Brian Long Named Program Director of KFI-AM 640, AM 570 LA Sports

0

iHeartMedia Los Angeles is set to name Brian Long as the new Program Director of KFI-AM 640, AM 570 LA Sports, and The Patriot KEIB AM 1150 Barrett Media has learned.

Long joins the cluster after most recently working as the Director of Programming Operations at Bonneville International in Phoenix with oversight of KTAR News 92.3, as well as serving as the Program Director of Arizona Sports 98.7 and ESPN 620.

The move marks a return to both iHeartMedia and Los Angeles for Long. He previously worked for the company in San Diego as the Program Director of San Diego Sports 760 and Newsradio 600 KOGO. Earlier in his career, he spent time working in the city at 710 ESPN Los Angeles. He also spent time with Bonneville in Seattle at 710 ESPN from 2010 until 2014.

“I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to lead these powerful iHeartMedia brands in Los Angeles and to work with some of the best talent in America,” said Long. “I truly could not be more excited to embrace this new challenge.”

“Programming KFI, KLAC and KEIB, requires a unique skill set, and Brian checks every box,” added iHeartMedia Los Angeles Senior Vice President of Programming John Peake. “His exceptional track record in ratings and revenue success, combined with professional play-by-play broadcasts, makes him the ideal leader to manage our partnerships with the world champion Dodgers and the Los Angeles Chargers.

Brian Long will replace Robin Bertolucci as the Program Director of KFI-AM 640 and The Patriot 1150 AM. Meanwhile, he steps into the role previously held by Don Martin at AM 570 LA Sports. Martin and Bertolucci departed iHeartMedia Los Angeles last year on their own volition ahead of nationwide cuts that affected KFI, AM 570, and FOX Sports Radio, which Martin oversaw for the company.

Bertolucci led the KFI brand for more than 20 years before her November departure. Martin, who held the title of iHeartMedia Executive Vice President of Sports, spent more than two decades leading the cluster’s efforts in Los Angeles. Programming duties after the duo’s exit were handled by iHeartMedia Executive Vice President of News, Talk, and Sports Chris Berry.

Long will begin his tenure with the iHeartMedia Los Angeles stations on Monday, January 27th.

NBC Sports Averages 37.8 Million Viewers for Rams-Eagles NFL Divisional Round Matchup

0

NBC Sports presented a divisional matchup that came down to the final minutes between the Los Angeles Rams and Philadelphia Eagles from Lincoln Financial Field on Sunday afternoon. The contest has delivered the fourth-largest NFL Divisional Playoff audience on record for NBC Sports, averaging 37.8 million viewers on NBC, Peacock, NBC Sports Digital platforms and NFL Digital platforms, according to live plus same day custom fast national data from Nielsen Media Research and digital metrics from Adobe Analytics. Peak viewership took place from 6 to 6:11 p.m. EST with an average of 47.5 million viewers.

The company aired a divisional matchup featuring the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Detroit Lions in the early Sunday window last season, which averaged 37.18 million viewers and an 18.6 household rating. In terms of overall viewership, the Rams-Eagles game is up 1.6% year-over-year and represents a gain after the media conglomerate registered a year-over-year loss last season. Commentary of the game was provided by play-by-play announcer Mike Tirico, analyst Cris Collinsworth and reporters Melissa Stark and Kaylee Hartung.

The only games that averaged a larger audience in the divisional round for NBC Sports was a matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and Houston Oilers in January 1994 featuring star quarterback Joe Montana (41.1 million viewers). Furthermore, the other two games with higher average viewership both included the Buccaneers and took place in the last three seasons (1/21/24, 40.4 million; 1/23/22, 39.9 million).

The game was the final NFL broadcast of the 2024 season for NBC Sports, which is now entering the third year of a 10-year media rights deal with the league reportedly worth $2 billion per season. At the moment, the game is also the most-viewed divisional round matchup registered, although data for CBS Sports’ presentation of the Baltimore Ravens and Buffalo Bills has yet to be released. NBC Sports will broadcast Super Bowl LX next February from Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif. to close out the 2025 season.

