileo. The company signed the host to a new contract that runs through 2024. It also will give Sileo much more visibility across Jakib shows.

Sileo hosts The National Football Show. Beginning April 18, the show adds an extra hour, and will run every weekday from 3 until 6 pm Eastern.

“The response to the show has been amazing,” Dan Sileo said in a press release. “I love the interaction from our fans and am so thankful to all of our amazing guests.”

Jakib will also launch two new shows featuring Sileo. Every Saturday, the former Miami Hurricane will host The College Football Show. He will also team up with Barrett Brooks for a show called In the Trenches. It will be a one-hour show released bi-weekly during the football season.

“Dan Sileo knows football and knows the stars of the game” says Joe Krause, President of JAKIB Media Partners “In his expanded role, sports fans will find themselves wanting more and more from Dan Sileo.”

Chris Carlin Is Ready For The National Stage On ESPN Radio

0

Along his journey as a sports talk show host, Chris Carlin has carried a personal motto with him to each job that he’s had.

“I will thrive if you let me be an idiot,” said Carlin who will team up with former NFL defensive end Chris Canty for ESPN Radio’s new national afternoon drive show starting on April 25th.

Carlin is all pumped up and a big reason why is because his new partner should be able to embrace his personal motto.

“I think he can put up with my stupidity and that will be where he will earn his paycheck to be sure,” said Carlin.

All joking aside, Carlin is very much looking forward to this new opportunity on a national stage.  He’s been the local evening host on ESPN Radio’s New York affiliate since 2019 and before that, he was a host on WFAN Radio in New York, a host and anchor for Sports Net New York and also made a brief stop as a sports talk show host at WIP in Philadelphia.

It was at ESPN New York 98.7 where Carlin and Canty initially had the chance to work together a little bit.  Right from the get-go, Carlin could sense that it could eventually be a full-time partnership.

And he was right because in his mind, Canty “gets it” when it comes to great radio.

“He’s just incredibly smart and engaging and gets what sports talk radio is all about,” said Carlin.  “I’m just really impressed with him.  I kind of felt like the first few times that we did shows together solo that there was something there.  The folks up in Bristol agreed so I was really excited when they offered me the job and I’m thrilled to be working with him.  It’s an incredible opportunity.”

It’s one thing to host a daily sports-talk show in New York for a local audience, but it’s another thing to then entertain a national audience with a greater scope of topics.  The daily conversation won’t just be about how Yankees manager Aaron Boone is handling his lineup and bullpen, who the Jets are going to take with picks 4 and 10 in the NFL Draft and what direction the Knicks are going to take in the off-season.

As a network host, Carlin will have to appeal to everybody around the country and have his finger on the pulse of national storylines.

“You have to make it as engaging and smart and give people the angles on the big stories of the day that they haven’t necessarily thought of,” said Carlin, a two-time winner of the New Jersey Sportscaster of the Year Award.

“It’s definitely a different type of sports radio but it’s still something where it’s just a medium for me where you can really have fun, you can make people think and hopefully, you connect with them.”

And teamed with Canty, Carlin believes the listeners will enjoy the product.

“Chris and I are two guys that are extremely passionate but don’t take ourselves too seriously,” said Carlin.  “I think that hopefully is going to resonate with the fans.”

Something that definitely resonates with national sports fans is college football and Carlin will have no problem checking that box.  He has been part of the Rutgers Football broadcast team for twenty years has been the play-by-play voice of the Scarlet Knights for the last 17 seasons.  Carlin has called college football bowl games nationally for ESPN Radio and he was also a host on the Sirius XM college channel.

Carlin’s experience with college football will certainly be a benefit for him with the national show.

“I obviously know the Big Ten very well right now and follow everything nationally,” said Carlin.  “I’ve been a Heisman voter for several years so you always pay attention to everything going on.  It’s always been something that I’ve paid a lot of attention to.”

Aside from working, Carlin has been dialed into college football on Saturdays but he always spends plenty of time watching late-night games on television with his wife Sheryl.

“My wife is from the west coast and so we watch a lot of Pac 12 football and basketball,” said Carlin.  “I come home from a game and we’re getting locked in on Stanford vs USC.”

Carlin’s rise within the ESPN family came as a result of a difficult day in his career a few years ago.

Early in his career, Carlin joined WFAN Radio in New York as a producer and eventually went on to produce the iconic Mike and the Mad Dog show.  Carlin also anchored sports reports on Imus In The Morning and Boomer and Carton while also serving as a fill-in host on weekends.   After his time with SNY and WIP, Carlin returned to WFAN to co-host CMB with Maggie Gray and Bart Scott, but things didn’t go according to plan.

On a December day in 2019, Carlin was let go by WFAN.

A short time later, Carlin’s phone rang. It was Tim McCarthy and Ryan Hurley calling from ESPN New York.

