Tom Alvord Announces Departure from 97.5 The Fanatic

0

Tom Alvord has announced that he is no longer with 97.5 The Fanatic, ending his four-year run with the station. Alvord worked for the station and contributed to various shows across dayparts over the years. Through a post on the X platform early Wednesday, he revealed that he has not been with the Beasley Media Group-owned sports talk radio station as of last week.

“It has been an absolute pleasure living out my dream over the last 4 years,” Alvord said. “Thank you to everyone who made it possible including my awesome co-workers and of course you great listeners! Appreciate all of you!”

Alvord received positive comments on his post from colleagues and other media members, including Sean Barnard, David Malandra Jr. and Luke Arcaini. John Kincade, who co-hosts morning drive on the outlet, expressed that he hopes to see him soon and potentially back with the station in the future. Afternoon show producer Sylvana Kelleher wished Alvord the best of luck and thanked him for teaching her a lot of what she knows.

Alvord’s departure comes several months after other changes at the station took place surrounding its weekday programming lineup. Midday host Bob Cooney exited the station in late July ahead of the return of Mike Missanelli. Moreover, 97.5 The Fanatic and Beasley Media Group signed Ricky Bottalico to a multiyear extension through which he is continuing as a co-host of The Best Show Ever? in afternoon drive.

NBC News’ Kristen Welker Scores First Post-Election Network News Interview with Donald Trump

0

Donald Trump has been a vocal critic of the mainstream news in recent years. That won’t stop him from appearing on NBC News’ Meet the Press with Kristen Welker on Sunday.

Welker will interview Donald Trump on Friday and air the conversation during Meet the Press on Sunday. It will mark the first interview the President-elect has given a network news organization since he bested Democratic nominee Kamala Harris last month.

Kristen Welker previously interviewed Donald Trump in September of last year. It was the only time he sat down for an interview with a network news organization for the duration of the 2024 election cycle. That discussion featured 12 million views on YouTube.

There will be plenty of topics of conversation for Trump, who will become just the second American President to return to the White House for non-consecutive terms. The nominations he has made for his potential cabinet have, at times, been controversial in nature, with Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) removing himself for consideration as Attorney General. Meanwhile, Trump’s Defense Secretary nominee, former Fox News host Pete Hegseth, continues to see support dwindle after reports of his mistreatment of women and issues with alcohol have surfaced in recent days.

Highlights from the interview will be released before the conversation airs on Sunday. NBC News, NBC News NOW, and NBCNews.com will all have video clips from Trump featured prominently before the full interview airs on Sunday at 10:30 AM ET.

Telemundo Jumps on Chiefs Bandwagon with Two-Part Docuseries

0

Telemundo, NBCUniversal’s Spanish-language network, is looking to capitalize on the popularity of the NFL Champion Kansas City Chiefs with a two-part documentary called Viva Chiefs Kingdom.

The documentary is set to premiere December 8, just before sister network Universo airs the Chiefs’ primetime game against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Chiefs games have been drawing huge ratings this season, boosted by fans of singer Taylor Swift, whose relationship with Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce is being relentlessly chronicled. Even the Hallmark Channel has gotten into the act with a TV movie Holiday Touchdown: A Chiefs Love Story. Kelce’s mother Donna appears in the film, along with several of Kelce’s teammates and Kansas City head coach Andy Reid.

The docuseries follows 12 Chiefs fans in Mexico as they followed the team during the 2023 season. The network says the Chiefs’ Mexican fans have a deep bond with the team. It’s not always easy and even finding Chiefs merchandise can be a challenge south of the border.

The Chiefs were involved in producing Viva Chiefs Kingdom. The docuseries is the team’s first foray into long-form Spanish-language content.

The Chiefs-Chargers game on Universo will be narrated by sports anchor Miguel Gurwitz and analysis from former Arizona Cardinals offensive lineman Rolando Cantú and sideline reporting from Ariana Figuera.

The Chiefs-Chargers game will also air on NBC’s Sunday Night Football in prime time.

KTAR News 92.3 Reporter Jim Cross Announces Retirement

0

After a long, Hall of Fame career, KTAR News 92.3 reporter Jim Cross will step away from the Bonneville Phoenix news/talk station.

Cross has spent 25 years at the station as a news reporter, and earned election to the Arizona Broadcasters Hall of Fame for his work in the market in 2022. He also has won awards from the Associated Press during his long tenure.

“Now in the home stretch,” Cross said of his upcoming departure. “A million memories. It’s been an amazing ride that I wouldn’t trade for anything. We’ll see what the next chapter brings.”

“There comes a time in this business … where you just say ‘Ok. That’s enough,'” Cross said while speaking about his retirement with the station’s Mike Broomhead.

Broomhead shared there was “an audible gasp” from KTAR staffers when it was announced that Cross would be stepping away from the station. He asked the outgoing reporter if he’d had any second thoughts about his retirement.

“Not really,” admitted Cross. “It was very touching. I had a very hard time getting through (making the announcement) … Overall, no. It was time for a change. But I have no regrets at all. It was 25 great years. I got to some great things and worked with some awfully great people.”