NBC Sports recently attained its best viewership for the Sunday Night Football franchise since 2015, averaging 21.6 million viewers throughout the regular season. The company also broadcast a Wild Card round game between the Commanders and Tampa Bay Buccaneers that averaged 29 million viewers. Official viewership data for the divisional round of the NFL Playoffs will be available on Wednesday.

Dan Le Batard: Christopher ‘Mad Dog’ Russo is ‘Bought and Paid For’

0

Following several instances of bringing up the new movie, “A Complete Unknown,” on radio and television platforms, Christopher “Mad Dog” Russo recently traveled to London, England to attend the premiere and met star Timothée Chalamet. This fortuitous circumstance came after Russo ranted about not being invited to the New York City premiere on ESPN First Take, and the situation elicited national headlines. While Russo was appearing on The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz, host Dan Le Batard opined that complaining about not being invited was a “shameless” and “embarrassing” way for him to procure an audience.

Russo subsequently explained that he had talked about not having a seat at the premiere on January 2, and that one of his agents received a call a few days later from Searchlight Pictures. Having been offered the chance to attend the premiere in either London, Paris or Rome, he chose to go to London to work around the schedule of football games. He flew overseas last week with his daughter to attend the premiere and voiced that Chalamet did a stellar job.

“You’re bought and paid for,” Le Batard said, a sentiment with which Russo concurred. “…And Bob Dylan would hate what you’re doing. He would hate what you’re doing, he hates what Chalamet’s doing, and you’re out here endorsing. You’re laundering Chalamet for Bob Dylan because they can buy you – it’s embarrassing.”

Le Batard subsequently played the video of Russo on First Take, prefacing the clip by expounding that Ruso was using his platform to “curry favor with the famous” in order to benefit his daughter. Moreover, he classified the gesture as something that did not resemble objectivity and asserted that it needed to be called out. Russo clarified by conveying that he did not expect that he would be invited, but he was grateful for the opportunity and enjoyed himself.

“Again, I don’t like what you’ve become late in your career here where you are simply trafficking in all of the powers that you have to do things that satiate your ego,” Le Batard said. Jon “Stugotz” Weiner added that he had been doing this throughout his entire career. In the last year, Russo signed contract extensions with SiriusXM and ESPN through which he is continuing his multiplatform ventures.

Le Batard referred to Russo as having a resurgence and exclaimed that it was wonderful to see, especially after talking about how “one of his agents” received a call about attending the London premiere. Russo elaborated by saying that they work together in his representation and that he did not realize Chalamet had been the person to call about the ticket request.

“The nicest guy in the world,” Russo said of Chalamet. “Oh, what a nice kid, and forget me. He signed every autograph with those fans who lined that red carpet, he took pictures, he grasped the idea. On the stage before the movie was presented, he did a great job talking about the LA fires. I can’t tell you – and then he’s doing Saturday Night Live this week as you guys know – so I can’t tell you how good he did. What a nice kid.”

The new program will air on Sundays at 8 PM ET. The 2016 Radio Hall of Fame inductee will share his insights on the current political climate.

WFAN to Broadcast Tuesday Edition of ‘Evan & Tiki’ Live from Barclays Center Ahead of Knicks-Nets

0

WFAN is bringing its afternoon drive program on the road this Tuesday, broadcasting a special edition of Evan & Tiki live from Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. Featuring co-hosts Evan Roberts and Tiki Barber, along with Shaun Morash and Tommy Lugauer, the program will be on site ahead of tip-off between the Brooklyn Nets and New York Knicks in an intercity rivalry matchup. The Nets will look to snap a three-game losing streak on their home floor, while the Knicks aim to further improve their position in the Eastern Conference playoff picture. Roberts expressed on Monday’s episode of the show that they had not been in Brooklyn in a very long time and that it would be a big night.