“It was amazing,” recalled Carlin. “They called me on one of the worst days of my life.  You get fired from a job and a half-hour later, they’re on the phone saying ‘when can you start?’”

Less than three years later, after some fill-in stings and other network opportunities, Carlin is now set for a full-time national gig with ESPN.

“Those four letters are everything in the sports world,” said Carlin.  “For me, it was incredibly exciting to get chances to do stuff for the network and kind of build something there, and now to get this chance to be on the network every day is something that if you’re in this business you never know is ever going to be in the cards but boy it’s a pretty special feeling.”

And it will certainly be a special feeling for Chris Carlin, a self-proclaimed “idiot” to bring, by his own words, his “stupidity” to his new show with Chris Canty.

It’s something that has worked for him in the past with great success.

“The places that have let me do that…we’ve been able to do that and I’ve been very fortunate,” said Carlin.  “I’m excited. Chris has been great and Amanda Gifford and Justin Craig and everybody at ESPN has been absolutely amazing so I can’t wait to get going.”

He won’t have to wait much longer.  The new show debuts in just a week.

Jim Handly: Wendy Rieger Ruled the Room as She Always Did

0

Reaction and tributes poured in this weekend following the death of former NBC4 Washington news anchor Wendy Rieger who lost a courageous battle with brain cancer, she was 65.

Rieger anchored afternoon news in the Nation’s Capital for 25 years, before that serving as a reporter at WTOP Radio. Born and raised in Virginia, she earned her journalism degree from American University.

NBC4 anchor Jim Handly, who spent many years at the NBC4 news desk with Rieger,  told WTOP Radio that Rieger’s humor was still shining brightly, up until her final days.

“She ruled the room as she always did,” Handly said. “People just marveled at every word that came out of her mouth. Viewers felt that she wasn’t just a friend, she was a good friend and that they had known for 30-plus years.”

Doctors discovered Rieger’s brain tumor while she was receiving treatment at Johns Hopkins University for a heart condition. Last year, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser declared Dec. 17, 2021, Wendy Rieger Day in the District.

“I don’t think I know anybody who was more alive than Wendy Rieger,” said NBC4 anchor Doreen Gentzler. “She was very authentic, very spontaneous, very caring and generous. She was a great friend and I feel very grateful that I was able to be her friend.”

On Friday, NBC4 reported that Rieger was entering hospice care, the very next day the station announced that she had passed away. In 2021, she married retired NBC4 news photographer Dan Buckley.

Dan Bongino to Twitter: Elon Musk is Giving You a Massive Premium

0

Fox News “Unfiltered” host Dan Bongino criticized left-leaning pundits for their stance on Elon Musk’s $43 million bid to buy Twitter.

Bongino scolded critics during a segment on Saturday’s show, claiming that Musk has done everyone a favor by “putting hard cash on the table.”

“He’s offering to give you a massive premium on what you paid for the share prices,” said Bongino. “So, now you want to be woke — you’ve got a couple of choices here.”

Last week, following Musk’s proposal to buy Twitter, the company’s board adopted a limited-term shareholder rights plan called a “poison pill.” The move allows the company’s other shareholders other than Musk to acquire more shares at a relatively low price.

“There’s a price for being woke, folks,” said Bongino. “You want to be woke; you want to run Twitter your way? Well, you can run it into the ground because Elon Musk just put hard cash on the table. He’s offering to give you a massive premium on what you paid for the share prices.”

Musk still owns a little more than 9% of Twitter. The “Poison Pill” provision will kick in if Musk or any other investor acquires 15% of the company or more.

Lynn Sweet: Jen Psaki Forgot What Her Real Job Is

0

Journalist and CNN contributor Lynn Sweet criticized White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki, who appeared on Crooked Media’s “Pod Save America” to discuss a variety of issues including her working relationship with Fox News White House Correspondent Peter Doocy whom she has clashed with several times.

Appearing on Sunday’s “Reliable Sources” with Brian Stelter, Sweet accused Psaki of forgetting what her “real job is.”

“She was forgetting what her real job is, which is to communicate on behalf of the president. Okay? She even repeated some of the swear words that the questioner asked in the question, upping the ante.”

During the exchange, which you can hear right here, Psaki addressed her interactions Fox News’ Peter Doocy while responding to the question about whether Doocy was a “stupid son of a b***ch or if he just played one on TV.”

“He works for a network that provides people with questions that, nothing personal to any individual, including Peter Doocy, but might make anyone sound like a stupid son of a b****h” she said.

Sweet said it didn’t help that Psaki was making the comments to her former colleague Dan Pfieffer who worked as an advisor to President Barack Obama.

“This podcast is made by her friends. They go back to the Kerry campaign, they worked in the Obama White House,” Sweet said.