While spending the last 25 years at KTAR News 92.3, Jim Cross has more than 40 years in the radio business originally working in Idaho and Washington. He worked at KAAA in Kingman, Arizona as well, joining the station three days before the Oklahoma City bombing. Timothy McVeigh had lived in the Arizona city before the bombing, with Cross’ reporting leading him to work at KTAR.

Don Garber: MLS has More Subs on Apple Than Expected

0

Major League Soccer (MLS) Commissioner Don Garber said that the league’s streaming deal with Apple TV has exceeded expectations.

“We have more subscribers than we and Apple thought we would have. We have more people watching our games, Garber told CNBC Sport.

Garber didn’t disclose specific numbers. “At some point there’ll be more transparency. Apple and other streaming services aren’t distributing subscriber numbers, but we’ll see how that looks in the future,” he said.

The MLS signed its deal with Apple in 2022. The deal called for Apple TV to stream every MLS and Leagues Cup match. Games had been on ESPN, Fox and Univision and some games continue to appear on Fox outlets and stream on Fubo, The MLS-Apple deal was reportedly worth $2.5 billion over 10 years.

It was reported earlier this year that the MLS had more than 2 million subscribers by the end of 2023.

The MLS liked the deal with Apple because it gave the league a more consistent video home Before Apple, “we had 60 different start times with our linear broadcasters. We get programmed the way the broadcasters wanted to put our games, as opposed to when our fans wanted to see our games,” he said. Now “every MLS game, we’ve got two start times, as opposed to 60. Every game is produced like it’s our version of Monday Night Football.”

Working with a giant like Apple has been a positive experience because while the tech company is is huge, it is also innovative, Garber said. “Our game will be broadcast – our MLS Cup in Times Square this weekend, probably not something that we would be able to do with a linear partner,” he said.  We have the ability to have technology and data and multi stream experiences, things we wouldn’t have been able to do with linear perhaps even with other streaming services. So when you can partner with a company like Apple, you have opportunity to solve issues and lean into a better future. That’s something we’re very excited about.”

Having a superstar like Lionel Messi has also helped the league, attracting fans, viewers and subscribers.

“Here we have the most popular player, one of most popular athletes in the world, arguably, in my opinion, the GOAT, the best soccer player ever to lace boots, and he’s had enormous impact. You could see that pink Inter Miami jersey everywhere around the world. It’s the number one selling jersey that adidas has, and I think there’ll be another Messi at some point, Garber said.

“We’ve constantly evolved from having big name players that could really make a difference and break through this very, very busy market, both domestically and globally. But I’m as excited about the young players that are in Major League Soccer and the kids that are coming through academies. And the fact that in our MLS Cup, we’ll have two great 22 and 23- and 24-year-old players that really, really are big stars in their country, played for their country’s national teams.”

Adrian Wojnarowski Reveals Prostate Cancer Diagnosis Prior to ESPN Exit

0

Before the start of the NBA season, longtime ESPN senior NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski divulged that he was retiring from the company and taking a new job with his alma mater. Wojnarowski became the general manager of the St. Bonaventure men’s basketball program, garnering responsibilities pertaining to the transfer portal, NIL and recruiting among other ventures. In a message regarding his retirement from ESPN, Wojnarowski cited that time is not in endless supply and that he wanted to spend his “in ways that are more personally meaningful.”

During a recent interview with Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated, Wojnarowski revealed that line referred to a diagnosis of prostate cancer he had received in March following a biopsy. His doctor recommended the test after his physical outlined an elevated prostate-specific antigen (PSA), and nothing showed up through an MRI. Wojnarowski discovered his cancer diagnosis just minutes before appearing remotely on NBA Countdown, but he was still able to complete the television hit.

The current treatment Wojnarowski is receiving is active surveillance, going to quarterly checkups and regularly monitoring his condition. He does not currently have any symptoms and told Mannix that the prostate cancer is “pretty limited in scope.” Doctors have instructed him to improve his eating habits, increase his exercise and receive better sleep. Although surgery remains a possibility, doctors have informed Wojnarowski that the only reason to have it would be to ease a potential mental burden of having the cancer inside of his body.

“When you hear cancer, you think about it going through your body like Pac-Man,” Wojnarowski said. “Prostate cancer, it generally stays confined to your prostate and is typically slow growing.”

Wojnarowski did not decide to leave ESPN because of his cancer, he explained, but he did gain perspective when traveling to Rogers, Ark. to attend a memorial for Chris Mortensen, who passed away earlier this year from throat cancer. Mortensen was one of the first people to welcome Wojnarowski to ESPN in 2017, and several ESPN employees made the trip to honor their longtime colleague. He was surprised, however, by the amount of people who did not travel to Arkansas to attend the memorial.

“It made me remember that the job isn’t everything,” Wojnarowski said. “In the end it’s just going to be your family and close friends. And it’s also, like, nobody gives a s—. Nobody remembers [breaking stories] in the end. It’s just vapor.”

When Wojnarowski called ESPN chairman Jimmy Pitaro to inform him of his decision, he was asked if he would be interested in staying on with the company in a different role. Pitaro suggested that he could return to NBA Countdown for the playoffs, but Wojnarowski felt that the audience deserved someone who was fully immersed in the league. As a result, he felt he did not have value anymore and decided to walk away.

“Jimmy was great,” Wojnarowski said. “But the only reason to stay was the money. That wasn’t a good enough reason.”