In August 2023, Audacy agreed to a multiyear extension with the Nets to broadcast its games over the air on WFAN. This year marks the 21st season the station is serving as the flagship home of games and features the commentary duo of Chris Carrino and Tim Capstraw. Following the conclusion of the Nets-Knicks game on WFAN, Keith McPherson will broadcast his nighttime program until 2 a.m. EST. Roberts and Barber will air their four-hour program from the new JetBlue at the Key club space on the suite level in the arena.

“Late in the show around 5:30 or so, Tiki Barber will pay off his, ‘He wasn’t good at NFL picks this year’ bet by selling T-shirts, or giving them away, of Tommy Lugauer’s very nasty tweet about Jalen Brunson upon the Knicks signing him, in which he called it a very typical Knicks move,” Roberts said. “So that tweet has been made a T-shirt, and we’ve got a few, limited edition, I think like 15 or 20, that you will be able to purchase/get from Tiki Barber right outside Barclays Center.”

Roberts posted an image of the T-shirt on his X account Tuesday morning and promoted the on-site broadcast of the show. Moreover, he added on the show that Barber or Lugauer may decide to autograph the shirt for fans. Nonetheless, the show is giving people an opportunity to interact with the show at Barclays Center as the two Atlantic Division teams square off for the third time this season.

This does not mark the first time Evan & Tiki has broadcast live ahead of a rivalry matchup in New York sports. In two days last August, the program was live from Citi Field in The Cadillac Club at Payson’s for the Subway Series between the New York Mets and the New York Yankees.

MLB Network to Present National Baseball Hall of Fame Election Announcement

0

The Baseball Writers Association of America (BBWAA) is set to officially reveal the Class of 2025 that will be inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, considered one of the highest honors in the game. Former Seattle Mariners outfielder and 10-time All-Star Ichiro Suzuki is projected to garner a spot among the pantheon of baseball. There are also several other players currently in the green with over half of the ballots known, some of whom include CC Sabathia, Billy Wagner and Carlos Beltrán. MLB Network is presenting eight hours of coverage on Tuesday leading up to the exclusive announcement of the results at 6 p.m. EST by Hall of Fame president Josh Rawitch live from Cooperstown.

The league-owned broadcast network has been the exclusive home of the Hall of Fame election announcement since 2009 and is disseminated across cable and direct-to-consumer platforms. Brian Kenny will be anchoring the show live from Cooperstown, N.Y. with contributions from Jon Morosi, Joel Sherman and Jayson Stark. Greg Amsinger will also anchor this coverage with insights from award-winning broadcasters Bob Costas and Harold Reynolds.

Kenny will commence the program with a special open, while Tom Verducci and Morosi penned essays on Suzuki and Wagner, respectively. MLB Network analyst Chris Young also interviewed Sabathia, his former teammate, in a conversation that will air during the special. The announcement program is going to be simulcast on MLB.com, MLB.TV and within the MLB App.

Following the conclusion of the show, MLB Tonight will continue coverage and analyze the results with host Robert Flores and analyst Dan O’Dowd. Furthermore, the Hot Stove team of Reynolds, Matt Vasgersian and Lauren Shehadi are covering the Hall of Fame election throughout the week. MLB Network will then close out the week with its tradition of welcoming the new Hall of Famers to its studio for a special edition of MLB Tonight on Friday, Jan. 24 at 6 p.m. EST. The broadcast entity will air the Hall of Fame Induction ceremony on Sunday, July 27 from Cooperstown.

This coverage takes place a few months after MLB Network canceled High Heat, the afternoon program that had featured Christopher “Mad Dog” Russo and Alanna Rizzo. Moreover, MLB Network reportedly offered buyout offers to more than 50 employees in November, according to John Ourand of Puck. An internal email obtained by Ourand divulged that MLB Network president Bill Morningstar acknowledged difficulties associated with linear television and declining revenue from cable and satellite bundles. Data from Nielsen Media Research cited in the report demonstrated that the network is distributed to 32 million homes.
